Septuagint · Zephaniah §3.1-3.20

Judgment on Jerusalem and Restoration of the Remnant

Passage 3 of 3 · Greek

Summary

Following the pronouncement of judgment on the proud and disobedient Jerusalem, the Lord promises to judge all nations, purify the speech of the peoples to worship Him, and ultimately rescue the humble remnant of Israel, restoring their fortune and bringing great joy to the daughter of Zion.

§3.1Aὕτη ἡ πόλις ἡ φαυλίστρια, ἡ κατοικοῦσα ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι, ἡ λέγουσα ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς Ἐγὼ εἰμι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν μετʼ ἐμὲ ἔτι. πῶς ἐγενήθη εἰς ἀφανισμόν, νομὴ θηρίων·
This is the rebellious city, that dwelt in hope, that said in her heart, "I am, and there is none other beside me." How is she become a desolation, a pasture for wild beasts!
πᾶς ὁ διαπορευόμενος (1) δι᾿ αὐτῆς συριεῖ καὶ κινήσει τὰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ.
Everyone that passes through her shall hiss and wag his hands.
§3.2ὢ ἡ ἐπιφανὴς (2) καὶ ἀπολελυτρωμένη πόλις, ἡ περιστερά·
O the illustrious and redeemed city, the dove!
(2)οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν φωνῆς, οὐκ ἐδέξατο παιδίαν, ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ οὐκ ἐπεποίθει, καὶ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτῆς οὐκ ἤγγισεν.
She heard not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord, and she drew not near to her God.
§3.3οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῆς ἐν αὐτῇ ὡς λέοντες ὠρυόμενοι· οἱ κριταὶ αὐτῆς ὡς λύκοι τῆς Ἀραβίας, οὐχ ὑπελίποντο εἰς τὸ πρωί·
Her princes within her are as roaring lions; her judges are as the wolves of Arabia, they left nothing until the morning.
§3.4οἱ προφῆται αὐτῆς πνευματοφόροι, ἄνδρες καταφρονηταί· οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῆς βεβηλοῦσιν τὰ ἅγια καὶ ἀσεβοῦσιν νόμον.
Her prophets are light and treacherous persons; her priests profane the holy things and do violence to the law.
§3.5ὁ δὲ κύριος δίκαιος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς καὶ οὐ μὴ ποιήσῃ ἄδικον· πρωὶ πρωὶ δώσει κρίμα αὐτοῦ εἰς φῶς, καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρύβη καὶ οὐκ ἔγνω ἀδικίαν ἐν ἀπαιτήσει, καὶ οὐκ εἰς νῖκος ἀδικίαν.
But the righteous Lord is in the midst of her, and he will by no means do injustice; morning by morning he will bring his judgment to light, and it is not hidden; and he knows not injustice in exaction, nor injustice to the end.
§3.6ἐν διαφθορᾷ κατέσπασα ὑπερηφάνους, ἠφανίσθησαν γωνίαι αὐτῶν· ἐξερημώσω τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν τὸ παράπαν τοῦ μὴ διοδεύειν· ἐξέλιπον αἱ πόλεις αὐτῶν παρὰ τὸ μηδένα ὑπάρχειν μηδέ κατοικεῖν.
In destruction I have brought down the proud, their corner towers are demolished; I will make their ways completely desolate, so that no one passes through; their cities are ruined, because there is no one left, nor any inhabitant.
§3.7εἶπα Πλὴν φοβεῖσθέ με καὶ δέξασθε παιδείαν, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξολοθρευθῆτε ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῆς, πάντα ὅσα ἐξεδίκησα ἐπʼ αὐτήν· ἑτοιμάζου ὄρθρισον, ἔφθαρται πᾶσα ἡ ἐπιφυλλὶς αὐτῶν.
I said, "Only fear me, and receive instruction, and you shall not be cut off from her eyes, even all the things for which I took vengeance upon her." But they prepared themselves, they rose early in the morning, all their remnant was corrupted.
"Therefore wait for me," says the Lord, "until the day of my rising up for testimony; for my judgment is to gather the nations, to assemble kings, to pour out upon them all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be consumed in the fire of my jealousy.
§3.9ὅτι τότε μεταστρέψω ἐπὶ λαοὺς γλῶσσαν εἰς γενεὰν αὐτῆς, τοῦ ἐπικαλεῖσθαι πάντας ¶ τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου, τοῦ δουλεύειν αὐτῷ ὑπὸ ζυγὸν ἕνα.
For then will I turn to the peoples a language for her generation, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him under one yoke.
§3.10ἐκ περάτων ποταμῶν Αἰθιοπίας προσδέξομαι ἐν διεσπαρμένοις μου, οἴσουσιν θυσίας μοι.
From the borders of the rivers of Ethiopia will I receive my dispersed ones; they shall bring sacrifices to me.
In that day you shall not be ashamed of all your doings wherein you have transgressed against me; for then I will take away from you the boasts of your pride, and you shall no more be haughty in my holy mountain.
And I will leave in you a meek and humble people, and they shall reverence the name of the Lord. ¹³The remnant of Israel shall do no injustice, neither shall they speak vanity, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth; for they shall feed and lie down, and there shall be none to make them afraid.
§3.14Καῖρε, θύγατερ Σειών, κήρυσσε, θύγατερ Ἰερουσαλήμ· εὐφραίνου καὶ κατατέρπου ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας σου, θύγατερ Ἰερουσαλήμ.
Rejoice, O daughter of Sion; cry aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; rejoice and delight yourself with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem.
§3.15περιεῖλεν Κύριος τὰ ἀδικήματά σου, λελύτρωταί σε ἐκ χειρὸς ἐχθρῶν σου· βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ Κύριος ἐν μέσῳ σου, οὐκ ὄψῃ κακὰ οὐκέτι.
The Lord has taken away your injustices, he has redeemed you from the hand of your enemies; the Lord, the King of Israel, is in the midst of you; you shall see evil no more.
In that time the Lord shall say to Jerusalem, "Fear not, Sion; let not your hands be slack." The Lord your God is in you; the Mighty One shall save you; he will bring joy upon you, and will renew you in his love, and he will rejoice over you with delight as in a day of festival.
§3.18καὶ συνάξω τοὺς συντετριμμένους·
And I will gather your broken ones.
οὐαί, τίς ἔλαβεν ἐπʼ αὐτὴν ὀνειδισμόν;
Woe, who has taken up a reproach against her?
§3.19ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ποιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἕνεκεν σοῦ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ σώσω τὴν ἐκπεπιεσμένην καὶ τὴν ἀπωσμένην· εἰσδέξομαι αὐτοὺς εἰς καύχημα καὶ ὀνομαστοὺς ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ.
Behold, I will work in you for your sake at that time," says the Lord, "and I will save her that was oppressed, and receive her that was rejected; and I will make them a praise and famous in all the earth.
And they shall be ashamed at that time when I do well to you, and at the time when I receive you; for I will make you famous and a praise among all the peoples of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes," says the Lord.

