§311πάλιν ἀπεσώθην καὶ τίνʼ ἐφεξῆς δίαιταν διῃτώμην ἀνάγκη παραλιπεῖν διὰ πλῆθος τῶν τε λόγων καὶ τῶν πραγμάτων.
I was saved again, and I must omit what kind of regimen I followed next because of the multitude of words and deeds.
ἑτέραν δὲ ἔξοδον ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὕδατα ἐν ἀκμῇ θέρους, καὶ προείρητο ἐπανήκειν εὐθέως λουσάμενον, κιννάμωμον κόψαντα καὶ πάσαντα τὸν τράχηλον κύκλῳ.
I went out on another journey to the waters in the height of summer, and it had been directed that, after bathing, I should return immediately, having ground cinnamon and sprinkled it all around my neck.
τούτους αὖ σταδίους τετταράκοντα καὶ διακοσίους τὸ συναμφότερον ἤνυσα, πνίγους ὄντος θαυμαστοῦ, καὶ ῥᾷον ἤνεγκα τὸ δίψος ἤ τις ἂν ἐκ βαλανείου βαδίζων οἴκαδε.
I accomplished these two hundred and forty stades in all, though the heat was extraordinary, and I bore my thirst more easily than someone walking home from a bath.
αὖθις αὖ πέμπει με προστάξας πιεῖν ψυχρὸν, καὶ ἔπιον τὸ σύμπαν.
Again He sent me, commanding me to drink cold water, and I drank it all.
καὶ ταῦτα μὲν εἰς τοσοῦτον τὸ νῦν εἶναι.
So much for these matters for the present.
τὰ δʼ ἐν Λεβέδῳ συμβάντα, ἐπέμφθην μὲν ἀπὸ κατακλίσεως, ἣν ἐν Σωτήρων ἐγκατεκεκλίμην, αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦτο ἐπιτάξαντος, οὕτως ἀπειρηκὼς ὥστʼ οὐδʼ ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης οἴκοι εἶχον ἀνταρκεῖν.
As for what happened in Lebedos: I was sent away from the sacred incubation lying-in which I had undertaken in the temple of the Saviors, the god himself having ordered this too, when I was so exhausted that I could not even endure lying on my bed at home.
καὶ ἦν δὴ ὁ ἰατρὸς Σάτυρος ἐν Περγάμῳ κατὰ τοῦτον τὸν χρόνον σοφιστὴς, ὡς ἐλέγετο, οὐ τῶν ἀγεννῶν.
At that time, there was in Pergamum the physician Satyros, a sophist, as it was said, and not of the undistinguished sort.
οὗτος ἐμοὶ προσελθὼν κατακειμένῳ καὶ τοῦ τε θώρακος καὶ τῶν ὑποχονδρίων ἁψάμενος, ἐπειδὴ προϊόντος τοῦ λόγου τὰς καθάρσεις τοῦ αἵματος ἤκουσεν ὅσαι γεγόνασί μοι, τὸ μὲν αἷμα ἐπισχεῖν ἐκέλευε καὶ μὴ καταλύειν τὸ σῶμα·
This man came to me as I lay there, and touched my chest and my hypochondria, and when, as our conversation proceeded, he heard how many blood-purgings had occurred to me, he urged me to stop the bleeding and not to exhaust my body.
ἐγὼ δέ σοι, ἔφη, δώσω τι κατάπλασμα πάνυ κοῦφον καὶ ἁπλοῦν, ὃ συνθεῖναι ἐπὶ τοῦ στομάχου καὶ τῶν ὑποχονδρίων, καὶ εἴσει δὴ ὁπόσον τι ὀνήσει. ταῦτα συνεβούλευε, κἀγὼ τὸ μὲν τοῦ αἵματος οὐκ ἔφην εἶναι κύριος οὔτε οὕτως οὔτʼ ἐκείνως ποιεῖν, ἀλλʼ ἕως ἂν ὁ θεὸς προστάττῃ ἀφαιρεῖν, ὑπακούσεσθαι καὶ ἑκὼν καὶ ἄκων, μᾶλλον δὲ οὐδέποτε ἄκων·
"I will give you," he said, "a very light and simple plaster to apply to your stomach and hypochondria, and you will see how much it will help." He advised this, and I said that as for the blood, I was not its master to act either in this way or in that, but as long as the god commanded to draw it, I would obey both willingly and unwillingly, or rather, never unwillingly.
