§1περὶ μὲν τῶν κατηγορημένων, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἱκανῶς ὑμῖν ἀποδέδεικται· ἀκοῦσαι δὲ καὶ περὶ τῶν ἄλλων ὑμᾶς ἀξιῶ, ἵνʼ ἐπίστησθε περὶ οἵου τινὸς ὄντος ἐμοῦ ψηφιεῖσθε.
Regarding the accusations, gentlemen of the jury, enough has been demonstrated to you; but I ask you to hear also about the other matters, so that you may know what kind of person I am about whom you are going to vote.
ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐδοκιμάσθην μὲν ἐπὶ Θεοπόμπου ἄρχοντος, καταστὰς δὲ χορηγὸς τραγῳδοῖς ἀνήλωσα τριάκοντα μνᾶς καὶ τρίτῳ μηνὶ Θαργηλίοις νικήσας ἀνδρικῷ χορῷ δισχιλίας δραχμάς, ἐπὶ δὲ Γλαυκίππου ἄρχοντος εἰς πυρριχιστὰς Παναθηναίοις τοῖς μεγάλοις ὀκτακοσίας.
For I was approved in the archonship of Theopompus, and having been appointed choregos for the tragedies, I spent thirty minae, and three months later, having won with a chorus of men at the Thargelia, two thousand drachmae, and in the archonship of Glaucippus, eight hundred for the pyrrhic dancers at the Great Panathenaia.
§2ἔτι δʼ ἀνδράσι χορηγῶν εἰς Διονύσια ἐπὶ τοῦ αὐτοῦ ἄρχοντος ἐνίκησα, καὶ ἀνήλωσα σὺν τῇ τοῦ τρίποδος ἀναθέσει πεντακισχιλίας δραχμάς, καὶ ἐπὶ Διοκλέους Παναθηναίοις τοῖς μικροῖς κυκλίῳ χορῷ τριακοσίας.
Furthermore, acting as choregos for men at the Dionysia under the same archon, I won, and spent, along with the dedication of the tripod, five thousand drachmae, and in the archonship of Diocles, three hundred for a cyclic chorus at the Lesser Panathenaia.
τὸν δὲ μεταξὺ χρόνον ἐτριηράρχουν ἑπτὰ ἔπτὰ ἔτη, §3καὶ ἓξ τάλαντα ἀνήλωσα.
In the intervening time, I served as trierarch for seven seven years, and spent six talents.
καὶ τοσαύτας δαπάνας δαπανώμενος καὶ καθʼ ἡμέραν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν κινδυνεύων καὶ ἀποδημῶν, ὅμως εἰσφορὰς τὴν μὲν τριάκοντα μνᾶς τὴν δὲ τετρακισχιλίας δραχμὰς εἰσενήνοχα.
And though I incurred such great expenses, ran risks daily on your behalf, and lived abroad, nevertheless I contributed in property-taxes, thirty minae at one time and four thousand drachmae at another.
ἐπειδὴ δὲ κατέπλευσα ἐπὶ Ἀλεξίου ἄρχοντος, εὐθὺς ἐγυμνασιάρχουν εἰς Προμήθεια, καὶ ἐνίκων ἀναλώσας δώδεκα μνᾶς.
When I sailed home in the archonship of Alexias, I immediately served as gymnasiarch for the Prometheia, and won after spending twelve minae.
§4καὶ ὕστερον κατέστην χορηγὸς παιδικῷ χορῷ καὶ ἀνήλωσα πλέον ἢ πεντεκαίδεκα μνᾶς.
And later, I was appointed choregos for a boys' chorus and spent more than fifteen minae.
ἐπὶ δὲ Εὐκλείδου ἄρχοντος κωμῳδοῖς χορηγῶν Κηφισοδώρῳ ἐνίκων, καὶ ἀνήλωσα σὺν τῇ τῆς σκευῆς ἀναθέσει ἑκκαίδεκα μνᾶς, καὶ Παναθηναίοις τοῖς μικροῖς ἐχορήγουν πυρριχισταῖς ἀγενείοις, καὶ ἀνήλωσα ἑπτὰ μνᾶς.
In the archonship of Eucleides, acting as choregos for comic actors, I won with Cephisodorus, and spent, along with the dedication of the equipment, sixteen minae, and at the Lesser Panathenaia I served as choregos for the beardless pyrrhic dancers, and spent seven minae.
§5νενίκηκα δὲ τριήρει μὲν ἁμιλλώμενος ἐπὶ Σουνίῳ, ἀναλώσας πεντεκαίδεκα μνᾶς· χωρὶς δὲ ἀρχιθεωρίας καὶ Ἐρρηφορίας καὶ ἄλλα τοιαῦτα, εἰς ἃ ἐμοὶ δεδαπάνηται πλέον ἢ τριάκοντα μναῖ.
And I won a trireme race off Sunium, spending fifteen minae; apart from the duties of sacred envoy and the Errephoria and other such services, on which more than thirty minae have been expended by me.
