Septuagint · Susanna (Theodotion's version) §1.34-1.64

Daniel's Exposure of the Elders and Rescue of Susanna

Passage 2 of 2 · Greek

Summary

The two elders accuse Susanna of infidelity before the people, and the assembly sentences her to death. However, the youth Daniel, inspired by God, intervenes and exposes their false witness through separate examinations, proving Susanna's innocence and saving her life.

§1.34ἀναστάντες δὲ οἱ δύο πρεσβῦται ἐν μέσῳ τῷ λαῷ ἔθηκαν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλῆν αὐτῆς·
Then the two elders stood up in the midst of the people and laid their hands upon her head.
§1.3535 ἡ δὲ κλαίουσα ἀνέβλεψεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν, ὅτι ἦν ἡ καρδία αὐτῆς πεποιθυῖα ἐπὶ Κυρίῳ.
35 And she, weeping, looked up toward heaven, for her heart trusted in the Lord.
§1.36εἶπαν δὲ οἱ πρεσβῦται Περιπατούντων ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ μόνων εἰσῆλθεν αὕτη μετὰ δύο παιδισκῶν, καὶ ἀπέκλεισεν τὰς θύρας τοῦ παραδείσου καὶ ἀπέλυσεν τὰς παιδίσκας.
And the elders said, "As we were walking in the garden alone, this woman came in with two maids, and shut the garden doors, and sent the maids away.
§1.37καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὴν νεανίσκος, ὃς ἦν κεκρυμμένος, καὶ ἀνέπεσε μετʼ αὐτῆς.
Then a young man, who was hidden there, came to her and lay with her.
§1.38ἡμεῖς δὲ ὄντες ἐν τῇ γωνίᾳ τοῦ παραδείσου ἰδόντες τὴν ἀνομίαν ἐδράμομεν ἐπʼ αὐτούς·
We, being in a corner of the garden, saw this wickedness and ran toward them.
§1.39καὶ ἰδόντες συγγινομένους αὐτούς, ἐκείνου μέν οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐγκρατεῖς γενέσθαι διὰ τὸ ἰσχύειν αὐτὸν ὑπέρ ἡμᾶς καὶ ἀνοίξαντα τὰς θύρας ἐκπεπηδηκέναι,
And though we saw them together, we could not hold him because he was stronger than we, and he opened the doors and leaped out.
§1.40ταύτης δὲ ἐπιλαβόμενοι ἐπηρωτῶμεν τίς ἦν ὁ νεανίσκος· §1.41καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἀναγγεῖλαι ἡμῖν.
But having seized this woman, we asked who the young man was, yet she would not tell us.
ταῦτα μαρτυροῦμεν. καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτοῖς ἡ συναγωγὴ ὡς πρεσβυτέροις τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ κριταῖς, καὶ κατέκριναν αὐτὴν ἀποθανεῖν.
These things we testify." And the assembly believed them as elders of the people and judges, and they condemned her to death.
Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, "O eternal God, who knowest secrets, and knowest all things before they come to pass, thou knowest that they have borne false witness against me; and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things which these men have maliciously invented against me." And the Lord heard her voice.
§1.45καὶ ἀπαγομένης αὐτῆς ἀπολέσθαι, ἐξήγειρεν ὁ θεὸς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον παιδαρίου νεωτέρου ᾧ ὄνομα Δανιὴλ. §1.46καὶ ἐβόησεν φωνῇ μεγάλῃ Ἀθῷος ἐγὼ ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος ταύτης. §1.47ἐπέστρεψεν δὲ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπαν Τίς ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὃν σὺ λελάληκας; §1.48ὁ δὲ στὰς ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Οὕτως μωροί, οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ;
Therefore, when she was led to be put to death, God raised up the holy spirit of a young youth, whose name was Daniel, and he cried out with a loud voice, "I am innocent of the blood of this woman." Then all the people turned toward him and said, "What is this word that thou hast spoken?" And he, standing in the midst of them, said, "Are ye such fools, ye sons of Israel?
οὐκ ἀνακρίναντες οὐδὲ τὸ σαφές ἐπιγνόντες κατεκρίνατε θυγατέρα Ἰσραήλ;
Without examination or knowledge of the truth, have ye condemned a daughter of Israel?
§1.49ἀναστρέψατε εἰς τὸ κριτήριον· ψευδῆ γὰρ οὖτοι κατεμαρτύρησαν αὐτῆς. §1.50καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν πᾶς ὁ λαὸς μετὰ σπουδῆς.
Return again to the place of judgment, for these men have borne false witness against her." Wherefore all the people returned in haste.
And the elders said to him, "Come, sit down in our midst and show it to us, § since God hath given thee the honor of an elder." Then said Daniel unto them, "Separate them far from one another, and I will examine them." So when they were put asunder one from another, he called one of them and said unto him, "O thou that art waxed old in wickedness, now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light, in that thou hast pronounced unjust judgments, condemning the innocent and letting the guilty go free, whereas the Lord saith, 'The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay.' Now then, if thou hast indeed seen her, tell me: Under what tree didst thou see them conversing with each other?" And he answered, "Under a mastic tree." And Daniel said, "Very well!
Thou hast lied against thine own head; for even now the angel of God, having received the sentence from God, shall cut thee in two." So he put him aside, and commanded to bring the other, and said unto him, "O thou seed of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty hath deceived thee, and lust hath perverted thy heart.
§1.57οὕτως ἐποιεῖτε θυγατράσιν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐκεῖναι φοβούμεναι ὡμίλουν ὑμῖν· ἀλλʼ οὐ θυγάτηρ Ἰούδα ὑπέμεινεν τὴν ἀνομίαν ὑμῶν.
Thus have ye dealt with the daughters of Israel, and they for fear conversed with you; but the daughter of Judah would not abide your wickedness.
§1.58νῦν οὗν λέγε μοι ῾ Υπὸ τί δένδρον κατέλαβες αὐτοὺς ὁμιλοῦντας ἀλλήλοις; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ῾ Υπὸ πρῖνον.
Now therefore tell me: Under what tree didst thou take them conversing with each other?" And he answered, "Under an holm oak." Then said Daniel unto him, "Very well!
Thou also hast lied against thine own head; for the angel of God waiteth with the sword to saw thee in two, that he may destroy you." With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice, and praised God, who saveth them that trust in him.
And they rose up against the two elders, because Daniel had convicted them of false witness by their own mouth, and they did to them as they had maliciously intended to do to their neighbor, acting according to the law of Moses, and they put them to death.
καὶ ἐσώθη αἶμα ἀναίτιον ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ.
Thus the innocent blood was saved that day.
§1.63Xελκίας δὲ καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ ἤνεσαν περὶ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῶν μετὰ Ἰωακεὶμ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς καὶ τῶν συνγενῶν πάντων, ὅτι οὐχ εἰρέθη ἐν αὐτῇ ἄσχημον πρᾶγμα.
Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, with Joakim her husband and all her kindred, because there was no dishonesty found in her.
§1.64Καὶ Δανιὴλ ἐγένετο μέγας ἐνώπιον τοῦ λαοῦ ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης καὶ ἐπέκεινα. ¶
And Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day forward. ¶

