Pausanias · Description of Greece §4.27.1-4.27.11

Founding of Messene by Epaminondas

Passage 170 of 465 · Greek

Summary

The cause of the hostility between the Messenians and the Dioscuri is narrated, and Epaminondas proceeds with the founding of Messene based on the oracles of Bacis and favorable sacrifices. Rebuilt after 287 years of exile, the history of the Messenians is contrasted with other displaced peoples, praising their preservation of their Doric dialect and customs through 300 years of wandering.

The wrath of the sons of Tyndareus against the Messenians began indeed before the battle in Stenyclerus, and I conjecture that it arose for a reason such as this.
Two beautiful youths from Andania, Panormus and Gonippus, were close friends in other respects, and they used to make joint excursions into battle and raids into Laconia.
Once, when the Lacedaemonians were celebrating a festival of the Dioscuri in camp and were already turned to drinking and play after their midday meal, Gonippus and Panormus, having put on white tunics and purple cloaks, and riding upon the most beautiful horses, with felt caps on their heads and spears in their hands, appeared to the Lacedaemonians.
And they, when they saw them, prostrated themselves and prayed, thinking that the Dioscuri themselves had come to their sacrifice.
Once the young men had mingled with them, they rode through them all, striking with their spears, and when many already lay dead, they withdrew to Andania, having insulted the sacrifice of the Dioscuri.
This, in my opinion, drove the Dioscuri to their hatred of the Messenians; but at that time, as the dream showed to Epaminondas, the return of the Messenians was no longer against the will of the Dioscuri.
It was especially the oracles of Bacis that urged Epaminondas to the founding.
For to Bacis, inspired by the Nymphs, there are prophecies concerning others of the Greeks and also concerning the return of the Messenians: "And then indeed from Sparta its bright flower shall perish, But Messene shall again be inhabited for all days." And I discovered that Bacis had also spoken concerning Eira, in what manner it would be captured; and this also of his oracles refers to it: "And those from Messene, subdued by clash and springs." When the ritual was discovered by them, those who were of the family of the priests committed it to books; and Epaminondas, since the place where the Messenians now have their city seemed to him most suitable for a settlement, ordered the seers to examine whether the will of the gods would also favor them here.
And since these also declared that the sacrifices were favorable, he thus made preparations for the settlement, ordering stones to be brought and summoning men whose trade was to cut streets, build houses and temples, and throw walls around them.
When all things were in readiness, thereafter—for the Arcadians provided the victims—Epaminondas himself and the Thebans sacrificed to Dionysus and Apollo Ismenius in the customary manner, the Argives to Argive Hera and Nemean Zeus, the Messenians to Zeus Ithomatas and the Dioscuri, and their priests to the Great Goddesses and Caucon.
And they jointly invoked their heroes to return to dwell with them, especially Messene the daughter of Triopas, and after her Eurytus and Aphareus and his sons, and from the Heracleidae Cresphontes and Aepytus; but the greatest invocation from all was made to Aristomenes.
And on that day indeed they were occupied with sacrifices and prayers, but on the following days they raised the circuit of the wall and built houses and temples within.
And they worked to no other music than that of Boeotian and Argive flutes; and the melodies of Sacadas and Pronomus were then indeed brought especially into competition.
To the city itself they gave the name Messene, and they also rebuilt other small towns.
But they did not remove the Nauplians from Mothone; and they allowed the Asinaeans also to remain in their place, remembering a benefit to these, because they had been unwilling to wage war with the Lacedaemonians against them, while the Nauplians, when the Messenians were returning to the Peloponnese, brought them such gifts as they had, and at the same time employed constant prayers to the deity for their return and entreaties to them for their own preservation.
The Messenians returned to the Peloponnese and recovered their own land two hundred and eighty-seven years after the capture of Eira, when Dyscinetus was archon at Athens, in the third year of the hundred and second Olympiad, which Damon of Thurii won for the second time.
Indeed, the time was not short also for the Plataeans, during which they also were exiled from their own land, nor for the Delians, when they inhabited Adramyttium, having been expelled from their own by the Athenians.
And the Minyans, having been driven out of Orchomenos by the Thebans after the battle at Leuctra, were restored to Boeotia by Philip the son of Amyntas, both these and the Plataeans.
And when Alexander desolated the city of the Thebans themselves, again not many years later Cassander the son of Antipater founded Thebes.
Indeed, the Plataean exile appears to have occurred for the longest time of those enumerated, yet even this did not extend beyond two generations.
But the Messenians wandered outside the Peloponnese for about three hundred years, during which they clearly neither abandoned any of their native customs nor were they untaught their Doric dialect, but even to our day they preserved its accuracy best of all the Peloponnesians.

Notes

  1. 4.27.3ἐμοὶ δοκεῖν — A parenthetical absolute infinitive used to qualify the whole statement, meaning 'in my opinion' or 'as it seems to me.'
  2. 4.27.4μανέντι ἐκ Νυμφῶν — μανέντι is the aorist passive participle dative of μαίνομαι, agreeing with Βάκιδι. The prepositional phrase ἐκ Νυμφῶν indicates the agent of the passive action ('by the Nymphs'), a usage of ἐκ representing ὑπό common in later Greek.
  3. 4.27.8τούτοις μὲν καὶ εὐεργεσίαν ἀπομνημονεύοντες — The present participle ἀπομνημονεύοντες (remembering) expresses the cause or attendant circumstance of the main verb εἴων (they allowed). The dative τούτοις functions as the indirect object of the action, meaning 'mindful of a benefit toward them.'