Notes

  1. 3.2ὢ ἡ ἐπιφανὴς καὶ ἀπολελυτρωμένη πόλις, ἡ περιστερά — The Hebrew words meaning "rebellious, defiled, oppressing city" are translated in the Septuagint (LXX) by Greek words with positive nuances: "illustrious/prominent" (ἐπιφανής), "redeemed" (ἀπολελυτρωμένη), and "dove" (περιστερά). Although this appears to contradict the immediately following indictment, the translation follows the Greek text literally, which can be understood ironically or contrastively.
  2. 3.5καὶ οὐκ εἰς νῖκος ἀδικίαν — The phrase εἰς νῖκος is an idiomatic adverbial expression meaning "unto victory, finally, forever." With the verb omitted, it means "and [He does not leave] injustice unto victory" or "[He does not allow] injustice to triumph in the end," continuing the negative force of the preceding clauses.
  3. 3.7ἑτοιμάζου ὄρθρισον — Two imperative forms (or a literal Greek rendering of a Hebrew verbal hendiadys meaning "they rose early [to act corruptly]"). Here it functions idiomatically to emphasize the eagerness or haste with which they acted, translated as "they prepared themselves and rose early" in their corrupt deeds.
  4. 3.9γλῶσσαν εἰς γενεὰν αὐτῆς — A difficult phrase unique to the Septuagint (LXX), attempting to render the Hebrew for "pure lip (speech)." It is understood as "changing their language to fit her generation (or to be appropriate for them)," implying a restoration of a pure, common tongue for worshiping the Lord.
