I am not far from being grateful, council members, to my accuser, because he has brought about this trial for me.
For previously, having no pretext on which I might give an account of my life, now because of him I have obtained one.
And I shall attempt by my speech to show, on the one hand, that he is lying, and on the other, that I myself have lived up to this day worthy of praise rather than envy; for he seems to me to have prepared this danger for me for no other reason than because of envy.
§2καίτοι ὅστις τούτοις φθονεῖ οὓς οἱ ἄλλοι ἐλεοῦσι, τίνος ἂν ὑμῖν ὁ τοιοῦτος ἀποσχέσθαι δοκεῖ πονηρίας;
And yet, whoever envies those whom others pity, from what wickedness does it seem to you that such a person would abstain?
For if he slanders me for the sake of money —; but if he is punishing me as his enemy, he is lying; for because of his wickedness, I have never treated him either as a friend or as an enemy.
Therefore indeed, council members, he is clearly envious because, though experiencing such a misfortune, I am a better citizen than he is.
For I think it necessary, council members, to cure the misfortunes of the body by the practices of the soul.
εἰ γὰρ ἐξ ἴσου τῇ συμφορᾷ καὶ τὴν διάνοιαν ἕξω καὶ τὸν ἄλλον βίον διάξω, τί τούτου διοίσω;
For if I keep my mind and lead the rest of my life on equal terms with my misfortune, how shall I differ from this man?
Now concerning these matters let so much have been said by me; but concerning the things about which it is fitting for me to speak, I shall speak as briefly as possible.
For the accuser says that I do not justly receive the money from the city; for he says that I am able-bodied and not one of the disabled, and that I understand such a trade that I can live even without this allowance.
And he uses as proofs of my bodily strength that I mount horses, and of my prosperity in my trade that I am able to associate with men who are able to spend money.
Now, as for the prosperity from my trade and the rest of my life, such as it happens to be, I think you all know; nevertheless, I too shall speak briefly.
For to me, my father left nothing, and I stopped supporting my deceased mother this third year now, and I have no children yet who will care for me.
And I possess a trade capable of bringing in only little profit, which I myself already practice with difficulty, and I am not yet able to acquire someone to succeed to it.
And I have no other income except this; if you should take this away from me, I would risk falling into the most difficult fortune.
Do not, therefore, since it is possible, council members, to save me justly, destroy me unjustly; nor take away what you gave to me when I was younger and stronger, now that I am becoming older and weaker; nor, having previously seemed to be most merciful even toward those who suffer no misfortune, now because of this man treat harshly those who are pitiable even to their enemies; nor, by venturing to wrong me, make others who are in a similar condition to me lose heart.
For indeed it would be absurd, council members, if, when my misfortune was simple, I was then seen to receive this money, but now when both old age and illnesses and the evils that follow these are added to me, I should then be deprived of it.
And it seems to me that the accuser could show the magnitude of my poverty most clearly of all men.
For if I, having been appointed a choregos for tragedies, should challenge him to an exchange of property, he would choose ten times rather to be choregos than to make the exchange once.
καὶ πῶς οὐ δεινόν ἐστι νῦν μὲν κατηγορεῖν ὡς διὰ πολλὴν εὐπορίαν ἐξ ἴσου δύναμαι συνεῖναι τοῖς πλουσιωτάτοις, εἰ δὲ ὧν ἐγὼ λέγω τύχοι τι γενόμενον, τοιοῦτον εἶναι;
And how is it not terrible on the one hand now to accuse me on the ground that because of great prosperity I am able to associate on equal terms with the richest, but on the other hand, if any of the things I say should happen to occur, to show himself to be of such a mind?
καὶ τί πονηρότερον;
And what is more wicked?
