Cleansing of Joshua the High Priest and the Branch

Passage 3 of 14 · Greek

Summary

Joshua the high priest is cleansed from filthiness and vindicated against the accuser, receiving the promise of the coming servant, the Branch.

And the Lord showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and the devil was standing at his right hand to oppose him.
And the Lord said to the devil, "May the Lord rebuke you, O devil! May the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you!
Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?" Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes and was standing before the angel.
And he answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, "Take off the filthy clothes from him." And he said to him, "Behold, I have taken away your iniquity, and clothe him with a long robe." "And place a clean turban on his head." So they placed a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments.
And the angel of the Lord was standing by.
And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured Joshua, saying, "Thus says the Lord Almighty: 'If you walk in my ways and keep my requirements, then you shall also rule my house, and if you guard my courts, I will give you places to walk among these who are standing here.
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your companions who sit before you, for they are men of omen. For behold, I am bringing my servant the Branch.
For behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua—on this single stone are seven eyes.
Behold, I am engraving its inscription, says the Lord Almighty, and I will wipe away all the iniquity of that land in a single day.
On that day, says the Lord Almighty, every one of you will invite his neighbor under his vine and under his fig tree.'"

Notes

  1. §3.1τοῦ ἀντικεῖσθαι αὐτῷ — The genitive article with the infinitive (τοῦ + infinitive) is used here as an adverbial construct to express purpose ("to oppose him").
  2. §3.2Ἐπιτιμήσαι — This is the third-person singular aorist active optative of ἐπιτιμάω, expressing a wish ("May the Lord rebuke you").
  3. §3.8Ἀνατολήν — Meaning literally "rising (of light)" or "east," this is the Septuagint's translation of the Hebrew word for "Branch" (tsemach), used here as a messianic title.
