The book of the words of Tobit, son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Aduel, son of Gabael, of the seed of Asiel, of the tribe of Naphtali; who in the time of Enemessaros king of the Assyrians was led captive out of Thisbe, which is at the right hand of Kydios of Naphtali in Galilee above Asher.
I, Tobit, walked in the ways of truth and righteousness all the days of my life, and I performed many acts of charity for my kindred and my nation who went with me into captivity into the land of the Assyrians, to Nineveh.
And when I was in my own country, in the land of Israel, while I was yet young, all the tribe of Naphtali my father fell away from the house of Jerusalem, which was chosen from all the tribes of Israel, that all the tribes should sacrifice there, where the temple of the dwelling of the Most High was consecrated and built for all generations forever.
And all the tribes which fell away together sacrificed to the heifer Baal, and so did the house of Naphtali my father.
But I alone went often to Jerusalem at the feasts, as it was written for all Israel by an everlasting decree, having the firstfruits and the tenths of the increase, with that which was first shorn; and these I gave to the priests the sons of Aaron for the altar of the increase.
The tenth I gave to the sons of Levi, who ministered at Jerusalem, and the second tenth I sold, and went, and spent it in Jerusalem each year; and the third tenth I gave to whom it was meet, as Deborah my father's mother had commanded, because I was left an orphan by my father.
And when I became a man, I took Anna to wife of the seed of our own family, and of her I begot Tobias.
And when we were carried away captive to Nineveh, all my brethren and those of my race ate of the bread of the Gentiles.
But I kept myself from eating, because I remembered God with all my soul.
And the Most High gave me grace and favour in the sight of Enemessaros, and I was his buyer.
And I went into Media, and left in trust with Gabael, the brother of Gabrias, at Rages of Media, ten talents of silver.
But when Enemessaros was dead, Achireilos his son reigned in his stead; and his ways became unstable, and I could no longer go into Media.
And in the time of Enemessaros I did many acts of charity to my brethren; I gave my bread to the hungry, and my garments to the naked, and if I saw any of my race dead and cast out behind the wall of Nineveh, I buried him.
And if Achireilos the king slew any, when he came fleeing from Judea, I buried them secretly; for he slew many in his wrath, and the bodies were sought for by the king, but they were not found.
But one of those in Nineveh went and showed the king concerning me, that I was burying them, and I hid myself; and when I knew that I was sought for to be put to death, I withdrew in fear.
And all my goods were snatched away, and nothing was left to me, except Anna my wife and Tobit my son.
And there passed not fifty days before his two sons killed him, and they fled into the mountains of Ararat; and Sacherdonos his son reigned in his stead, and he appointed Achiacharos, my brother Anael's son, over all the accounts of his kingdom, and over all the administration.
And Achiacharos petitioned for me, and I came to Nineveh.
Now Achiacharos was cupbearer, and keeper of the signet, and administrator, and accountant; and Sacherdonos appointed him next to himself; and he was my cousin.
