§55περὶ μὲν οὖν αὐτῆς τῆς γραφῆς, καὶ ᾧ τρόπῳ κηδεσταὶ ἡμῖν ἐγένοντο, καὶ ὅτι οὐκ ἐξήρκει τὰ ἐκείνου εἰς τὸν ἔκπλουν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὡς ἄλλοθεν προσεδανείσατο ἀκηκόατε καὶ μεμαρτύρηται ὑμῖν· περὶ δʼ ἐμαυτοῦ βραχέα βούλομαι ὑμῖν εἰπεῖν.
Regarding the charge itself, then, and the manner in which they became related to us, and how his own resources were not sufficient for the voyage but he even borrowed from elsewhere in addition, you have heard and it has been testified to you; but regarding myself, I wish to say a few words to you.
ἐγὼ γὰρ ἔτη γεγονὼς ἤδη τριάκοντα οὔτε τῷ πατρὶ οὐδὲν πώποτε ἀντεῖπον, οὔτε τῶν πολιτῶν οὐδείς μοι ἐνεκάλεσεν, ἐγγύς τε οἰκῶν τῆς ἀγορᾶς οὔτε πρὸς δικαστηρίῳ οὔτε πρὸς βουλευτηρίῳ ὤφθην οὐδεπώποτε, πρὶν ταύτην τὴν συμφορὰν γενέσθαι.
For though I am already thirty years old, I have never once spoken against my father, nor has any citizen ever made a charge against me, and though I live near the Agora, I have never once been seen either at a court or at the Council chamber before this misfortune occurred.
περὶ μὲν οὖν ἐμαυτοῦ τοσαῦτα λέγω, §56περὶ δὲ τοῦ πατρός, ἐπειδὴ ὥσπερ ἀδικοῦντος αἱ κατηγορίαι γεγένηνται, συγγνώμην ἔχετε, ἐὰν λέγω ἃ ἀνήλωσεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς φίλους· οὐ γὰρ φιλοτιμίας ἕνεκα ἀλλὰ τεκμήριον ποιούμενος ὅτι οὐ τοῦ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἀνδρὸς ἄνευ ἀνάγκης τε πολλὰ ἀναλίσκειν καὶ μετὰ κινδύνου τοῦ μεγίστου ἐπιθυμῆσαι ἔχειν τι τῶν κοινῶν.
Regarding myself, then, I say this much, but regarding my father, since the accusations have been made as if against a wrongdoer, please excuse me if I mention what he spent on the city and on his friends; for I do this not for the sake of ambition, but to make it a proof that it is not in the character of the same man both to spend much without necessity and to desire, at the greatest risk, to possess some of the public property.
§57εἰσὶ δέ τινες οἱ προαναλίσκοντες οὐ μόνου τούτου ἕνεκα ἀλλʼ ἵνα ἄρχειν ὑφʼ ὑμῶν ἀξιωθέντες διπλάσια κομίσωνται.
Indeed, there are some who spend in advance not for this reason alone, but so that, having been deemed worthy of office by you, they may recover twice as much.
ὁ τοίνυν ἐμὸς πατὴρ ἄρχειν μὲν οὐδεπώποτε ἐπεθύμησε, τὰς δὲ χορηγίας ἁπάσας κεχορήγηκε, τετριηράρχηκε δὲ ἑπτάκις, εἰσφορὰς δὲ πολλὰς καὶ μεγάλας εἰσενήνοχεν.
My father, however, never once desired to hold office, but he performed all the choruses, served as trierarch seven times, and contributed many large property taxes.
ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε καὶ ὑμεῖς, καθʼ ἑκάστην ἀναγνώσεται.
In order that you too may know them, they will be read one by one.
§58Λειτουργίαι
ἀκούετε, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, τὸ πλῆθος.
Liturgies You hear, gentlemen of the jury, the number.
πεντήκοντα γὰρ ἔτη ἐστὶν ὅσα ὁ πατὴρ καὶ τοῖς χρήμασι καὶ τῷ σώματι τῇ πόλει ἐλῃτούργει.
For my father performed liturgies for the city with both his money and his person for fifty years.
ἐν οὖν τοσούτῳ χρόνῳ δοκοῦντά τι ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἔχειν οὐδεμίαν εἰκὸς δαπάνην πεφευγέναι.
In so long a time, therefore, it is natural that one who was thought to have something from office should have escaped no expense.
ὅμως δὲ καὶ μάρτυρας ὑμῖν παρέξομαι.
Nevertheless, I shall also provide witnesses for you.
§59Μάρτυρες
τούτων συμπάντων κεφάλαιόν ἐστιν ἐννέα τάλαντα καὶ δισχίλιαι δραχμαί.
Witnesses The sum total of all these is nine talents and two thousand drachmae.
ἔτι τοίνυν καὶ ἰδία τισὶ τῶν πολιτῶν ἀποροῦσι συνεξέδωκε θυγατέρας καὶ ἀδελφάς, τοὺς δʼ ἐλύσατο ἐκ τῶν πολεμίων, τοῖς δʼ εἰς ταφὴν παρεῖχεν ἀργύριον.
Furthermore, in private life, he helped portion out the daughters and sisters of some needy citizens, ransomed others from enemies, and provided money for the burial of others.
καὶ ταῦτʼ ἐποίει ἡγούμενος εἶναι ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ ὠφελεῖν τοὺς φίλους, καὶ εἰ μηδεὶς μέλλοι εἴσεσθαι· νῦν δὲ πρέπον ἐστὶ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀκοῦσαί μου.
And he did these things believing that it is the part of a good man to help his friends, even if no one is to know of it; but now it is fitting that you too should hear this from me.
