Septuagint · Zechariah §14.1-14.21

Battle of the Day of the Lord and Universal Worship

Passage 14 of 14 · Greek

Summary

The text describes the nations' siege of Jerusalem, the Lord's direct intervention to deliver the city, and the horrific plague brought upon the enemies. It concludes with an eschatological vision of the surviving nations coming to worship the Lord in Jerusalem, and all common objects being consecrated to Him.

Behold, the days of the Lord are coming, and your spoil shall be divided in you.
And I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem for war, and the city shall be taken, and the houses shall be plundered, and the women shall be defiled, and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, but the remnant of my people shall by no means be destroyed from the city.
And the Lord shall go forth, and fight against those nations, as his day of battle array on the day of war.
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is opposite Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives shall be cleft, half of it toward the east and the sea, a very great chasm; and half of the mountain shall lean toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
And the valley of my mountains shall be blocked, and the valley of the mountains shall be joined unto Jasod, and it shall be blocked as it was blocked in the days of the earthquake, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah; and the Lord my God shall come, and all the holy ones with him.
And it shall be in that day there shall be no light, and there shall be cold and ice; it shall be one day, and that day is known to the Lord, and it is neither day nor night, and towards evening there shall be light.
And in that day living water shall go forth out of Jerusalem, half of it to the former sea, and half of it to the hinder sea; in summer and in spring it shall be so.
And the Lord shall be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord shall be one, and his name one, encompassing all the earth and the wilderness from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem.
But Ramah shall remain in its place, from the gate of Benjamin to the place of the first gate, to the gate of the corners, and to the tower of Hananeel, unto the winepresses of the king.
They shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more curse, and Jerusalem shall dwell securely.
And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations who made war against Jerusalem: their flesh shall rot while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall flow out of their holes, and their tongue shall rot in their mouth.
And it shall be in that day a great panic from the Lord shall be upon them; and they shall lay hold each one of the hand of his neighbor, and his hand shall be clasped with the hand of his neighbor.
And Judah also shall fight in Jerusalem, and shall gather the strength of all the nations round about, gold and silver and apparel in great abundance.
And this shall be the plague of the horses, and the mules, and the camels, and the asses, and all the beasts that are in those camps, according to this plague.
And it shall be, as many as are left of all the nations that came against Jerusalem, shall even come up year by year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.
And it shall be, as many of all the families of the earth as do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, even these shall be added to those.
And if the family of Egypt does not go up or come, upon them also shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that do not come up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
This shall be the sin of Egypt, and the sin of all the nations, as many as do not come up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
In that day that which is upon the bridle of the horse shall be holy to the Lord Almighty; and the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar.
And every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holy to the Lord Almighty; and all who sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe in them; and there shall no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord Almighty in that day.

Notes

  1. 14.2οὐ μὴ ἐξολοθρευθῶσιν — The combination of the negative particles οὐ and μή followed by the aorist passive subjunctive (ἐξολοθρευθῶσιν) forms an emphatic double negation expressing strong denial about the future ("shall by no means be destroyed").
  2. 14.5ζείου — A textual variant or scribal error for the proper noun Ὀζίου (referring to King Uzziah of Judah). It likely arose from a visual confusion of the Greek letters 'ΟΖ' as 'Ζ'.
  3. 14.12όυήσονται — A scribal error for ῥυήσονται (the future tense of the verb ῥέω, "to flow, melt away"), in which the initial letter ῥ was mistakenly written as ό.
