§1.10.1Λυσιμάχῳ δὲ ἐπὶ μὲν Ἀριδαίου βασιλεύοντος καὶ ὕστερον Κασσάνδρου καὶ τῶν παίδων φιλία διέμεινε πρὸς Μακεδόνας· περιελθούσης δὲ ἐς Δημήτριον τὸν Ἀντιγόνου τῆς ἀρχῆς, ἐνταῦθα ἤδη Λυσίμαχος πολεμήσεσθαι ἤλπιζεν ὑπὸ Δημητρίου καὶ αὐτὸς ἄρχειν ἠξίου πολέμου, πατρῷον ἐπιστάμενος ὂν Δημητρίῳ προσπεριβάλλεσθαί τι ἐθέλειν καὶ ἅμα ὁρῶν αὐτὸν παρελθόντα ἐς Μακεδονίαν μετάπεμπτον ὑπὸ Ἀλεξάνδρου τοῦ Κασσάνδρου, ὡς δὲ ἀφίκετο, αὐτόν τε Ἀλέξανδρον φονεύσαντα καὶ ἔχοντα ἀντʼ ἐκείνου τὴν Μακεδόνων ἀρχήν.
For Lysimachus, friendship with the Macedonians continued during the reign of Aridaeus, and later of Cassander and his sons; but when the rule devolved upon Demetrius, the son of Antigonus, then at last Lysimachus expected to be attacked in war by Demetrius, and deemed it right himself to begin the war, knowing that it was a paternal trait in Demetrius to wish to acquire additional territory, and at the same time seeing that he had entered Macedonia, having been sent for by Alexander the son of Cassander, but when he arrived, he murdered Alexander himself and held the rule over the Macedonians in his stead.
§1.10.2τούτων ἕνεκα Δημητρίῳ συμβαλὼν πρὸς Ἀμφιπόλει παρʼ ὀλίγον μὲν ἦλθεν ἐκπεσεῖν Θρᾴκης, ἀμύναντος δέ οἱ Πύρρου τήν τε Θρᾴκην κατέσχε καὶ ὕστερον ἐπῆρξε Νεστίων καὶ Μακεδόνων·
For these reasons, having clashed with Demetrius near Amphipolis, he came within a little of being driven out of Thrace; but as Pyrrhus came to his aid, he held Thrace and later ruled over the Nestians and Macedonians.
τὸ δὲ πολὺ Μακεδονίας αὐτὸς Πύρρος κατεῖχε, δυνάμει τε ἥκων ἐξ Ἠπείρου καὶ πρὸς Λυσίμαχον ἐν τῷ παρόντι ἔχων ἐπιτηδείως.
However, Pyrrhus himself held most of Macedonia, having come with a force from Epirus and being at present on friendly terms with Lysimachus.
Δημητρίου δὲ διαβάντος ἐς τὴν Ἀσίαν καὶ Σελεύκῳ πολεμοῦντος, ὅσον μὲν χρόνον ἀντεῖχε τὰ Δημητρίου, διέμεινεν ἡ Πύρρου καὶ Λυσιμάχου συμμαχία· γενομένου δὲ ἐπὶ Σελεύκῳ Δημητρίου Λυσιμάχῳ καὶ Πύρρῳ διελύθη ἡ φιλία, καὶ καταστάντων ἐς πόλεμον Λυσίμαχος Ἀντιγόνῳ τε τῷ Δημητρίου καὶ αὐτῷ Πύρρῳ πολεμήσας ἐκράτησε παρὰ πολὺ καὶ Μακεδονίαν ἔσχεν, ἀναχωρῆσαι Πύρρον βιασάμενος ἐς τὴν Ἤπειρον.
When Demetrius crossed into Asia and was at war with Seleucus, as long as the affairs of Demetrius held out, the alliance of Pyrrhus and Lysimachus continued; but when Demetrius fell into the power of Seleucus, the friendship between Lysimachus and Pyrrhus was dissolved, and having entered into war, Lysimachus, by fighting against Antigonus the son of Demetrius and Pyrrhus himself, prevailed by far and held Macedonia, forcing Pyrrhus to retreat to Epirus.
§1.10.3εἰώθασι δὲ ἀνθρώποις φύεσθαι διʼ ἔρωτα πολλαὶ συμφοραί.
Many disasters are accustomed to arise for humans because of love.
Λυσίμαχος γὰρ ἡλικίᾳ τε ἤδη προήκων καὶ ἐς τοὺς παῖδας αὐτός τε νομιζόμενος εὐδαίμων καὶ Ἀγαθοκλεῖ παίδων ὄντων ἐκ Λυσάνδρας Ἀρσινόην ἔγημεν ἀδελφὴν Λυσάνδρας.
For Lysimachus, though already advanced in age, and deemed happy himself in regard to his children, and though Agathocles had children by Lysandra, married Arsinoe, the sister of Lysandra.
