§9Μάρτυρες
ἡμέραις τοίνυν μετὰ ταῦτα οὐ πολλαῖς ὕστερον ἰδὼν ἀγόμενον τουτονὶ Παγκλέωνα ὑπὸ Νικομήδους, ὃς ἐμαρτύρησεν αὐτοῦ δεσπότης εἶναι, προσῆλθον βουλόμενος εἰδέναι ὁποῖόν τι περὶ αὐτοῦ πραχθήσοιτο.
Witnesses Not many days after this, seeing this Pancleon being led away by Nicomedes, who had testified that he was his master, I went up, wishing to know what would be done concerning him.
τότε μὲν οὖν ἐπειδὴ ἐπαύσαντο μαχόμενοι, εἶπόν τινες τῶν τούτων παρόντων ὅτι εἴη αὐτῷ ἀδελφὸς ὃς ἐξαιρήσοιτο αὐτὸν εἰς ἐλευθερίαν·
Then, when they had ceased fighting, some of those present with him said that he had a brother who would rescue him to freedom.
§10ἐπὶ τούτοις ἐγγυησάμενοι παρέξειν εἰς αὔριον ᾤχοντο ἀπιόντες.
On these terms, having given bail to produce him on the morrow, they departed.
τῇ δʼ ὑστεραίᾳ τῆς τε ἀντιγραφῆς ἕνεκα ταυτησὶ καὶ αὐτῆς τῆς δίκης ἔδοξέ μοι χρῆναι μάρτυρας λαβόντι παραγενέσθαι, ἵνʼ εἰδείην τόν τʼ ἐξαιρησόμενον αὐτὸν καὶ ὅ τι λέγων ἀφαιρήσοιτο.
On the following day, both on account of this special plea and the suit itself, it seemed to me that I ought to attend, taking witnesses along, so that I might know both the one who would rescue him and on what grounds he would take him away.
ἐφʼ οἷς μὲν οὖν ἐξηγγυήθη, οὔτε ἀδελφὸς οὔτε ἄλλος οὐδεὶς ἦλθε, γυνὴ δὲ φάσκουσα αὑτῆς αὐτὸν εἶναι δοῦλον, ἀμφισβητοῦσα τῷ Νικομήδει, §11καὶ οὐκ ἔφη ἐάσειν αὐτὸν ἄγειν.
But as to the terms on which he had been bailed out, neither a brother nor anyone else came, but a woman claiming that he was her slave, disputing with Nicomedes, and said she would not allow him to lead him away.
ὅσα μὲν οὖν αὐτόθι ἐρρήθη, πολὺς ἂν εἴη μοι λόγος διηγεῖσθαι· εἰς τοῦτο δὲ βιαιότητος ἦλθον οἵ τε παρόντες τούτῳ καὶ αὐτὸς οὗτος, ὥστε ἐθέλοντος μὲν τοῦ Νικομήδους ἐθελούσης δὲ τῆς γυναικὸς ἀφιέναι, εἴ τις ἢ εἰς ἐλευθερίαν τοῦτον ἀφαιροῖτο ἢ ἄγοι φάσκων ἑαυτοῦ δοῦλον εἶναι, τούτων οὐδὲν ποιήσαντες ἀφελόμενοι ᾤχοντο.
Now, all that was said there would be a long story for me to relate; but those present with him and this man himself came to such a pitch of violence that, although Nicomedes was willing and the woman was willing to let him go if anyone should either rescue him to freedom or lead him away claiming he was his own slave, they did none of these things, but snatched him away and departed.
ὡς οὖν τῇ τε προτεραίᾳ ἐπὶ τούτοις ἐξηγγυήθη καὶ τότε βίᾳ ᾤχοντο ἀφελόμενοι αὐτόν, μάρτυρας παρέξομαι ὑμῖν.
To prove, then, that on the previous day he had been bailed out on these terms, and that on this occasion they took him away by force, I shall present witnesses to you.
καί μοι ἐπίλαβε τὸ ὕδωρ.
And please, stop the water.
§12Μάρτυρες
ῥᾴδιον τοίνυν εἰδέναι ὅτι οὐδʼ αὐτὸς Παγκλέων νομίζει ἑαυτὸν μὴ ὅτι Πλαταιέα εἶναι, ἀλλʼ οὐδʼ ἐλεύθερον.
Witnesses It is easy, therefore, to know that not even Pancleon himself believes himself to be, I do not say a Plataean, but not even a free man.
