How has the city sat solitary, she that was full of people!
ἐγενήθη ὡς χήρα πεπληθυμμένη ἐν ἔθνεσιν,
ἄρχουσα ἐν χώραις ἐγενήθη εἰς φόρον.
She is become as a widow; she that was great among the nations, she that was a princess among the provinces is become tributary.

Κλαίουσα ἔκλαυσεν ἐν νυκτί, καὶ τὰ δάκρυα αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τῶν
σιαγόνων αὐτῆς,
καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχει ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτὴν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν
ἀγαπώντων αὐτὴν· πάντες οἱ φιλοῦντες αὐτὴν ἠθέτησαν ἐν αὐτῇ,
ἐγένοντο αὐτή εἰς ἐχθρούς.
She weeps sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; and among all her lovers there is none to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies.

Μετῳκίσθη Ἰουδαία ἀπὸ ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς καὶ ἀπὸ πλήθους
δουλείας αὐτῆς·
Gimel.
ἐκάθισεν ἐν ἔθνεσιν, οὐχ εἶρεν ἀνάπαυσιν· πάντες οἱ καταδιώκοντες αὐτὴν κατέλαβον αὐτὴν ἀνὰ μέσον
τῶν θλιβόντων.
Judah is gone into captivity because of her affliction, and because of the greatness of her servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest; all her pursuers overtook her between the straits.
§1.4Δάλεθ.
Daleth.
Ὁδοὶ Σειὼν πενθοῦσιν παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἰναι ἐρχομένους ἐν ἑορτῇ· πᾶσαι αἱ πύλαι αὐτῆς ἠφανισμέναι, οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῆς
ἀναστενάζουσιν,
αἱ παρθένοι αὐτῆς ἀγόμεναι, καὶ αὐτὴ πικραινομένη ἐν ἑαυτῇ.
The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts; all her gates are desolate: her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

Ἐγένοντο οἱ θλίκδοντες αὐτὴν εἰς κεφαλήν.
He.
καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῆς
εὐθηνοῦσαν,
ὅτι Κύριος ἐταπείνωσεν ἐπὶ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἀσεβειῶν αὐτῆς· τὰ νήπια αὐτῆς ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αίχμαλαωσίᾳ κατὰ πρόκωποι
θλίβοντος.
Her adversaries are become the head, her enemies prosper; for the Lord has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions; her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.

Καὶ ἐξήρθη ἐκ θυγατρὸς Σειὼν πᾶσα ἡ εὐπρέπεια αὐτῆς·
Waw.
ἐγένοντο οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῆς ὡς κριοὶ οὐχ είρίσκοντες νομὴν. καὶ ἐπορεύοντο ἐν οὐκ ἰσχύι κατὰ πρόσωπον διώκοντος.
And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed; her princes are become like rams that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.

Ἐμνήσθη Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἡμερῶν ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς καὶ ἀπωσμῶι
αὐτῆς,
πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμητὰ αὐτῆς ὅσα ἤν ἐξ ἡμερῶν ἀρχαίων. ἐν τῷ πεσεῖν τὸν λαὸν αὐτῆς εἰς χεῖρας θλίβοντος, καὶ οὐκ ἦι
ὁ βοηθῶν αὐτῇ· ἰδόντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῆς ἐγέλασαν ἐπὶ κατοικεσίᾳ αὐτῆς.
Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her; the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her desolations.

ʼΑμαρτίαν ἥμαρτεν Ἰερουσαλήμ, διὰ τοῦτο εἰς σάλον ἐγένετο· πάντες οἱ δοξάζοντες αὐτὴν ἐταπείνωσαν αὐτήν· ἴδον γὰρ
τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτῆς,
καί γε αὐτὴ στενάζουσα καὶ ἀπεστράφη ὀπίσω.
Jerusalem has grievously sinned; therefore she is removed; all that honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness; yea, she sighs, and turns backward.

Ἀκαθαρσία αὐτῆς πρὸς ποδῶν αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἐμνήσθη ἔσχατα
αὐτῆς
καὶ κατεβίβασεν ὑπέρογκα· οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτήν.
Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembered not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter.
ἴδὲ, Κύριε, τὴν ταπείνωσίν μου, ὅτι ἐμεγαλύνθη ἐχθρός. §1.10Ἰώθ.
"O Lord, behold my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself." Yod.
Κεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐξεπέτασεν θλίβων ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς,
εἶδεν γὰρ ἔθνη εἰσελθόντα εἰς τὸ ἁγίασμα αὐτῆς,
ἄ ἐνετείλω μὴ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς ἐκκλησίαν σου.
The adversary has spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things; for she has seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.

