Hasdrubal, then, in such circumstances, was revolving many and various thoughts concerning the impending events.
§10.37.2ἐλύπει μὲν γὰρ αὐτὸν ἡ περὶ τὸν Ἀνδοβάλην ἀπόστασις, ἐλύπει δὲ καὶ τὰ κατὰ τὴν ἀντιπαραγωγὴν καὶ τὴν ἀλλοτριότητα τὴν ὑπάρχουσαν αὐτῷ πρὸς τοὺς ἄλλους στρατηγούς· ἠγωνία δὲ καὶ τὴν Ποπλίου παρουσίαν.
For he was distressed by the defection of Andobales, and distressed also by the opposition and the estrangement that existed between himself and the other generals; and he was also anxious about the arrival of Publius.
§10.37.3καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν ἤδη προσδοκῶν αὐτὸν ἥξειν μετὰ τῶν δυνάμεων, θεωρῶν δʼ αὑτὸν μὲν ἐγκαταλειπόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰβήρων, τοῖς δὲ Ῥωμαίοις πάντας ὁμοθυμαδὸν προσχωροῦντας, ἐπί τινας λογισμοὺς κατήντησε τοιούτους.
And expecting him now to arrive shortly with his forces, and seeing himself abandoned by the Iberians, while all were with one accord going over to the Romans, he arrived at the following determination.
§10.37.4προέθετο γὰρ διότι δεῖ παρεσκευασμένον τὰ δυνατὰ συμβαλεῖν πρὸς μάχην τοῖς ὑπεναντίοις, κἂν μὲν ἡ τύχη δῷ τὸ νικᾶν, βουλεύσασθαι μετὰ ταῦτα περὶ τῶν ἑξῆς ἀσφαλῶς· §10.37.5ἂν δʼ ἀντιπίπτῃ τὰ κατὰ τὴν μάχην, ποιεῖσθαι τὴν ἀποχώρησιν μετὰ τῶν διασῳζομένων ἐξ αὐτῆς εἰς Γαλατίαν, κἀκεῖθεν παραλαβόντα τῶν βαρβάρων ὡς πλείστους βοηθεῖν εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν καὶ κοινωνεῖν Ἀννίβᾳ τἀδελφῷ τῶν αὐτῶν ἐλπίδων.
For he resolved that he must prepare as well as possible and engage the enemy in battle, and if fortune should grant him victory, he would thereafter deliberate safely about the future; but if the battle should go against him, he would make his retreat with those who survived it into Gaul, and having enlisted there as many of the barbarians as possible, march to Italy to assist, and share the same fortunes with, his brother Hannibal.
§10.37.6Ἀσδρούβας μὲν δὴ ταῦτα διανοηθεὶς πρὸς τούτοις ἦν· Πόπλιος δὲ προσδεξάμενος Γάιον τὸν Λαίλιον καὶ διακούσας τῶν παραγγελλομένων ὑπὸ τῆς συγκλήτου, προῇγε τὰς δυνάμεις ἀναλαβὼν ἐκ τῆς παραχειμασίας, ἀπαντώντων αὐτῷ κατὰ τὴν δίοδον τῶν Ἰβήρων, ἑτοίμως καὶ προθύμως συνεξορμώντων.
While Hasdrubal, having formed these plans, was occupied with them, Publius, having received Gaius Laelius and heard the instructions sent by the senate, led forth his forces, taking them from their winter quarters, while the Iberians met him along his route, readily and eagerly joining his expedition.
§10.37.7οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Ἀνδοβάλην πάλαι μὲν διεπέμποντο πρὸς τὸν Πόπλιον, τότε δὲ πλησιάσαντος αὐτοῦ τοῖς τόποις ἧκον ὡς αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς παρεμβολῆς ἅμα τοῖς φίλοις, καὶ συμμίξαντες ἀπελογίσαντο περὶ τῆς προγεγενημένης σφίσι φιλίας πρὸς Καρχηδονίους, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τὰς χρείας καὶ τὴν ὅλην πίστιν ἐνεφάνιζον, ἣν ἐτύγχανον ἐκείνοις παρεσχημένοι.
Andobales and his party had long been sending messages to Publius, and now, when he neared their country, they came to him from their camp along with their friends, and on meeting him, made their defense regarding their former friendship with the Carthaginians, and likewise set forth the services and the complete fidelity which they had happened to render to them.
§10.37.8μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τὰς ἀδικίας ἐξηγοῦντο καὶ τὰς ὕβρεις τὰς ἐξ ἐκείνων ἀπηντημένας.
After this, they detailed the acts of injustice and the insolent treatment which they had met with from them.
§10.37.9διόπερ ἠξίουν τὸν Πόπλιον αὐτὸν κριτὴν γίνεσθαι τῶν λεγομένων, κἂν μὲν φανῶσιν ἀδίκως ἐγκαλοῦντες Καρχηδονίοις, σαφῶς γινώσκειν αὐτὸν ὡς οὐδὲ τὴν πρὸς Ῥωμαίους δύνανται τηρεῖν πίστιν· §10.37.10ἐὰν δὲ πολλὰς ἀδικίας ἀναλογιζόμενοι κατʼ ἀνάγκην ἀφιστῶνται τῆς εὐνοίας τῆς ἐκείνων, καλὰς ἐλπίδας ἔχειν διότι νῦν ἑλόμενοι τὰ Ῥωμαίων βεβαίως τηρήσουσι τὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς εὔνοιαν.
Therefore, they requested Publius himself to be the judge of what they said, and if they should be found to be accusing the Carthaginians unjustly, he should know for certain that they would not be able to keep their faith with the Romans either; but if, on reflecting upon many acts of injustice, they had of necessity revolted from their goodwill towards them, he might have good hopes that, having now chosen the cause of the Romans, they would firmly preserve their goodwill towards them.
