Regarding the punishment of Amphion, there are verses in the epic poem Minyad, and they relate in common to Amphion and Thamyris the Thracian.
But when, of the house of Amphion and Zethus, the pestilential disease laid the former waste, and as for Zethus, his wife killed his child through some mistake, and Zethus himself also died of grief, in this way the Thebans brought back Laius to hold the kingship.
While Laius was ruling and had Jocasta as his wife, an oracle came from Delphi that his death would be brought about by his child, if Jocasta should bear any.
And he, on this account, exposed Oedipus; but he, when he grew up, was destined to kill his father, and he married his mother.
But I do not think that children were born to him from her, using Homer as a witness, who wrote in the Odyssey: "And I saw the mother of Oedipus, fair Epicaste, who did a great deed in her ignorance of mind, marrying her own son; and he, having slain his father, married her; but immediately the gods made these things known to men.
"
πῶς οὖν ἐποίησαν ἀνάπυστα ἄφαρ, εἰ δὴ τέσσαρες ἐκ τῆς Ἐπικάστης ἐγένοντο παῖδες τῷ Οἰδίποδι;
"How then did they make them known immediately, if indeed four children were born to Oedipus from Epicaste?
But they were born from Eurygania, the daughter of Hyperphas.
This is also shown by the author of the epic verses called Oedipodea; and Onasias painted Eurygania at Plataea downcast because of the battle of her children.
And Polyneices, while Oedipus was still alive and ruling, withdrew from Thebes out of fear lest the curses of his father might be fulfilled upon them; and having arrived at Argos and married the daughter of Adrastus, he returned to Thebes, having been sent for by Eteocles after the death of Oedipus.
But having returned, he was led into disagreement with Eteocles, and thus fled for the second time; and having begged Adrastus to give him a force to bring him back, he lost his army and fought a duel himself against Eteocles in response to a challenge.
And those who fought the duel died, and when the kingship devolved upon Laodamas, the son of Eteocles, Creon, the son of Menoeceus, held power as guardian of the boy.
When Laodamas was already grown up and held the rule, they then led the army against Thebes for the second time; and when the Thebans also encamped opposite them near Glisas, when they came to blows, Laodamas killed Aegialeus, the son of Adrastus, but when the Argives won the battle, Laodamas withdrew to the Illyrians during the coming night with those of the Thebans who wished to follow.
And the Argives, having taken Thebes, delivered it to Thersander, the son of Polyneices.
But when, for those sailing with Agamemnon to Troy, the mistake of the voyage occurred and the blow at Mysia, there also it befell Thersander to die by Telephus, having become the bravest of the Greeks in the battle; and for one traveling to the plain of Caicus, his monument is in the city of Elaea, the stone in the open air of the marketplace; and the locals say that they offer sacrifices to him.
When Thersander died, and a fleet was being gathered for the second time against Alexander and against Ilium, they chose Peneleos as leader, because Tisamenus, the son of Thersander, was not yet of age; and when Peneleos died by Eurypylus, the son of Telephus, they chose Tisamenus as king, since he was the son of Thersander and Demonassa, the daughter of Amphiaraus.
But the wrath of the Furies of Laius and Oedipus did not fall upon Tisamenus, but upon Autesion, the son of Tisamenus, so that he migrated to the Dorians in accordance with the oracle of the god.
And when Autesion had departed, they thus chose Damasichthon, the son of Opheltes, the son of Peneleos, as king.
And of this Damasichthon, Ptolemaeus was the son, and of him, Xanthus, whom Andropompus killed in a duel by deceit and not with justice.
From that time, it seemed better to the Thebans to be governed by the majority and not to have all things depend on one man.
