§3.1Καὶ λυπηθεὶς ἔκλαυσα, καὶ προσευξάμην μετʼ ὀδύνης (²)λέγων §3.2Δίκαιος εἶ, Κύριε, καὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ὁδοί σου ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ ἀλήθεια, καὶ κρίσιν ἀληθινὴν καὶ δικαίαν σὺ κρίνεις εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
And being grieved I wept, and prayed in anguish, saying, "Righteous art thou, O Lord, and all thy works and all thy ways are mercy and truth, and thou judgest true and righteous judgment for ever.
§3.3μνήσθητί μου καὶ ἐπίβλεψον ἐπʼ ἐμέ· μὴ ἐκδικῇς ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις μου καὶ τοῖς ἀγνοήμασίν μου καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου, ἃ ἥμαρτον ἐνώπιόν σου.
Remember me, and look upon me; take not vengeance on me for my sins and my ignorances, and those of my fathers, which sinned before thee.
§3.4παρήκουσαν γὰρ τῶν ἐντολῶν σου· ἔδωκας ἡμᾶς εἰς διαρπαγὴν καὶ αἰχμαλωσίαν καὶ θάνατον καὶ παραβολὴν ὀνειδισμοῦ πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐν οἷς ἐσκορπίσμεθα.
For they disobeyed thy commandments; and thou hast delivered us for a spoil, and captivity, and death, and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed.
§3.5καὶ νῦν πολλαὶ αἱ κρίσεις σού εἰσιν ἀληθιναί, ἐξ ἐμοῦ ποιῆσαι περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου καὶ τῶν πατέρων μου, ὅτι οὐκ ἐποιήσαμεν τὰς ἐντολάς σου· οὐ γὰρ ἐπορεύθημεν ἐν ἀληθεία ἐνώπιόν σου.
And now thy many judgments are true, to execute upon me according to my sins and my fathers'; because we have not kept thy commandments, neither have we walked in truth before thee.
§3.6καὶ νῦν κατὰ τὸ ἀρεστόν σου ποίησον μετʼ ἐμοῦ· ἐπίταξον ἀναλαβεῖν τὸ πνεῦμά μου, ὅπως ἀπολυθῶ καὶ γένωμαι γῆ· διότι λυσιτελεῖ μοι ἀποθανεῖν ἡ ζῆν, ὅτι ὀνειδισμοὺς ψευδεῖς ἤκουσα, λύπη ἐστὶν πολλὴ ἐν ἐμοί ἐπίταξον ἀπολυθῆναί με τῆς ἀνάγκης δή εἰς τὸν αἰώνιον τόπον, μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ. §3.7Ἐν τῇ αὐτῇ ἡμέρᾳ συνέβη τῇ θυγατρὶ Ῥαγουὴλ Σάρρᾳ ἐν Ἐκβατάνοις τῆς Μηδείας, καὶ ταύτην ὀνειδισθῆναι ὑπὸ παιδισκῶν πατρὸς αὐτῆς,
And now deal with me according to thy pleasure; command my spirit to be taken up, that I may be released and become earth; for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and there is much sorrow in me; command that I be now released from this distress into the everlasting place, and turn not away thy face from me." On that same day it happened to Sarah the daughter of Raguel in Ecbatana of Media, that she also was reproached by her father's maidservants; because she had been given to seven husbands, and Asmodeus the evil demon had slain them before they had been with her as is customary with wives.
§3.8ὅτι ἦν δεδομένη ἀνδράσιν ἑπτά, καὶ Ἀσμόδαυς τὸ πονηρὸν δαιμόνιον ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτοὺς πρὶν ἢ γενέσθαι αὐτοὺς μετʼ αὐτῆς ὡς ἐν γυναιξίν· (9)καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῇ Οὐ συνίεις ἀποπνίγουσά σου τοὺς ἄνδρας;
And they said to her, "Do you not understand that you are strangling your husbands?
ἤδη ἑπτὰ ἔσχες. καὶ ἑνὸς αὐτῶν οὐκ ὠνάσθης.
You have already had seven, and you have not benefited from even one of them.
§3.9τί ἡμᾶς μαστιγοῖς;
Why do you scourge us?