Notes

  1. §1.39ἐκείνου μέν οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐγκρατεῖς γενέσθαι — The phrase `ἐγκρατής γίνομαι` (derived from the adjective `ἐγκρατής`, meaning "in control of" or "holding power over") takes the genitive case. Here, `ἐκείνου` (that man) is the genitive object of the phrase, meaning "we could not secure/hold him."
  2. §1.43μηδέν ὅν οὗτοι ἐπονηρεύσαντο κατʼ ἐμοῦ — The relative pronoun `ὅν` is expected to be `ὅ` (matching the neuter singular antecedent `μηδέν`) or `ὧν` (by attraction to the implied plural genitive "of the things which they maliciously plotted"). However, due to manuscript corruption, it appears as the masculine singular accusative `ὅν`. It is to be construed as "having done nothing [of the things] which they maliciously plotted against me."
  3. §1.50τὸ πρεσβεῖον — Literally meaning the "privilege of seniority" or "office of an elder," `τὸ πρεσβεῖον` here refers to the "authority of wisdom" or "prerogative of judgment" that God has bestowed upon the youth Daniel, enabling him to sit in the midst of the elders and lead the examination.
  4. §1.55ὑπὸ σχῖνον ... σχίσει — This is a wordplay (paronomasia) unique to the Greek version, exploiting the phonetic similarity between the tree named by the elder, `σχῖνος` (mastic tree), and the verb of punishment pronounced by Daniel, `σχίσει` (future of `σχίζω`, "will split [in two]"). A parallel pun occurs in §1.58-1.59 between `πρῖνος` (holm oak) and `πρίσαι` (inf. of `πρίζω`, "to saw [in two]").
