In Elis, the things worthy of mention are an ancient gymnasium; and all those things which they customarily do for the athletes before they arrive in Olympia, it is established for them to perform in this gymnasium.
Tall plane-trees grow along the tracks inside the wall; and this whole enclosure is called Xystus, because it was a habit for Heracles, the son of Amphitryon, for his exercise, to scrape away all the thorns that grew here every day.
On one side indeed, there is a separate track set apart for the competition of the runners, and it is called by the locals "Sacred"; on another side is where runners and pentathletes run for practice.
In the gymnasium there is also a place called Plethrium; there the Hellanodikai match those of the same age, or those who compete in the same pursuit; and they match them for wrestling.
There are also altars of gods in the gymnasium: of Idaean Heracles, surnamed Parastates, and of Eros, and of the god whom the Eleans—and the Athenians, just like the Eleans—name Anteros, and of Demeter and her daughter.
But for Achilles there is no altar, but there is a cenotaph for him in accordance with an oracle; when the festival begins, on a stated day, around the time when the course of the sun inclines to the west, the Elean women perform other rites in honor of Achilles, and it is their custom to beat their breasts in mourning for him.
There is also another, smaller enclosure of the gymnasium, which is adjacent to the larger one, and they call it the "Square" from its shape; palaestras are made there for those who train, and there they match the athletes, no longer for wrestling, but to compete in blows with softer leather-straps.
There is also dedicated one of the two statues which were made for Zeus from the fines imposed upon Sosander of Smyrna and Polyctor of Elis.
There is also a third enclosure of the gymnasium, called Maltho from the softness of the ground, and it is set apart for the ephebes during the whole time of the festival.
In a corner of Maltho there is a bust of Heracles as far as the shoulders, and in one of the palaestras is a relief representing Eros and the so-called Anteros; Eros has a branch of palm, while Anteros is trying to take the palm away from him.
On either side of the entrance to Maltho stands a statue of a boxer lad; and the guardian of the laws of the Eleans said that he was by birth an Alexandrian from the region beyond the island of Pharos, Serapion by name, and that he, arriving in Elis when they were in want of corn, gave them food.
In return for this, these honors were granted to him here; the time of his crown at Olympia and of his benefaction to the Eleans was the two hundred and seventeenth Olympiad.
In this gymnasium there is also a council-chamber for the Eleans, and exhibitions of extempore speeches and writings of all kinds are made there; and it is called Lalichmion, named after the one who dedicated it.
Around it are hung shields, made for show and not for actual warfare.
For one going from the gymnasium to the baths, the way lies through the street called Silence and past the sanctuary of Artemis Philomeirax.
The goddess indeed received her surname because she is a neighbor of the gymnasium; and they say that the name Silence was given to the street for the following reason.
Men sent out from the army of Oxylus to spy on those in Elis, having exhorted one another on the road that, when they came near the wall, they themselves should make no more sound, but listen if they could hear anything from those inside, entered the city unobserved by this street, and having heard all they wished, returned again to the Aetolians; and the street received its name from the silence of the spies.
