§405ἠπείχθημεν ὥστʼ ἀνθʼ ἡμεροδρόμων ἐγενόμεθα.
We hastened [to Marathon] so that we even performed the role of day-runners.
ἆρʼ οὖν καλὸν ἢ τοὺς συσσώσαντας ἡμῖν τοὺς ἀρχηγέτας αὐτοῖς παισὶ καὶ γυναιξὶ νῦν ὑφʼ ἡμῶν ἀπολέσθαι, ἢ τοὺς τὴν πόλιν ἐκλιπόντας ὑπὲρ τῆς τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἐλευθερίας ὑφʼ ἡμῶν τῆς πόλεως στερηθῆναι, ἢ τοὺς ὑπὲρ τῆς ἐκείνων ἐλευθερίας τοῖς τυράννοις ὑμᾶς πολεμοῦντας, καὶ ταῦτα πρὶν ἃς εἶπον αὐτοὺς ἀρετὰς ἐπιδείξασθαι, τούτους νῦν πανωλεθρίᾳ τοὺς αὐτοὺς τούτους διαφθεῖραι;
Is it then noble either that those who saved [Greece] with us, the leaders, should now be destroyed by us together with their children and wives, or that those who abandoned their city for the sake of the freedom of the Greeks should be deprived of their city by us, or that those who fought the tyrants for their freedom (and that before they displayed those virtues which I mentioned) should now be destroyed in utter ruin, these very same men?
καὶ τοῖς μὲν τότε μηδίσασι γενέσθαι παρʼ ὑμῶν συγγνώμην, οὓς δεκατεύειν πρότερον ἐψηφίσασθε, καὶ τοὺς Ἀθηναίους οὐχ ἥκιστα εἶναι τοὺς ταῦτα συμπείθοντας, τοῖς δὲ μεθʼ ὑμῶν γενομένοις καὶ μεθʼ ὧν ἐν τοῖς κοινοῖς τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἱεροῖς τετάχθαι προσῆκε τὴν Ἑλλάδα ἐλευθεροῦντας, τούτοις ἐνταῦθα τελευτῆσαι τὴν τύχην;
And that while forgiveness was granted by you to those who medismed at that time, whom you previously voted to tithe—and the Athenians were not the least of those who helped to persuade this—the fortune of those who stood with you, and with whom it was fitting to be drawn up in the common sanctuaries of the Greeks to free Greece, should end here?
καὶ τοὺς μὲν ἐκ τῶν βαρβάρων περὶ τῆς βώλου καὶ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐλθόντας, ὡς συλῶντας τὰ τῆς Ἀθηνᾶς, οὕτως ὑπʼ ἐκείνων ἀποθανεῖν, καὶ δύο ταύτας πόλεις μόνας κοσμῆσαι τὸ τῶν Ἑλλήνων γένος ὅσοις ἐψηφίσαντο, τήν τε ἡμετέραν καὶ τὴν ἐκείνων· κατασκαπτομένης δὲ ἀκροπόλεως καὶ ἱερῶν καὶ τῆς πόλεως ἄρδην ἀπολλυμένης καὶ τῆς χώρας οὐκ οἶδʼ οἷστισιν ἀνθρώπων διδομένης, οὐδὲν τούτων ἄρα οἴεσθε οὔτε πρὸς τοὺς ἄλλους θεοὺς οὔτε πρὸς τὴν Ἀθηνᾶν εἶναι, ἣ κοινὴ μὲν ἀρχηγέτις ἀμφοῖν ταῖν πόλεοιν, τῆς δʼ ἐκείνων τὴν ἐπωνυμίαν ἔχει;
And that while the messengers of the barbarians who came for earth and water were put to death by them as robbing the things of Athena, and these two cities alone adorned the race of the Greeks by as many as they voted for, both ours and theirs; yet when the acropolis and temples are being razed and the city is being utterly destroyed and the land is being given to I know not what sort of men, do you think that none of these things concerns either the other gods or Athena, who is the common founder of both cities, and has the name of theirs?
μηδαμῶς, ὦ ἄνδρες Λακεδαιμόνιοι, μὴ τοὺς βαρβάρους μιμώμεθα, μηδʼ ἣν ἔρεισμα τῆς Ἑλλάδος πόλιν ᾔδομεν, ταύτην ἀνατρέψωμεν, μηδʼ ὑποσπάσωμεν, μηδʼ ἐκκόψωμεν τῆς Ἑλλάδος τοῖν ὀφθαλμοῖν τὸν ἕτερον, ἀλλʼ ἀναμνησθέντες ἐκείνης τῆς ἡμέρας ἐν ᾗ μὴ καταλιπεῖν τοὺς Ἕλληνας αὐτῶν δεομένοις ἡμῖν ὑπήκουσαν, παριδόντες μὲν τὰς τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπαγγελίας, καταφρονήσαντες δὲ κινδύνων καὶ φόβων, ἐν καιρῷ νῦν τὴν χάριν αὐτοῖς ἀπόδοτε, ἕν τι τῶν αἰσχίστων νομίσαντες, ἰδίᾳ μὲν εἴ τῳ μείζω τῶν ἐγκλημάτων εἴη τὰ τῆς ἀνδραγαθίας εἰδέναι συγγιγνώσκειν, πόλει δὲ τοσαύτῃ τὸ δίκαιον τοῦτο μὴ σωθῆναι.
