1. §4.1τῷ μεδεῦντι Νείλεω δήμου — The participle μεδεῦντι (Ionic for μεδόντι, 'ruler', which governs the genitive) takes the genitive Νείλεω δήμου ('the people of the Nile') as its object. Νείλεω is the Ionic genitive of Νεῖλος.
2. §4.1τοῦτο δὶς λαβὼν ἀριστεῖον — The nominative masculine singular aorist participle λαβὼν ('having received') agrees with the subject Thales and expresses an action temporally prior to the main verb δίδωσι. τοῦτο and ἀριστεῖον are the direct objects of the participle, standing in apposition.