καί μοι κάλει τὸν καὶ τόν.

§60Μάρτυρες
τῶν μὲν οὖν μαρτύρων ἀκηκόατε· ἐνθυμεῖσθε δὲ ὅτι ὀλίγον μὲν χρόνον δύναιτʼ ἄν τις πλάσασθαι τὸν τρόπον τὸν αὑτοῦ, ἐν ἑβδομήκοντα δὲ ἔτεσιν οὐδʼ ἂν εἶς λάθοι πονηρὸς ὤν.
Witnesses You have heard the witnesses, then; and consider that while a person might shape his character for a short time, in seventy years not a single person could escape notice if he were wicked.
τῷ τοίνυν πατρὶ τῷ ἐμῷ ἄλλα μὲν ἄν τις ἔχοι ἐπικαλέσαι ἐτόλμησε πώποτε.
Indeed, while someone might have other things to charge my father with, no one ever dared to accuse him of injustice.
§61οὔκουν ἄξιον τοῖς τῶν κατηγόρων λόγοις πιστεῦσαι μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς ἔργοις, ἃ ἐπράχθη ἐν ἅπαντι τῷ βίῳ, καὶ τῷ χρόνῳ, ὃν ὑμεῖς σαφέστατον ἔλεγχον τοῦ ἀληθοῦς νομίσατε.
Therefore, it is not right to believe the words of the accusers rather than the deeds performed throughout his whole life, and time, which you must consider the clearest proof of truth.
εἰ γὰρ μὴ ἦν τοιοῦτος, οὐκ ἂν ἐκ πολλῶν ὀλίγα κατέλιπεν, ἐπεὶ εἰ νῦν γε ἐξαπατηθείητε ὑπὸ τούτων καὶ δημεύσαιθʼ ἡμῶν τὴν οὐσίαν, οὐδὲ δύο τάλαντα λάβοιτʼ ἄν.
For if he were not such a man, he would not have left a few things out of many; since if you were now deceived by these men and confiscated our property, you would not get even two talents.
ὥστε οὐ μόνον πρὸς δόξαν ἀλλὰ καὶ εἰς χρημάτων λόγον λυσιτελεῖ μᾶλλον ὑμῖν ἀποψηφίσασθαι· πολὺ γὰρ πλείω ὠφεληθήσεσθʼ,
So it is more advantageous for you to vote for acquittal, not only for your reputation but also in terms of money; for you will be benefited far more if we keep it.
§62ἐὰν ἡμεῖς ἔχωμεν. σκοπεῖτε δὲ ἐκ τοῦ παρεληλυθότος χρόνου, ὅσα φαίνεται ἀνηλωμένα εἰς τὴν πόλιν· καὶ νῦν ἀπὸ τῶν ὑπολοίπων τριηραρχῶ μὲν ἐγώ, τριηραρχῶν δὲ ὁ πατὴρ ἀπέθανεν, πειράσομαι δʼ, ὥσπερ καὶ ἐκεῖνον ἑώρων, ὀλίγα κατὰ μικρὸν παρασκευάσασθαι εἰς τὰς κοινὰς ὠφελείας· ὥστε τῷ γʼ ἔργῳ πάλαι τῆς πόλεως ταῦτʼ ἐστι, καὶ οὔτʼ ἐγὼ ἀφῃρημένος ἀδικεῖσθαι οἰήσομαι, ὑμῖν τε πλείους οὕτως αἱ ὠφέλειαι ἢ εἰ δημεύσαιτε.
Consider, from the past, how much appears to have been spent on the city; and now, from what remains, I am serving as trierarch, and my father died while serving as trierarch, and I shall try, just as I saw him doing, to prepare little by little for the public benefit; so that in deed, these things have long belonged to the city, and I shall not think myself wronged by being deprived of them, and the benefits to you will be greater in this way than if you should confiscate them.
§63πρὸς δὲ τούτοις ἄξιον ἐνθυμηθῆναι οἵαν φύσιν εἶχεν ὁ πατήρ.
In addition to these things, it is worth considering what kind of nature my father had.
ὅσα γὰρ ἔξω τῶν ἀναγκαίων ἐπεθύμησεν ἀναλίσκειν, πάντα φανήσεται τοιαῦτα ὅθεν καὶ τῇ πόλει τιμὴ ἔμελλεν ἔσεσθαι.
For whatever he desired to spend beyond what was necessary will all be shown to be of such a kind as was bound to bring honor also to the city.
αὐτίκα ὅτε ἵππευεν, οὐ μόνον ἵππους ἐκτήσατο λαμπροὺς ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀθληταῖς ἐνίκησεν Ἰσθμοῖ καὶ Νεμέᾳ, ὥστε τὴν πόλιν κηρυχθῆναι καὶ αὐτὸν στεφανωθῆναι.
For instance, when he served in the cavalry, he not only acquired splendid horses but also won victories at the Isthmus and at Nemea, so that the city was proclaimed and he himself was crowned.
δέομαι οὖν ὑμῶν, §64ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, καὶ τούτων καὶ τῶν ἄλλων μεμνημένους ἁπάντων τῶν εἰρημένων βοηθεῖν ἡμῖν καὶ μὴ περιιδεῖν ὑπὸ τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἀναιρεθέντας.
I beg of you, therefore, gentlemen of the jury, remembering both these things and all the other things that have been said, to help us and not to allow us to be destroyed by our enemies.
καὶ ταῦτα ποιοῦντες τά τε δίκαια ψηφιεῖσθε καὶ ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς τὰ συμφέροντα.
And doing this, you will vote for what is just and advantageous to yourselves.
