§5.1Τότε προσκαλεσάμενος Ἕρμωνα τὸν πρὸς τῇ τῶν ἐλεφάντων ἐπιμελείᾳ, βαρείᾳ μεμεστωμένος ὀργῇ καὶ χόλῳ κατὰ πᾶν ἀμετάθετος, §5.2ἐκέλευσεν ὑπὸ τὴν ἐρχομένην ἡμέραν δαψιλέσι δράκεσι λιβανωτοῦ καὶ οἴνῳ πλείονι ἀκράτῳ ἅπαντας τοὺς ἐλέφαντας ποτίσαι, ὄντας τὸν ἀριθμὸν πεντακοσίους· καὶ ἀγριωθέντας τῇ τοῦ πόματος ἀφθόνῳ χορηγίᾳ εἰσαγαγεῖν πρὸς συνάντησιν τοῦ μόρου τῶν Ἰουδαίων.
Then, having summoned Hermon, who was in charge of the elephants, the king, filled with heavy wrath and anger, and in every way unchangeable, commanded him to drug all the elephants, numbering five hundred, with abundant handfuls of frankincense and a large amount of unmixed wine before the coming day, and having made them wild with the rich provision of the drink, to lead them out to meet the doom of the Jews.
§5.3ὁ μὲν τάδε προστάσσων ἐτρέπετο πρὸς τὴν εὐωχίαν, συναγαγὼν τοὺς μάλιστα τῶν φίλων καὶ τῆς στρατιᾶς ἀπεχθῶς ἔχοντας πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους.
Having given these orders, he turned to feasting, assembling those of his friends and the military who were most hostile to the Jews.
§5.4ὁ δὲ ἐλεφαντάρχης τὸ προσταγὲν ἀραρότως Ἕρμων συνετέλει.
And Hermon, the keeper of the elephants, executed what was commanded steadfastly.
§5.5οἵ τε πρὸς τούτοις λειτουργοὶ κατὰ τὴν ἑσπέραν ἐξιόντες τὰς τῶν ταλαιπωρούντων ἐδέσμευον χεῖρας, τήν τε λοιπὴν ἐμηχανῶντο περὶ αὐτοὺς ἀσφάλειαν ἔννυχον, δόξαντες ὁμοῦ λήμψεσθαι τὸ φῦλον πέρας τῆς ὀλεθρίας.
And the attendants with them went out in the evening and bound the hands of the miserable people, and arranged the rest of the security for them during the night, thinking that the nation would at once receive the end of their destruction.
§5.6οἱ δὲ πάσης σκέπης ἔρημοι δοκοῦντες εἶναι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν Ἰουδαῖοι, διὰ τὴν πάντοθεν περιέχουσαν αὐτοὺς μετὰ δεσμῶν ἀνάγκην, §5.7τὸν παντοκράτορα κύριον καὶ πάσης δυνάμεως δυναστεύοντα, ἐλεήμονα θεὸν αὐτῶν καὶ πατέρα, δυσκαταπαύστῳ βοῇ πάντες μετὰ δακρύων ἐπεκαλέσαντο, δεόμενοι §5.8τὴν κατ᾿ αὐτῶν μεταστρέψαι βουλὴν ἀνοσίαν, καὶ ῥύσασθαι αὐτοὺς μετὰ μεγαλομεροῦς ἐπιφανείας ἐκ τοῦ παρὰ πόδας ἐν ἑτοίμῳ μόρου.
But the Jews, appearing to the Gentiles to be destitute of all protection, because of the constraint of chains that surrounded them on every side, called upon the Almighty Lord, who rules over all power, their merciful God and Father, with an unceasing cry and with tears, praying to turn back the unholy counsel against them, and to deliver them with a magnificent manifestation from the imminent doom lying at their feet.
§5.9τούτων μὲν οὖν ἡ λιτανία ἐκτενῶς ἀνέβαινεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν.
So their supplication ascended earnestly into heaven.
