§3.16.1πλησίον δὲ Ἱλαείρας καὶ Φοίβης ἐστὶν ἱερόν· ὁ δὲ ποιήσας τὰ ἔπη τὰ Κύπρια θυγατέρας αὐτὰς Ἀπόλλωνός φησιν εἶναι.
Near it is the sanctuary of Hilaeira and Phoebe; and the author of the epic poem "Cypria" says that they are the daughters of Apollo.
κόραι δὲ ἱερῶνταί σφισι παρθένοι, καλούμεναι κατὰ ταὐτὰ ταῖς θεαῖς καὶ αὗται Λευκιππίδες.
Maidens serve them as priestesses, who are themselves also called Leucippides, just like the goddesses.
τὸ μὲν δὴ ἕτερον τῶν ἀγαλμάτων ἱερασαμένη τις ταῖς θεαῖς Λευκιππὶς ἐπεκόσμησε, πρόσωπον ἀντὶ τοῦ ἀρχαίου ποιησαμένη τῆς ἐφʼ ἡμῶν τέχνης τὸ δὲ ἕτερον μὴ καὶ τοῦτο ἐπικοσμεῖν αὐτὴν ἀπεῖπεν ὄνειρον.
Indeed, one of the two statues, a certain Leucippis who had served as a priestess to the goddesses, adorned, having made a face of the art of our time instead of the ancient one; but a dream forbade her to adorn this other one as well.
ἐνταῦθα ἀπήρτηται ᾠὸν τοῦ ὀρόφου κατειλημένον ταινίαις· εἶναι δέ φασιν ᾠὸν ἐκεῖνο ὃ τεκεῖν Λήδαν ἔχει λόγος.
Here an egg is suspended from the roof, wrapped in ribbons; and they say that it is that egg which, as the story goes, Leda brought forth.
§3.16.2ὑφαίνουσι δὲ κατὰ ἔτος αἱ γυναῖκες τῷ Ἀπόλλωνι χιτῶνα τῷ ἐν Ἀμύκλαις, καὶ τὸ οἴκημα ἔνθα ὑφαίνουσι Χιτῶνα ὀνομάζουσιν.
And every year the women weave a tunic for Apollo at Amyclae, and they call the building where they weave "Chiton".
οἰκία δὲ αὐτοῦ πεποίηται πλησίον· τὸ δὲ ἐξ ἀρχῆς φασιν αὐτὴν οἰκῆσαι τοὺς Τυνδάρεω παῖδας, χρόνῳ δὲ ὕστερον ἐκτήσατο Φορμίων Σπαρτιάτης.
And a house is built near it; and they say that originally the sons of Tyndareus inhabited it, but in later times Phormion, a Spartan, acquired it.
παρὰ τοῦτον ἀφίκοντο οἱ Διόσκουροι ξένοις ἀνδράσιν ἐοικότες· ἥκειν δὲ ἐκ Κυρήνης φήσαντες καταχθῆναί τε ἠξίουν παρʼ αὐτῷ καὶ οἴκημα ᾐτοῦντο ᾧ μάλιστα ἔχαιρον, ἡνίκα μετὰ ἀνθρώπων ἦσαν.
To him came the Dioscuri, resembling foreign men; and saying that they had come from Cyrene, they asked to be lodged with him, and requested the room in which they used to delight most when they were among men.
§3.16.3ὁ δὲ οἰκίας μὲν τῆς ἄλλης ἐκέλευεν αὐτοὺς ἔνθα ἂν ἐθέλωσιν οἰκῆσαι, τὸ δὲ οἴκημα οὐκ ἔφη δώσειν· θυγάτηρ γὰρ ἔτυχέν οἱ παρθένος ἔχουσα ἐν αὐτῷ δίαιταν.
But he told them to dwell in any other part of the house they wished, but said he would not give that room; for it happened that his maiden daughter had her lodging in it.
ἐς δὲ τὴν ὑστεραίαν παρθένος μὲν ἐκείνη καὶ θεραπεία πᾶσα ἡ περὶ τὴν παῖδα ἠφάνιστο, Διοσκούρων δὲ ἀγάλματα ἐν τῷ οἰκήματι εὑρέθη καὶ τράπεζά τε καὶ σίλφιον ἐπʼ αὐτῇ.
And on the next day, that maiden and all the attendance about the girl had vanished, and statues of the Dioscuri were found in the room, along with a table and silphium upon it.
§3.16.4τάδε μὲν οὕτω γενέσθαι λέγουσιν·
These things indeed they say happened in this way.
ἰόντι δὲ ὡς ἐπὶ τὰς πύλας ἀπὸ τοῦ Χιτῶνος Χίλωνός ἐστιν ἡρῷον τοῦ σοφοῦ νομιζομένου καὶ Ἀθηνοδώρου τῶν ὁμοῦ Δωριεῖ τῷ Ἀναξανδρίδου σταλέντων ἐς Σικελίαν· ἐστάλησαν δὲ τὴν Ἐρυκίνην χώραν νομίζοντες τῶν ἀπογόνων τῶν Ἡρακλέους εἶναι καὶ οὐ βαρβάρων τῶν ἐχόντων.
And to one going from the "Chiton" as if toward the gates, there is the hero-shrine of Chilon, who is considered wise, and of Athenodorus, one of those who were sent to Sicily together with Dorieus, the son of Anaxandrides; and they were sent because they believed that the territory of Eryx belonged to the descendants of Heracles, and not to the barbarians who possessed it.
Ἡρακλέα γὰρ ἔχει λόγος παλαῖσαι πρὸς Ἔρυκα ἐπὶ τοῖσδε εἰρημένοις, ἢν μὲν Ἡρακλῆς νικήσῃ, γῆν τὴν Ἔρυκος Ἡρακλέους εἶναι, κρατηθέντος δὲ τῇ πάλῃ βοῦς τὰς Γηρυόνου— §3.16.5ταύτας γὰρ τότε ἤλαυνεν Ἡρακλῆς, διανηξαμένας δὲ ἐπὶ Σικελίαν κατὰ τὸν ἔλαιον τὸν κυφὸν ἀνευρήσων ἐπιδιέβη—τὰς οὖν βοῦς ἔδει κρατηθέντος Ἡρακλέους τὸν Ἔρυκα ἄγοντα οἴχεσθαι.
For there is a story that Heracles wrestled with Eryx on these agreed terms: if Heracles won, the land of Eryx should belong to Heracles; but if he were defeated in the wrestling, the cattle of Geryon— for Heracles was driving these at that time, and when they swam across to Sicily, he crossed over after them in order to find them at the Crooked Olive—these cattle, then, if Heracles were defeated, Eryx was to drive off and depart with them.
τὸ δὲ εὐμενὲς ἐκ τῶν θεῶν οὐ κατὰ ταὐτὰ Ἡρακλεῖ καὶ ὕστερον Δωριεῖ τῷ Ἀναξανδρίδου παρεγένετο, ἀλλὰ Ἡρακλῆς μὲν ἀποκτίννυσιν Ἔρυκα, Δωριέα δὲ αὐτόν τε καὶ τῆς στρατιᾶς διέφθειραν τὸ πολὺ Ἐγεσταῖοι.
But the favor from the gods did not attend Heracles and, in later times, Dorieus, the son of Anaxandrides, in the same way; for Heracles killed Eryx, but the Egestaeans destroyed Dorieus himself and the greater part of his army.