τὴν δόσιν δὲ οὐκ ἔφυγον τοῦ Σατύρου, ἀλλʼ ἐφύλαττον λαβών· τὸ δʼ ἦν ἄρα οὐκ Ἀμαλθείας κέρας.
Yet I did not reject Satyros' gift, but took and kept it; but this, as it turned out, was no horn of Amaltheia.
ὡς δʼ εἰς τὴν Λέβεδον κομίζομαι καὶ μάλʼ ἀπροσδοκήτως καὶ ἀγαπητῶς διαγενόμενος, τοῦτο μὲν ἤδη πᾶν ἐδόκει κέρδος εἶναι.
When I was carried to Lebedos and survived quite unexpectedly and to my great relief, this in itself already seemed to be entirely a gain.
ἐδεόμην δὲ συχνῆς τῆς βοηθείας, καὶ τοῖς ὕδασι μόλις τε καὶ πεφεισμένως ὡμίλουν.
But I stood in need of frequent help, and I resorted to the waters only with difficulty and sparingly.
ἔδοξεν οὖν μοι τὸ τοῦ Σατύρου φάρμακον θεῖναι κατὰ τοῦ στομάχου τε καὶ τοῦ στήθους, ὥσπερ ὁ Σάτυρος παρηγγέλκει· πάντως δὲ οὐδὲν μέγα ἐκβαίνειν τῆς θεραπείας τῆς παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ.
I decided, therefore, to apply Satyros' remedy to my stomach and chest, just as Satyros had instructed, thinking that in any case it would not depart much from the therapy of the god.
εὐθὺς μὲν οὖν οὐ προσεῖτό με ἡ πρώτη προσβολὴ, ἀλλʼ ἐδόκει ψυχρότερον εἶναι·
At once, then, the first application did not agree with me, but seemed to be rather too cold.
§312ὅμως δὲ ἔδοξέ μοι διακαρτερεῖν καὶ παρέχειν τῷ φαρμάκῳ, εἰ ἄρα ἀλλὰ τῷ χρόνῳ τι ἀνύσειε.
Nevertheless, I decided to persevere and yield to the remedy, to see if perhaps, in time, it might achieve something.
καὶ οὕτω δὴ τό τε στῆθος ψύχεται ψύξιν δεινὴν καὶ βὴξ ἐπιγίγνεται πυκνή τε καὶ ἰσχυρὰ, καὶ ἀπορίᾳ εἰχόμην, καὶ ὁ θεὸς σημαίνει φθόην εἶναι.
And so indeed my chest became dreadfully chilled, and a frequent and violent cough came on, and I was seized with distress, and the god indicated that it was consumption.
καὶ τῆς ἐπιούσης οἱ κρόταφοι καὶ ὁ κύκλος τοῦ προσώπου ἅπας κατετείνετο, καὶ σιαγόνες συνεκέκλειντο καὶ θόρυβος ἦν εἴπερ ποτέ.
And on the following day my temples and the whole circle of my face were convulsed, my jaws were locked, and there was trouble if ever there was.
ὡς δὲ ἐχάλασα μικρόν τι, ἐνθύμιον γίγνεταί μοι χρήσασθαι τῷ θεῷ τῷ ἐν Κολοφῶνι καὶ περὶ τῶν παρόντων καὶ περὶ πάσης τῆς ἀσθενείας.
When I relaxed a little, it occurred to me to consult the god in Colophon both about my present condition and about my illness as a whole.
ἀπέχει δὲ ἡ Κολοφὼν τῆς Λεβέδου οὐ πολὺ, καὶ ἡ νὺξ ἐτύγχανεν ἡ ἱερὰ ἐπικειμένη.
Colophon is not far from Lebedos, and the sacred night happened to be close at hand.
δόξαν ταῦτα, πέμπω τὸν Ζώσιμον.
These things having been decided, I sent Zosimus.