ταύτην τὴν Ἀρσινόην φοβουμένην ἐπὶ τοῖς παισί, μὴ Λυσιμάχου τελευτήσαντος ἐπʼ Ἀγαθοκλεῖ γένωνται, τούτων ἕνεκα Ἀγαθοκλεῖ ἐπιβουλεῦσαι λέγεται.
This Arsinoe, fearing for her children, lest on the death of Lysimachus they should fall into the power of Agathocles, for these reasons is said to have plotted against Agathocles.
ἤδη δὲ ἔγραψαν καὶ ὡς Ἀγαθοκλέους ἀφίκοιτο ἐς ἔρωτα ἡ Ἀρσινόη, ἀποτυγχάνουσα δὲ †ἐπὶ τῷ βουλεῦσαι λέγουσιν Ἀγαθοκλεῖ θάνατον.
Some indeed have already written that Arsinoe fell in love with Agathocles, and being unsuccessful, she plotted the death of Agathocles.
λέγουσι δὲ καὶ ὡς Λυσίμαχος αἴσθοιτο ὕστερον τὰ τολμηθέντα ὑπὸ τῆς γυναικός, εἶναι δὲ οὐδὲν ἔτι οἱ πλέον ἠρημωμένῳ φίλων ἐς τὸ ἔσχατον.
They also say that Lysimachus later realized the bold deeds attempted by his wife, but that there was no longer any advantage for him, since he was utterly destitute of friends.
§1.10.4ὡς γὰρ δὴ τότε ὁ Λυσίμαχος ἀνελεῖν τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα Ἀρσινόῃ παρῆκε, Λυσάνδρα παρὰ Σέλευκον ἐκδιδράσκει τούς τε παῖδας ἅμα ἀγομένη καὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς τοὺς αὑτῆς, †οἷ περιελθὸν τοῦτο ἐς Πτολεμαῖον καταφεύγουσι. τούτοις ἐκδιδράσκουσι παρὰ Σέλευκον καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος ἠκολούθησεν, υἱὸς μὲν Λυσιμάχου, γεγονὼς δὲ ἐξ Ὀδρυσιάδος γυναικός.
For when at that time Lysimachus permitted Arsinoe to do away with Agathocles, Lysandra fled to Seleucus, taking with her both her children and her own brothers, †who, since this matter had devolved upon Ptolemy, fled for refuge.† Along with these fleeing to Seleucus went also Alexander, a son of Lysimachus, born of an Odrysian woman.
οὗτοί τε οὖν ἐς Βαβυλῶνα ἀναβεβηκότες ἱκέτευον Σέλευκον ἐς πόλεμον πρὸς Λυσίμαχον καταστῆναι· καὶ Φιλέταιρος ἅμα, ᾧ τὰ χρήματα ἐπετέτραπτο Λυσιμάχου, τῇ τε Ἀγαθοκλέους τελευτῇ χαλεπῶς φέρων καὶ τὰ παρὰ τῆς Ἀρσινόης ὕποπτα ἡγούμενος καταλαμβάνει Πέργαμον τὴν ὑπὲρ Καΐκου, πέμψας δὲ κήρυκα τά τε χρήματα καὶ αὑτὸν ἐδίδου Σελεύκῳ.
These, having gone up to Babylon, implored Seleucus to enter into war against Lysimachus; and at the same time Philetaerus, to whom the treasures of Lysimachus had been entrusted, taking the death of Agathocles hard and holding the actions of Arsinoe in suspicion, occupied Pergamon above the Caicus, and having sent a herald, offered both the treasures and himself to Seleucus.
§1.10.5Λυσίμαχος δὲ ταῦτα πάντα πυνθανόμενος ἔφθη διαβὰς ἐς τὴν Ἀσίαν καὶ ἄρξας αὐτὸς πολέμου συμβαλών τε Σελεύκῳ παρὰ πολύ τε ἐκρατήθη καὶ αὐτὸς ἀπέθανεν.
But Lysimachus, hearing all these things, anticipated them by crossing into Asia and himself beginning the war, but having clashed with Seleucus, he was utterly defeated and died himself.
Ἀλέξανδρος δέ, ὃς ἐκ τῆς γυναικὸς Ὀδρυσίδος ἐγεγόνει οἱ, πολλὰ Λυσάνδραν παραιτησάμενος ἀναιρεῖταί τε καὶ ὕστερον τούτων ἐς Χερρόνησον κομίσας ἔθαψεν, ἔνθα ἔτι καὶ νῦν ἐστίν οἱ φανερὸς ὁ τάφος Καρδίας τε μεταξὺ κώμης καὶ Πακτύης.
But Alexander, who had been born to him of the Odrysian woman, having earnestly entreated Lysandra, carried off his body, and later brought it to the Chersonese and buried it, where even now his tomb is conspicuous between the village of Cardia and Pactye.