§5.10ὁ δὲ Ἕρμων τοὺς ἀνηλεεῖς ἐλέφαντας ποτίσας πεπληρωμένους τῆς τοῦ οἴνου πολλῆς χορηγίας καὶ τοῦ λιβάνου μεμεστωμένους, ὄρθριος ἐπὶ τὴν αὐλὴν παρῆν περὶ τούτων προσαγγεῖλαι τῷ βασιλεῖ.
And Hermon, having drugged the pitiless elephants, filled with the large supply of wine and stuffed with frankincense, was present at the court early in the morning to report these things to the king.
§5.11τὸ δὲ ἀπʼ αἰῶνος κτίσμα χρόνου καλὸν ἐν νυκτὶ καὶ ἡμέρᾳ ἐπιβαλλόμενον ὑπὸ τοῦ χαριζομένου πᾶσιν, οἷς ἂν αὐτὸς θελήσει, ὕπνου μέρος ἀπέστειλεν εἰς τὸν βασιλέα· §5.12καὶ ἡδίστῳ καὶ βαθεῖ κατεσχέθη τῇ ἐνεργείᾳ τοῦ δεσπότου, τῆς ἀθέσμου μὲν προθέσεως πολὺ διεσφαλμένος, τοῦ δὲ ἀμεταθέτου λογισμοῦ μεγάλως διεψευσμένος.
But that portion of sleep, a beautiful creation of time from eternity, bestowed in the night and day by Him who grants it freely to whomever He wills, was sent upon the king by the Lord; and he was held by a most pleasant and deep sleep through the working of the Master, being greatly frustrated in his unlawful purpose and highly deceived in his unchangeable counsel.
§5.13οἵ τε Ἰουδαῖοι τὴν προσημανθεῖσαν ὥραν διαφυγόντες, τὸν ἅγιον ᾔνουν θεὸν αὐτῶν· καὶ πάλιν ἠξίουν τὸν εὐκατάλλακτον δεῖξαι μεγαλοσθενοῦς ἑαυτοῦ χειρὸς κράτος ἔθνεσιν ὑπερηφάνοις.
And the Jews, having escaped the pre-appointed hour, ¦p.720 praised their holy God; and again they besought Him who is easily reconciled to show the power of His mighty hand to the arrogant Gentiles.
§5.14μεσούσης δὲ ἤδη δεκάτης ὥρας σχεδόν, ὁ πρὸς ταῖς κλήσεσιν τεταγμένος, ἀθρόους τοὺς κλητοὺς ἰδών, ἔνυξεν προσελθὼν τὸν βασιλέα.
Now when nearly the middle of the tenth hour had arrived, the one appointed over invitations, seeing that the guests were gathered, came and nudged the king.
§5.15καὶ μόλις διεγείρας, ὑπέδειξε τὸν τῆς συμποσίας καιρὸν ἤδη παρατρέχοντα, τὸν περὶ τούτων λόγον ποιούμενος.
And having with difficulty aroused him, he pointed out that the time of the banquet was already passing, making a report concerning these matters.
§5.16ὃν ὁ βασιλεὺς λογισάμενος, καὶ τραπεὶς εἰς τὸν πότον, ἐκέλευσεν τοὺς παραγεγονότας ἐπὶ τὴν συμποσίαν ἄντικρυς ἀνακλῖναι αὐτοῦ.
And the king, taking this into consideration and turning to the banquet, commanded those who had arrived for the feast to recline opposite him.
§5.17οὗ καὶ γενομένου, παρῄνει εἰς εὐωχίαν δόντας ἑαυτούς, τὸ παρὸν τῆς συμποσίας ἐπὶ πολὺ γεραιρομένους εἰς εὐφροσύνην καταθέσθαι μέρος.
When this was done, he exhorted them to give themselves to feasting, and to spend the present part of the banquet in great merriment and honor.
§5.18ἐπὶ πλεῖον δὲ προσκοπτούσης τῆς ὁμιλίας, τὸν Ἕρμωνα προσκαλεσάμενος ὁ βασιλεύς, μετὰ πικρίας ἀπειλῆς ἐπυνθάνετο τίνος ἕνεκεν αἰτίας ἰάθησαν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τὴν περιοῦσαν ἡμέραν περιβεβιωκότες.