ἐπελθούσης δὲ τῆς νυκτὸς τῷ μὲν Ζωσίμῳ γίγνεται τόδε τὸ μαντεῖον φέρον εἰς ἐμὲ
ἰήσεταί σε νοῦσον ἠδʼ ἀκέσσεται
"Ἀσκληπιὸς, πόλισμα Τηλέφου κλυτὸν
τιμῶν, Καίκου ναμάτων οὐ τηλόθεν. "
ἐμοὶ δὲ τῆς αὐτῆς νυκτὸς τάδε ἐγίγνετο, ὡς κεφαλαίων ἀπομνημονεῦσαι. ἐδόκουν ἐπὶ τῆς πατρῴας ἑστίας εἶναι, ἐν δὲ τῷ τοίχῳ οὗ τὰ ἕδη τῶν θεῶν ἐπιγράμματα εἶναι τοιάδε· οἱ δεῖνες σωθέντες ἐκ τῶν ἐσχάτων θεοῖς πᾶσι χαριστήρια· καὶ ἐφαίνετο δὴ τῶν θυσιῶν ἴχνη.
When night came, Zosimus received this oracle referring to me: "Asclepius will heal your disease and cure you, honoring the famous city of Telephus, not far from the streams of Caicus." For myself, on the same night, to recall the main points, the following occurred: I seemed to be at my ancestral hearth, and on the wall where the shrines of the gods were, there were inscriptions such as: "So-and-so, having been saved from the extreme danger, give thanks to all the gods"; and indeed traces of sacrifices appeared.
καὶ ἐμοὶ μέν γε ἡ ὄψις αὕτη τῆς συνεχείας τῶν θυσιῶν ἦρξεν, οὐ μᾶλλόν τι πρὸς τὸ ὄναρ ἀφορῶντι, ἀλλʼ ἅμα μὲν τοιαῦτʼ ἦν τὰ γιγνόμενα ἐκ τῶν θεῶν, ἅμα δʼ ἡ γνώμη οὕτω κατεσκευάσθη.
And for me indeed, this vision began a continuous series of sacrifices, not so much because I looked to the dream, but at the same time such were the things that came from the gods, and at the same time my mind was so prepared.
ἐκ δʼ οὖν τῆς Λεβέδου μετʼ εὐθυμίας ἀνεχωρήσαμεν, ἡνίκα ἐδόκει τῷ θεῷ, καὶ ῥᾳστώνης ἀπέλαυσα λόγου ἀξίας.
So then we departed from Lebedos in good spirits, when it seemed best to the god, and I enjoyed a relief worthy of mention.
ὃ δʼ εἶπον περὶ τῆς φθόης, ἐπεσημήνατο ὕστερον πρὸς τὸν νεωκόρον ὁ θεὸς, ὡς αὐτὸς ἐμοὶ διηγεῖτο ὁ Ἀσκληπιακὸς, οὐδὲν παρʼ ἐμοῦ προακηκοώς·
As for what I said about the consumption, the god later indicated this to the temple-warden, as Asclepiacus himself related to me, having heard nothing from me beforehand.
ἔφη γὰρ ἀκοῦσαι τοῦ θεοῦ λέγοντος ὡς ἄρα φθόην μὲν καὶ κατάρρουν περιῃρηκὼς εἴη μου, τὸν δὲ στόμαχον ἰῷτο.
For he said he heard the god saying that he had indeed removed the consumption and catarrh from me, and was healing my stomach.
ἐν δὲ δὴ καὶ Νηρίτῳ τῶν τροφέων ἑνὶ τῶν ἐμῶν περὶ τὸν αὐτὸν μάλιστα χρόνον θαυμαστὰ οἷα ἐνεδείξατο.
And indeed, about the same time, the god showed wonderful signs to Neritus, one of my foster-fathers.
οἶμαι γὰρ δόξαι τὸν θεὸν αὐτῷ λέγειν ἅμα τῷ Τελεσφόρῳ γενόμενον, βλέποντα εἰς ἐμὲ, ὡς ἄρα τούτου τά τε ὀστᾶ δέοι ἐξελεῖν καὶ νεῦρα ἐνθεῖναι, τὰ γὰρ ὄντα ἀπειρηκέναι·
For I think it seemed to him that the god, appearing together with Telesphorus and looking at me, said that he must extract this man's bones and insert sinews, since the existing ones had failed.
καὶ αὐτὸν μὲν δὴ ἐν παντὶ εἶναι καὶ ἀγωνιᾶν, ταῦτα
And indeed, he was in a state of total panic and agony, these things...