ὅστις γὰρ ἐβουλήθη βίᾳ ἀφαιρεθεὶς ἐνόχους καταστῆσαι τοὺς ἑαυτοῦ ἐπιτηδείους τοῖς βιαίοις μᾶλλον ἢ κατὰ τοὺς νόμους εἰς τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἐξαιρεθεὶς δίκην λαβεῖν παρὰ τῶν ἀγόντων αὐτόν, οὐδενὶ χαλεπὸν γνῶναι ὅτι εὖ εἰδὼς ἑαυτὸν ὄντα δοῦλον ἔδεισεν ἐγγυητὰς καταστήσας περὶ τοῦ σώματος ἀγωνίσασθαι.
For whoever preferred, by being snatched away by force, to make his own associates liable to charges of violence, rather than, having been rescued to freedom in accordance with the laws, to get justice from those leading him away, it is not difficult for anyone to perceive that, knowing well that he was a slave, he feared to provide sureties and stand trial concerning his personal status.
§13ὅτι μὲν οὖν Πλαταιεὺς εἶναι πολλοῦ δεῖ, οἶμαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ τούτων σχεδόν τι γιγνώσκειν· ὅτι δὲ οὐδʼ αὐτὸς οὗτος, ὃς ἄριστα οἶδε τὰ αὑτοῦ, ἡγήσατο δόξαι ἂν ὑμῖν Πλαταιεὺς εἶναι, ἐξ ὧν ἔραξε ῥαδίως μαθήσεσθε.
That he is far indeed from being a Plataean, I think you understand well enough from these facts; but that not even he himself, who knows his own affairs best, thought he would seem to you to be a Plataean, you will easily learn from what he did.
ἐν τῇ ἀντωμοσία γὰρ τῆς δίκης ἣν αὐτῷ ἔλαχεν Ἀριστόδικος οὑτοσί, ἀμφισβητῶν §14μὴ πρὸς τὸν πολέμαρχον εἶναί οἱ τὰς δίκας διεμαρτυρήθη μὴ Πλαταιεὺς εἶναι.
For in the affidavit of the suit which Aristodicus here brought against him, disputing that his suits were not before the polemarch, a deposition was made that he was not a Plataean.
ἐπισκηψάμενος δὲ τῷ μάρτυρι οὐκ ἐπεξῆλθεν, ἀλλʼ εἴασε καταδικάσασθαι αὐτοῦ τὸν Ἀριστόδικον.
And though he prosecuted the witness, he did not follow it up, but allowed Aristodicus to obtain judgment against him.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ὑπερήμερος ἐγένετο, ἐξέτισε τὴν δίκην, καθʼ ὅτι ἔπειθε.
And when he became overdue, he paid the damages on such terms as he could persuade him.
καὶ τούτων, ὡς ἀληθῆ ἐστι, μάρτυρας ἐγὼ παρέξομαι ὑμῖν.
To prove that these things are true, I shall present witnesses to you.
καί μοι ἐπίλαβε τὸ ὕδωρ.
And please, stop the water.
§15Μάρτυρες
πρὶν τοίνυν ταῦτα ὁμολογηθῆναι αὐτῶ, δεδιὼς τὸν Ἀριστόδικον μεταστὰς ἐντεῦθεν Θήβησι μετῴκει.
Witnesses Now, before these things were agreed upon by him, fearing Aristodicus, he removed from here and lived as a resident alien in Thebes.
καίτοι οἶμαι εἰδέναι ὑμᾶς ὅτι εἴπερ ἦν Πλαταιεύς, πανταχοῦ μᾶλλον ἢ Θήβησιν εἰκὸς ἦν αὐτὸν μετοικῆσαι.
And yet, I think you know that if indeed he were a Plataean, it was likely for him to migrate anywhere rather than to Thebes.
ὡς οὖν ᾤκει ἐκεῖ πολὺν χρόνον, τούτων ὑμῖν μάρτυρας παρέξομαι.
To prove, then, that he lived there for a long time, I shall present witnesses to you.
καί μοι ἐπίλαβε τὸ ὕδωρ.

§16Μάρτυρες
ἐξαρκεῖν μοι νομίζω τὰ εἰρημένα, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί· ἐὰν γὰρ διαμνημονεύητε, οἶδʼ ὅτι τά τε δίκαια καὶ τἀληθῆ ψηφιεῖσθε, ἃ καὶ ἐγὼ ὑμῶν δέομαι.
Witnesses I think what has been said is sufficient, gentlemen of the jury; for if you remember it well, I know that you will vote for what is just and true, which is also what I request of you.
