At that time, indeed, matters proceeded thus far; but the most impious of all outrages—to betray one's homeland and fellow citizens for private gain—was destined to be the beginning of evils for the Achaeans too, an evil which has never at any time left Greece.
For indeed, during the reign of Darius, the son of Hystaspes, over the Persians, the affairs of the Ionians were ruined because the Samians, except for eleven of their trierarchs, betrayed the Ionian fleet; and after the Ionians had been subjugated, the Medes also enslaved Eretria, and Philagrus, the son of Cyneas, and Euphorbus, the son of Alcimachus, who were in the highest esteem in Eretria, became traitors.
When Xerxes marched against Greece, Thessaly was betrayed through Aleuadas, and Attaginus and Timegenidas, who held the first rank in Thebes, betrayed Thebes.
When the Peloponnesians and the Athenians were at war, Xenias of Elis attempted to betray Elis to the Lacedaemonians and Agis, and those who were called the guest-friends of Lysander never ceased at any time to hand over their own homelands to Lysander.
During the reign of Philip, the son of Amyntas, one would find that Sparta was the only city among the Greeks that was not betrayed; but the other cities in Greece were ruined by treachery rather than by the former pestilence.
To Alexander, the son of Philip, his good fortune granted that he had need of traitors only in small matters and not worthy of mention.
But when the disaster at Lamia befell the Greeks, Antipater, because he was making haste to cross over for the war in Asia, wished to conclude peace quickly, and it made no difference to him if he should leave Athens free and release the whole of Greece; but Demades and all the other traitors in Athens persuaded Antipater not to entertain any benevolent thoughts toward the Greeks, and by terrifying the Athenian populace, they became the cause of Macedonian garrisons being introduced into Athens and most of the other cities.
And this also confirms my statement; for the Athenians, after the misfortune in Boeotia, did not become subject to Philip, even though two thousand of them had been captured in the action, when they were defeated, and a thousand had been slain; but at Lamia, although only about two hundred fell and no more, they were enslaved to the Macedonians.
Thus, those who were diseased with treachery never failed Greece; and for the Achaeans, Callicrates, an Achaean man, at that time made them completely subject to the Romans.
And the beginning of evils for them was Perseus and the Macedonian empire, which was overthrown by the Romans.
Perseus, the son of Philip, though keeping peace with the Romans according to the treaty which his father Philip had made, took it into his mind to violate the oaths, and having led an army against the Sapaeans and Abrupolis, the king of the Sapaeans, he drove them from their land, though they were allies of the Romans; of these Sapaeans Archilochus also made mention in an iambic poem.