εἰ ἀπέθανον, βάδιζε μετʼ αὐτῶν· μὴ ἴδοιμέν σου υἱὸν ἡ θυγατέρα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. §3.10ταῦτα ἀκούσασα ἐλυπήθη σφόδρα ὥστε ἀπάγξασθαι· καὶ εἶπεν Μία μέν εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου· ἐὰν ποιήσω τοῦτο, ὄνειδος αὐτῷ ἔσται, καὶ τὸ γῆρας αὐτοῦ κατάξω μετʼ ὀδύνης εἰς ἄδου. §3.11καὶ ἐδεήθη πρὸς τῆ θυρίδι καὶ εἶπεν Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε ὁ θεός μου, καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ἔντιμον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· εὐλογήσαισάν σε πάντα τὰ ἔργα σου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
If they are dead, go your way with them; let us never see of you either son or daughter." When she heard these things, she was deeply grieved, so that she thought of hanging herself; but she said, "I am the only daughter of my father; if I do this, it will be a reproach to him, and I shall bring down his old age with sorrow to the grave." And she prayed by the window, and said, "Blessed art thou, O Lord my God, and blessed is thy holy and honorable name for ever; let all thy works bless thee for ever.
§3.12καὶ νῦν, Κύριε, τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ τὸ πρόσωπόν μου εἰς σὲ δέδωκα.
And now, O Lord, I have set my eyes and my face toward thee.
§3.13εἰπὸν ἀπολῦσαί με ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ μὴ ἀκοῦσαί με μηκέτι ὀνειδισμόν.
Command that I be released from the earth, and that I hear reproach no more.
§3.14σὺ γινώσκεις, Κύριε, ὅτι καθαρά εἰμι ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας καὶ ἀνδρός, §3.15καὶ οὐκ ἐμόλυνα τὸ ὄνομά μου οὐδὲ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ πατρός μου ἐν τῇ γῇ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας μου. μονογενής εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου, καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχει αὐτῷ παιδίον ὃ κληρονομήσει αὐτόν, οὐδὲ ἀδελφὸς ἐγγὺς οὐδὲ ὑπάρχων αὐτῷ υἱὸς ἵνα συντηρήσω ἐμαυτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα. ἤδη ἀπώλοντό μοι ἑπτά·
Thou knowest, Lord, that I am pure from all sin with man, and that I have not polluted my name, nor the name of my father, in the land of my captivity; I am the only daughter of my father, and he has no child to be his heir, neither any near kinsman, nor any son of his alive, for whom I should keep myself for a wife; seven husbands of mine are already dead; why should I live?
ἵνα τί μοι ζῆν; καὶ εἰ μὴ δοκεῖ σοι ἀποκτεῖναί με, ἐπίταξον ἐπιβλέψαι ἐπʼ ἐμὲ καὶ ἐλεῆσαί με, καὶ μηκέτι ἀκοῦσαί με ὀνειδισμόν. §3.16Καὶ εἰσηκούσθη προσευχὴ ἀμφοτέρων ἐνώπιον τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου Ῥαφαήλ, §3.17καὶ ἀπεστάλη ἰάσασθαι τοὺς δύο, τοῦ Τωβεὶτ λεπίσαι τὰ λευκώματα, καὶ Σάρραν τὴν τοῦ Ῥαγουὴλ δοῦναι Τωβίᾳ τῷ υἱῷ Τωβεὶτ γυναῖκα, καὶ δῆσαι Ἀσμόδαυν τὸ πονηρὸν δαιμόνιον, διότι Τωβίᾳ ἐπιβάλλει κληρονομῆσαι αὐτήν.
And if it please thee not to slay me, command to look upon me and have pity on me, and that I hear no more reproach." And the prayer of both was heard before the glory of the great Raphael, and he was sent to heal them both: to scale away the white films from Tobit's eyes, and to give Sarah the daughter of Raguel for a wife to Tobias the son of Tobit, and to bind Asmodeus the evil demon; because it belonged to Tobias to inherit her.
ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπιστρέψας Τωβεὶτ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ, καὶ Σάρρα ἡ τοῦ Ῥαγουὴλ κατέβη ἐκ τοῦ ὑπερῴου αὐτῆς.
At that very time Tobit returned and entered into his house, and Sarah the daughter of Raguel came down from her upper chamber.