As the conversation progressed further, the king summoned Hermon and inquired with a bitter threat for what reason the Jews had survived, living through the remaining day.
§5.19τοῦ δὲ ὑποδείξαντος ὅτι νυκτὸς τὸ προσταγὲν ἐπὶ τέλος ἠγιοχέναι, καὶ τῶν φίλων αὐτῶν προσμαρτυρησάντων· §5.20τὴν ὠμότητα χείρονα Φαλάριδος ἐσχηκὼς ἔφη τὸ τῆς σήμερον ὕπνῳ χάριν ἔχειν αὐτούς· ἀνυπερθέτως δὲ εἰς τὴν ὑποστέλλουσαν ἡμέραν κατὰ τὸ ὅμοιον ἑτοίμασον τοὺς ἐλέφαντας ἐπὶ τὸν τῶν ἀθεμίτων Ἰουδαίων ἀφανισμόν. §5.21εἰπόντος δὲ τοῦ βασιλέως, ἀσμένως πάντες μετὰ χαρᾶς οἱ παρόντες ὁμοῦ συναινέσαντες, εἰς τὸν ἴδιον οἶκον ἕκαστος ἀνέλυσεν.
When Hermon pointed out that he had completed what was commanded during the night, and his friends also testified to it, having a cruelty worse than that of Phalaris, the king said that they should be thankful to sleep for today, but "without delay, prepare the elephants in the same manner for the coming day for the destruction of the lawless Jews." And when the king had spoken, all who were present together gladly assented with joy, and each returned to his own house.
§5.22καὶ οὐχ οὕτως εἰς ὕπνον κατεχρήσαντο τὸν χρόνον τῆς νυκτός, ὡς εἰς τὸ παντοίους μηχανᾶσθαι τοῖς ταλαιπώροις δοκοῦσιν ἐμπαιγμούς.
And they did not spend the time of the night so much in sleep as in devising all kinds of mockeries for those who seemed to be miserable.
§5.23Ἄρτι δὲ ἀλεκτρυὼν ἐκέκραγεν ὄρθριος, καὶ τὰ θηρία καθωπλικὼς ὁ Ἕρμων ἐν τῷ μεγάλῳ περιστύλῳ διεκίνει.
And just as the cock crowed in the morning, Hermon, having equipped the beasts, was moving them about in the great colonnade.
§5.24τὰ δὲ κατὰ τὴν πόλιν πλήθη συνήθροιστο πρὸς τὴν οἰκτροτάτην θεωρίαν, προσδοκῶντα τὴν πρωίαν μετὰ σπουδῆς.
And the multitudes throughout the city gathered for the most pitiable spectacle, eagerly awaiting the dawn.
§5.25οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι κατὰ τὸν ἀμερῆ ψυχουλκούμενοι χρόνον, πολύδακρυν ἱκετίαν ἐν μέλεσιν γοεροῖς τείνοντες τὰς χεῖρας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐδέοντο τοῦ μεγίστου θεοῦ πάλιν αὐτοῖς βοηθῆσαι συντόμως.
But the Jews, whose souls were being dragged at the very edge of death, stretching out their hands to heaven with tearful supplication in mournful songs, prayed to the greatest God to help them quickly again.
§5.26οὔπω δὲ ἡλίου βολαὶ κατεπείροντο, καὶ τοῦ βασιλέως τοὺς φίλους ἐκδεχομένου, ὁ Ἑρμων παραστὰς ἐπικαλεῖ πρὸς τὴν ἔξοδον, ὑποδεικνὺς τὸ πρόθυμον τοῦ βασιλέως ἐν ἑτοίμῳ κεῖσθαι.
And before the rays of the sun were pressing on, and ¦p.721 while the king was expecting his friends, Hermon stood by and called him to set forth, showing that the eagerness of the king was lying ready.
