For one who has already crossed the Asopus and is about ten stades distant from the city, there are the ruins of Potniae, and in them a grove of Demeter and the Maid.
The statues in the river that flows past Potniae they call after the goddesses.
At a stated time they perform their other established rites, and let down newborn pigs into the so-called chambers; that these pigs appear in Dodona in the corresponding season of the following year is a story which someone else, perhaps, will believe. Here there is also a temple of Dionysus, surnamed Aegobolus.
For while sacrificing to the god, they were once led by drunkenness to such violence that they even killed the priest of Dionysus; and immediately after the murder a pestilence seized them, and there came to them an oracle from Delphi, that the cure was to sacrifice a beautiful boy to Dionysus.
But not many years later, they say that the god substituted a goat for them as a victim in place of the boy.
There is also shown a well in Potniae, and they say that the local horses go mad if they drink of this water. As you go from Potniae to Thebes, there is on the right of the road a small enclosure and columns in it; here they believe the earth opened to receive Amphiaraus, adding further that neither do birds perch upon these columns, nor will any animal, tame or wild, graze upon the grass there.
For the Thebans there were seven gates in the circuit of the ancient wall, and they still remain even to our day.
I learned that their names were given to them from Electra, the sister of Cadmus, and the Proetides from a local man Proetus; but the age of Proetus and his earlier lineage were difficult to discover.
They say the Neistae gates were named for the following reason.
Among the strings of a lyre they call the last one nete; this string, then, they say Amphion invented at these gates.
But I have also heard that the son of Zethus, the brother of Amphion, was named Neis, and that from this Neis these gates were called. The Crenaian gates, and the Hypsistan, they name for the following reason; near the Hypsistan gates is a sanctuary of Zeus surnamed Hypsistus.
The gates next to these they call Ogygian, and the last are the Homoloidan; it seemed to me that the name of these gates was the newest, and the Ogygian the oldest. They say the Homoloidan gates were named for the following reason.
When they were defeated in battle by the Argives near Glisas, then the majority of them fled together with Laodamas, the son of Eteocles; of these, one part shrank from the journey to the Illyrians, but turning to the Thessalians, they occupied Homole, which is the most fertile of the Thessalian mountains and well-watered. When Thersander, the son of Polynices, recalled them to their homes, they named the gates through which they made their return after Homole, calling them the Homoloidan.
For one coming from Plataea, the entrance into Thebes is by the gates of Electra, and here they say Capaneus, the son of Hipponous, making his assaults against the wall with great violence, was struck by lightning.
