Call to Rebuild the Temple and the Response

Passage 1 of 2 · Greek

Summary

The prophet Haggai reproves the leaders and the people for neglecting the temple's reconstruction. In response to God's warnings and promptings, Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the remnant of the people begin rebuilding the house of the Lord.

§1.1ΕΝ τῷ δευτέρῳ ἔτει ἐπὶ Δαρίου τοῦ βασιλέως ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου ἐν χειρὶ Ἀγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων Εἰπὸν πρὸς Ζοροβάβελ τὸν τοῦ Σαλαθιὴλ ἐκ φυλῆς Ἰούδα καὶ πρὸς Ἰησοῦν τὸν τοῦ Ἰωσεδὲκ τὸν ἱερέα τὸν μέγαν λέγων §1.2Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Παντοκράτωρ λέγων Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος λέγουσιν Οὐχ ἤκει ὁ καιρὸς τοῦ οἰκοδομῆσαι τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου. §1.3καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου ἐν χειρὶ Ἀγγαίου τοῦ προφήτου λέγων §1.4Εἰ καιρὸς μέν ὑμῖν ἐστιν τοῦ οἰκεῖν ἐν οἴκοις ὑμῶν κοιλοστάθμοις, ὁ δὲ οἶκος ὑμῶν ἐξηρήμωται;
In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying: Speak to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the chief priest, saying: Thus says the Lord Almighty, saying: This people says, 'The time has not yet come to build the house of the Lord.' And the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying: "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?
§1.5καὶ νῦν τάδε λέγει Κύριος Παντοκράτωρ Τάξατε δὴ τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς ὑμῶν·
Now therefore, thus says the Lord Almighty: Set your hearts on your ways.
You have sown much, and brought in little; you have eaten, and are not satisfied; you have drunk, and are not filled; you have clothed yourselves, and are not warmed; and he who earns wages, earns them to put into a bag with holes." Thus says the Lord Almighty: "Set your hearts on your ways.
§1.8ἀνάβητε εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ κόψατε ξύλα καὶ οἰκοδομήσατε τὸν οἶκον, καὶ εὐδοκήσω ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐνδοξασθήσομαι, εἶπεν Κύριος.
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, says the Lord.
§1.9ἐπεβλέψατε εἰς πολλὰ καὶ ἐγένετο ὀλίγα, καὶ εἰσηνέχθη εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ ἐξεφύσησα αὐτά.
You looked for much, and, behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away.
διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος Παντοκράτωρ Ανθʼ ὧν ὁ οἶκός μού ἐστιν ἔρημος. ὑμεῖς δὲ διώκετε ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ,
Why? says the Lord Almighty. Because my house lies waste, while each of you runs to his own house.
§1.10διὰ τοῦτο ἀνέξει ὁ οὐρανὸς ἀπὸ δρόσου, καὶ ἡ γῆ ὑποστελεῖται τὰ ἐκφόρια αὐτῆς·
Therefore, because of you, the heaven has withheld its dew, and the earth has kept back its produce.
And I have called for a sword upon the land and upon the mountains, and upon the grain and upon the wine and upon the oil, and upon what the ground brings forth, and upon men and upon cattle, and upon all the labors of their hands." Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the chief priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him to them; and the people feared before the Lord.
And Haggai, the messenger of the Lord among the messengers of the Lord, spoke to the people, saying: "I am with you, says the Lord." And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the chief priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God.

Notes

  1. §1.1ἐν χειρὶ — A literal translation of the Hebrew prepositional expression "by the hand of" (בְּיַד, bəyad), functioning as a preposition meaning "through" or "by means of."
  2. §1.2Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος λέγουσιν — While the subject "this people" (Ὁ λαὸς οὗτος) is a singular collective noun, the verb "they say" (λέγουσιν) is plural. This is a typical example of constructio ad sensum (agreement according to sense), representing the grammatical accommodation of a collective singular to its plural meaning.
  3. §1.11ῥομφαίαν — Meaning "sword" in Greek, which likely reflects a translation of a Hebrew text that read "sword" (חֶרֶב, ḥereb) instead of "drought" (חֹרֶב, ḥōreb) found in the Masoretic Text, due to the identical consonantal root.
  4. §1.13ἐν ἀγγέλοις — Literally "among the messengers." This reading likely arose from misinterpreting the Hebrew abstract noun "in/with a mission" (בְּמַלְאֲכוּת, bəmal’ăḵūṯ) as a plural noun "among messengers" (מַלְאָכִים, mal’āḵîm), or points to an alternative Hebrew Vorlage.