καὶ τούτων ὧν κατέλεξα, εἰ ἐβουλόμην κατὰ τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ λῃτουργεῖν, οὐδʼ ἂν τὸ τέταρτον μέρος ἀνήλωσα.
And of these services which I have listed, had I wished to perform liturgies according to the letter of the law, I would not have spent even a fourth part of it.
τὸν δὲ χρόνον ὃν ἐτριηράρχουν, §6ἡ ναῦς ἄριστά μοι ἔπλει παντὸς τοῦ στρατοπέδου.
During the time I was serving as trierarch, my ship sailed best of the whole fleet for me.
τεκμήριον δὲ τούτου ὑμῖν μέγιστον ἐρῶ.
And of this I will tell you the greatest proof.
πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ Ἀλκιβιάδης, ὃν ἐγὼ περὶ πολλοῦ ἂν ἐποιησάμην μὴ συμπλεῖν μοι, οὔτε φίλος ὢν οὔτε συγγενὴς οὔτε φυλέτης ἔπλει ἐπὶ τῆς ἐμῆς νεώς.
For first, Alcibiades, whom I would have paid a great deal not to sail with me, sailed on my ship, though he was neither a friend, nor a relative, nor a member of my tribe.
§7καίτοι ὑμᾶς οἶμαι εἰδέναι ὅτι στρατηγὸς ὤν, ᾧ ἐξῆν ποιεῖν ὅ τι ἐβούλετο, οὐκ ἄν ποτε ἀνέβη ἐπʼ ἄλλην ναῦν εἰ μὴ τὴν ἄριστα πλέουσαν, μέλλων αὐτὸς κινδυνεύσειν.
Yet I think you know that being a general, who was allowed to do whatever he wished, he would never have boarded any other ship than the one that sailed best, since he was about to run risks himself.
ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἐκείνους μὲν ὑμεῖς ἐπαύσατε τῆς ἀρχῆς, §8τοὺς δὲ μετὰ Θρασύλλου δέκα ἕλεσθε, οὗτοι πάντες ἐβούλοντο ἐπὶ τῆς ἐμῆς νεὼς πλεῖν, ἀνέβη μέντοι πολλῶν λοιδοριῶν αὐτοῖς γενομένων Ἀρχέστρατος ὁ Φρεάρριος· ἀποθανόντος δὲ τούτου ἐν Μυτιλήνῃ Ἐρασινίδης μετʼ ἐμοῦ συνέπλει.
But when you removed them from office, and elected the ten with Thrasyllus, these all wished to sail on my ship; however, after many quarrels had arisen among them, Archestratus of Phrearrhii boarded it; and when he died in Mytilene, Erasinides sailed with me.
καίτοι οὕτω παρεσκευασμένην τριήρη πόσα οἴεσθε ἀνηλωκέναι χρήματα;
Yet, for a trireme so equipped, how much money do you think was spent?
§9ἢ πόσα τοὺς πολεμίους εἰργάσθαι κακά;
Or how much harm do you think was done to the enemy?
ἢ πόσα τὴν πόλιν εὖ πεποιηκέναι;
Or how many benefits done to the city?
τεκμήριον δὲ τούτου μέγιστον· ὅτε γὰρ ἐν τῇ τελευταίᾳ ναυμαχία αἱ νῆες διεφθάρησαν, οὐδενός μοι συμπλέοντος στρατηγοῦ (ἵνα καὶ τούτου μνησθῶ, ἐπειδὴ καὶ τοῖς τριηράρχοις ὠργίσθητε διὰ τὴν γενομένην συμφοράν) ἐγὼ τήν τε ἐμαυτοῦ ναῦν ἐκόμισα καὶ τὴν Ναυσιμάχου τοῦ Φαληρέως ἔσωσα.
And of this there is the greatest proof; for when the ships were destroyed in the last sea-fight, though no general was sailing with me (to mention this too, since you were angry with the trierarchs on account of the disaster that occurred), I both brought back my own ship and saved that of Nausimachus of Phalerum.
§10καὶ ταῦτα οὐκ ἀπὸ τύχης ἐγίγνετο, ἀλλʼ ἀπὸ παρασκευῆς τῆς ἐμῆς· εἶχον γὰρ χρήμασι πείσας κυβερνήτην Φαντίαν ἅπαντα τὸν χρόνον, ὃς ἐδόκει τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἄριστος εἶναι, παρεσκευασάμην δὲ καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα πρὸς ἐκεῖνον καὶ τὴν ἄλλην ὑπηρεσίαν ἀκόλουθον.
And these things did not happen by chance, but by my preparation; for by persuading him with money I had Phantias as helmsman all the time, who was thought to be the best of the Greeks, and I prepared the crew and the rest of the service to be in conformity with him.
καὶ ταῦθʼ ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγω, πάντες ἐπίστασθε, ὅσοι ἐτυγχάνετε ὄντες ἐκεῖ τῶν στρατιωτῶν.
And that I speak the truth in this, all of you know, as many of you as happened to be soldiers there.
κάλεσον δὲ καὶ Ναυσίμαχον.