By no means, Lacedaemonians, let us not imitate the barbarians, nor let us overturn the city which we used to sing of as the bulwark of Greece, nor let us drag it down, nor let us cut out one of the two eyes of Greece, but remembering that day on which they listened to us when we begged them not to abandon the Greeks, ignoring the promises of the King and despising dangers and fears, now in season return the favor to them, considering it one of the most shameful things, individually if anyone knows how to forgive when the deeds of bravery are greater than the accusations, and for so great a city that this justice should not be preserved.
φέρε πρὸς Διὸς, οὐδὲν γὰρ ἀπώμοτον, εἰ πάλιν ἐξ ἀρχῆς ὁ βάρβαρος ἡμῖν ἐγχειρήσειε, §406πάντα δʼ ἂν γένοιτο ἐν τῷ μακρῷ χρόνῳ, καὶ τὴν Ἑλλάδα ἴσμεν ὡς κεκάκωται, τίνας εἰπέ μοι παραστησώμεθα;
Come, by Zeus, for nothing is impossible, if the barbarian should attack us again from the beginning, and all things might happen in the long course of time, and we know how Greece has been ruined, tell me, whom shall we bring to our side?
πρὸς τίνας προτέρους ἀποστείλωμεν;
To whom shall we first send ambassadors?
τίσιν οἱ παρʼ ἡμῶν παρακλητικοὶ μᾶλλον καιρὸν ἕξουσιν;
For whom will our encouraging messengers have a better opportunity?
ἂν ἐμοὶ πείθησθε, φείσεσθε μὲν καὶ τῶν Ἀθηναίων, φείσεσθε δὲ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν πρότερον καὶ τῆς ἁπάσης Ἑλλάδος·
If you obey me, you will spare indeed the Athenians, and you will spare yourselves first and the whole of Greece.
καὶ τοὺς ἀγανακτοῦντας εἰκότως ἂν παραιτήσαισθε, ὑπομιμνήσκοντες καὶ κατὰ πόλεις ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐδένα κίνδυνον οὐδὲ ταλαιπωρίαν αὐτῶν ἕνεκα ὠκνήσαμεν καὶ ὅτι ὧν ἔχρῃζον ἔχουσι, Κορίνθιοι μὲν Ποτίδαιαν καὶ τὰς ἀποικίας, Αἰγινῆται δὲ τὴν αὑτῶν κομίσασθαι, Μεγαρεῖς δὲ ἀγοραῖς καὶ λιμέσι χρῆσθαι τοῖς Ἀθηναίων.
And you would reasonably appease those who are angry, reminding them city by city that we hesitated at no danger or suffering for their sake and that they have what they desired—the Corinthians to recover Potidaea and the colonies, the Aeginetans their own land, and the Megarians to use the markets and harbors of the Athenians.
καὶ μὴν καὶ Θηβαίοις γʼ ἱκανὴ χάρις τὰ συγχωρηθέντʼ ἐν ἀρχῇ περὶ Πλαταιέας·
Moreover, even for the Thebans, the concessions made in the beginning concerning Plataea are sufficient favor.
ταῦτα δὲ οὐκ εἰκὸς προσβιάζεσθαι αὐτοὺς, πολὺ μᾶλλον ὑμῖν εἶξαι, καὶ δοῦναι ταύτην εἰ μή ποτε Ἀθηναίοις, ἀλλʼ ὑμῖν τὴν χάριν μὴ σφῶν ἕνεκα ἐξαμαρτεῖν, μηδʼ ἀλιτηρίους τῆς τε θεοῦ καὶ τῶν Ἑλλήνων γενέσθαι.
It is not reasonable for them to force these things, but much more to yield to you, and to grant this favor, if never to the Athenians, yet to you, not to commit a sin for their own sake, nor to become accursed to the goddess and the Greeks.
ἄγος γὰρ τοῦτο πολὺ μᾶλλον ὧν αὐτοί ποτε ἠλαύνετε.
For this is a pollution far greater than those you once expelled.
κεφάλαιον δʼ εἰπὼν ἀπαλλάξομαι. εἰ μὲν ὁμοίων ἂν καὶ αὐτοὶ τῶν Ἀθηναίων κρατησάντων ἐτύχετε πανταχῆ, καλὸν ὡς λέγω πρᾶξαι· εἰ δὲ μὴ, νικήσωμεν αὐτοὺς ἀμφοτέροις, καὶ τοῖς ὅπλοις καὶ τῇ φιλανθρωπίᾳ.
I will say one main point and depart: if you yourselves would have met with similar treatment in all respects if the Athenians had conquered, it is well to do as I say; but if not, let us conquer them in both, both in weapons and in humanity.
