Lament for Israel and the Call for Justice

Passage 5 of 9 · Greek

Summary

The prophet laments the downfall of Israel and calls on the people to seek God instead of empty rituals, demanding that justice and righteousness flow like a river.

Hear this word of the Lord which I take up against you as a lamentation, O house of Israel.
"She has fallen, she shall no more rise again; the virgin of Israel has stumbled upon her land, there is no one to raise her up." Therefore thus says the Lord God: "The city from which a thousand went out shall have a hundred left, and the one from which a hundred went out shall have ten left to the house of Israel." For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel: "Seek me, and you shall live; and do not seek Bethel, and do not enter into Galgala, and do not cross over to the well of the oath; for Galgala shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall become as though it were not." Seek the Lord, and live, lest the house of Joseph flare up like fire and devour it, and there be no one to quench it for the house of Israel, you who turn justice into bitterness and cast down righteousness to the earth.
He who makes all things and transforms them, and turns the shadow of death into morning, and darkens the day into night; who calls for the water of the sea and pours it out upon the face of the earth—the Lord is his name; he who dispenses destruction upon strength, and brings ruin upon the stronghold.
They hated him who reproves in the gates, and they abhorred a holy word.
Therefore, because you trampled upon the poor and took choice gifts from them, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted desirable vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.
For I know your many transgressions and your mighty sins, you who oppress the righteous, who take bribes, and who turn aside the needy in the gates.
Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in that time, for it is an evil time.
Seek good and not evil, so that you may live; and thus the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you have said: 'We have hated evil and loved good.' And establish justice in the gates, so that the Lord God Almighty may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.
Therefore thus says the Lord God Almighty: "In all the broad streets there shall be wailing, and in all the ways it shall be said, 'Alas, alas!' The husbandman shall be called to mourning and lamentation, and those who know lamentation to wailing, and in all ways there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you," said the Lord.
Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
For what is this day of the Lord to you? It is darkness, and not light.
As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into his house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him.
§5.20οὐχὶ σκότος ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου καὶ οὐ φῶς καὶ γνόφος οὐκ ἔχων φέγγος αὕτη;
Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, even thick darkness with no brightness in it?
"I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in the scent of sacrifices in your solemn assemblies.
For even if you bring me your burnt offerings and sacrifices, I will not accept them, nor will I look upon your peace offerings of fat beasts.
Take away from me the noise of your songs, and I will not hear the melody of your instruments.
But let justice roll down like water, and righteousness like an impassable torrent.
§5.25μὴ σφάγια καὶ θυσίας προσηνέγκατέ μοι ἐν τῇ ἐρήμᾳῳ μ ἔτη, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;
Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
And you took up the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of your god Raiphan, their images which you made for yourselves.
And I will transport you beyond Damascus," says the Lord, the Almighty God is his name.

Notes

  1. 5.2οὐκέτι μὴ προσθήσει τοῦ ἀναστῆναι — The strong double negation οὐ μὴ is followed by the future indicative (προσθήσει) and a genitive infinitive (τοῦ ἀναστῆναι) dependent on the verb meaning "to add" or "to repeat". This is a literal rendering of a Hebrew idiom (adding to do something) meaning "she shall never rise again."
  2. 5.7ὁ ποιῶν εἰς ὕψος κρίμα — The participle clause is in the nominative but lacks a main verb, functioning essentially as a vocative call or pointing forward to the subjects of the subsequent actions (such as ἐμίσησαν in 5.10).
  3. 5.11ἀυθʼ ὧν — A contraction of the preposition ἀντί and the relative pronoun ὧν (equivalent to ἀνθ' ὧν), used here as a causal conjunction meaning "because" or "inasmuch as."
  4. 5.25μὴ σφάγια καὶ θυσίας προσηνέγκατέ μοι — A question introduced by the negative particle μή, which rhetorically expects a negative answer ("No, you did not").