Πᾶς ὁ λαὸς αὐτῆς καταστενάζοντες, ζητοῦντες ἄρτον.
All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul.
ἔδωκαν τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς ἐν βρώσει τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι
δὲ, Κύριε, καὶ ἐπίβλεψον, ὅτι ἐγενήθη ἠτιμωμένη. §1.12Αάμεδ.
"See, O Lord, and consider; for I am become vile." Lamed.
Οἱ πρὸς ὑμᾶς πάντες παραπορευόμενοι ὁδόν,
ἐπιστρέψατε καὶ ἴδετε εἰ ἔστιν ἄλγος κατὰ τὸ ἄλγος μου ὅ
ἐγενήθη· φθεγξάμενος ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐταπείνωσέν με Κύριος ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ργῆς
θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ.
Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the Lord has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

From above has he sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; he has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back; he has made me desolate and faint all the day.

Ἐγρηγορήθη ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματά μου. ἐν χερσίν μου συνεπλάκησαν, ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλόν
ἠσθένησεν ἡ ἰσχύς μου, ὅτι ἔδωκεν Κύριος ἐν χερσίν μου
ὀδύνας, οὐ δυνήσομαι στῆναι.
He kept watch over my transgressions; in my hands they are twisted, they went up on my neck; my strength is failed, because the Lord has delivered me into their hands, I am not able to stand.

Ἐξῆρεν πάντας τοὺς ἰσχυρούς μου ὁ κύριος ἐκ μέσου μου,
ἐκάλεσεν ἐπʼ ἐμε καιρὸν τοῦ συντρίψαι ἐκλεκτούς μου·
The Lord has taken away all my mighty men from the midst of me; he has called an assembly against me to crush my young men; the Lord has trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
ληνὸν ἐπάτησεν Κύριος παρθένῳ θυγατρὶ Ἰούδα, ἐπὶ τούτοις
ἐγὼ κλαίω.
For these things I weep.
§1.16Ἅιν.
Ayin.
Ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου κατήγαγεν ὕδωρ,
ὅτι ἐμακρύνθη ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ ὁ παρακαλῶν με, ὁ ἐπιστρέφων
ψυχήν μου· ἐγένοντο οἱ υἱοί μου ἠφανισμένοι, ὅτι ἐκραταιώθη ὁ ἐχθρός.
Mine eye runs down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me; my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

Διεπετασεν Σειὼν χεῖρας αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτήν. ἐνετείλατο Κύριος τῷ Ἰακώβ· κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ οἱ θλίκδοντες
αὐτόν,
ἐγενήθη Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀποκαθημένην ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶυ. ¶
Zion spreads forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her; the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him; Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.

Δίκαιός ἐστιν Κύριος, ὅτι στόμα αὐτοῦ παρεπίκρανα. ἀκούσατε δή, πάντες οἱ λαοί, καὶ ἴδετε τὸ ἄλγος μου· παρθένοι μου καὶ νεανίσκοι μου ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ.
The Lord is righteous; for I have rebelled against his commandment; hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow; my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.

Ἐκάλεσα τοὺς ἐραστάς μου, αὐτοὶ δὲ παρελογίσαντό με· οἱ ἱερεῖς μου καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροί μου ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐξέλειπον,
ὅτι ἐζήτησαν βρῶσιν αὐτοῖς ἴνα ἐπιστρέψωσιν ψυχὰς αὐτῶν,
καὶ οὐχ εὗρον.
I called for my lovers, but they deceived me; my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to relieve their souls, and found none.

Ἵδε, Κύριε, ὅτι θλίμβομαι· ἡ κοιλία μου ἐταράχθη,
καὶ ἡ καρδία μου ἐστράφη ἐν ἐμοί
ὅτι παραπικραίνουσα παρεπικράνθην,
ἔξωθεν ἠτέκνωσεν μάχαιρα ὥσπερ θάνατος ἐν οἴκῳ.
"Behold, O Lord; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled; abroad the sword bereaves, at home there is as death." Shin.
§1.21Χσέν. Ἀκούσατε δὴ ὅτι στενάζω ἐγώ, οὐκ ἔστιυ ὁ παρακαλῶν με· πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί μου ἤκουσαν τὰ κακά μου καὶ ἐχάρησαν, ὅτι
σὺ ἐποίησας· ἐπήγαγες ἡμέραν, ἐκάλεσας καιρόν, ἐγένοντο ὄμοιοι ἐμοί.
"They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me; all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that thou hast done it; thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me." Taw.
§1.22Θαύ. Εἰσέλθοι πᾶσα ἡ κακία αὐτῶν κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου,
καὶ ἐπιφύλλισον αὐτοῖς ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησαν ἐπιφυλλίδα περὶ
πάντων τῶν ἁμαρτημάταον μου,
ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ στεναγμοί μου, καὶ ἡ καρδία μου λυπεῖται.
"Let all their wickedness come before thee; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions; for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint."
