The land of the Locrians called Ozolian is adjacent to Phocis at Cirrha.
As to the surname of these Locrians, I have heard various accounts, and I will set them all down alike.
To Orestheus, the son of Deucalion, who ruled in the country, a dog gave birth to a piece of wood instead of a puppy; and they say that when Orestheus buried the wood, at the coming of spring a vine grew from it, and from the shoots of the wood the people got their name.
Others believe that Nessus, who ferried over the Evenus, was wounded indeed by Heracles, but did not die immediately, and fled to this land, and that when he died, he rotted without burial, imparting a foul smell to the air of the place.
As to the third and fourth stories, one says that the vapor of a certain river and its very water are of a strange nature, while the other says that asphodel grows there in abundance and when in flower causes the smell.
It is also said that the first people here were indigenous, and not yet knowing how to weave garments, they made untanned skins of wild beasts their shelter against the cold, turning the hairy side of the skins outward for the sake of decency; consequently their own skin was bound to become foul-smelling like the hides.
At a distance of a hundred and twenty stades from Delphi is Amphissa, the largest and most famous city of the Locrians.
They class themselves with the Aetolians, being ashamed of the name of the Ozolians; and indeed there is a plausible reason for this, that when the Roman emperor forced the Aetolians to migrate for the resettlement of Nicopolis, the greater part of the people withdrew to Amphissa.
However, they are originally of the Locrian race; and they say that the name was given to the city after Amphissa, the daughter of Macar, son of Aeolus, and that Apollo became the lover of Amphissa.
The city is adorned with other buildings, and those most worthy of mention are the tomb of Amphissa and that of Andraemon; and they say that with Andraemon was buried also Gorge, the daughter of Oeneus, who had lived with Andraemon as his wife.
In the acropolis there is a temple of Athena, and a standing image made of bronze, which they say was brought by Thoas from Ilium and was part of the spoils from Troy; but indeed they did not convince me.
I have shown in the earlier parts of my narrative that the Samians, Rhoecus, the son of Philaeus, and Theodorus, the son of Telecles, were those who discovered how to melt bronze to the greatest accuracy; and they were the first to cast metal.
Of Theodorus, indeed, I know of nothing more that I have found, at least of those things made of bronze; but in the temple of Artemis of Ephesus, as you go toward the chamber containing the paintings, there is a stone coping above the altar of Artemis called Protothronia; and upon this coping, besides other images, stands an image of a woman near the end, the work of Rhoecus, which the Ephesians call Night.
This image, therefore, of Athena in Amphissa can be seen to be older and ruder in its workmanship.
The Amphissians also celebrate a festival of those called the Anakes Children; but who among the gods these Anakes Children are, is not agreed upon alike, but some say they are the Dioscuri, others the Curetes, while those who think they know something more say they are the Cabiri.
