§301τούτου χρόνον δωρεὰν ἔσχον παρὰ τῶν θεῶν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἀνεβίων ὑπὸ τοῖς θεοῖς καί τις οἷον ἀντίδοσις αὕτη συνέβη.
I received the life-time of this person as a gift from the gods, and after this I lived my life again under the protection of the gods, and this occurred as a kind of exchange.
καὶ τὰ μὲν τῆς προρρήσεως τῆς περὶ τῶν ἐτῶν καὶ τῆς ὕστερον ἀσθενείας εἰς τοῦτο συμβάσης καὶ τῶν περὶ ταῦτα ἐπιφανειῶν οὕτως ἔσχεν.
And so stood the matters of the prediction concerning the years, and of the subsequent illness which contributed to this, and of the divine manifestations concerning these things.
ἁρμόττοι δʼ ἂν ἴσως περὶ τῶν λουτρῶν ἤδη λέγειν, οἷς διήγαγεν ἡμᾶς, ἐπειδὴ καὶ τὸ ἐξ ἀρχῆς ἅμα τῇ προρρήσει τὸ λουτρὸν ἐπέταξε τὸ ἐν τῷ ποταμῷ.
Perhaps it would now be fitting to speak of the baths, by which he guided us, since also from the very beginning, together with the prediction, he ordered the bath in the river.
ἦσαν οἱ κατάρροι καὶ ἡ περὶ τὴν ὑπερώαν ἀπορία καὶ πάντα πάχνης ἦν πλέα καὶ πυρὸς, καὶ ἡ τοῦ στομάχου κάκωσις ἤκμαζε καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ καὶ παντοῖα, καὶ κατεκεκλείμην θέρους ὥρᾳ.
There were catarrhs, and distress about the palate, and everything was full of frost and fire, and the affliction of my stomach was at its height, and many other things of all kinds, and I was shut in during the summer season.
καὶ ἐγίγνετο ταῦτα ἐν Περγάμῳ ἐν τῷ τοῦ νεωκόρου τοῦ Ἀσκληπιακοῦ.
And these things took place in Pergamum in the house of the temple warden of Asclepius.
πρῶτον μὲν οὖν ἐπέταξεν αἷμα ἀφελεῖν ἀπʼ ἀγκῶνος καὶ προσέθηκεν, ὅσα ἐγὼ μέμνημαι, λίτρας εἴκοσι καὶ ἑκατόν· τὸ δʼ ἦν ἄρα δηλοῦν ὡς οὐκ ὀλίγων δεήσοι τῶν φλεβοτομιῶν, ἐφάνη δʼ ἐκ τῶν ὕστερον.
First, then, he ordered to draw blood from the elbow, and added, as far as I remember, one hundred and twenty litrae; and this, as it turned out, was to show that there would be need of not a few bloodlettings, and this became clear from subsequent events.
οἵ τε γὰρ νεωκόροι ἐν τούτῳ ὄντες ἡλικίας καὶ πάντες οἱ περὶ τὸν θεὸν θεραπευταὶ καὶ τάξεις ἔχοντες ὡμολόγουν ἀεὶ δή ποτε μηδένα πω τῶν πάντων συνειδέναι τοσαῦτα τμηθέντα, πλήν γε Ἰσχύρωνος, εἶναι δʼ ἐν τοῖς παράδοξον τό γʼ ἐκείνου, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὣς ὑπερβάλλειν τὸ καθʼ ἡμᾶς ἄνευ τῶν ἄλλων παραδόξων, ἃ προσῆν ταῖς φλεβοτομίαις, οἷόν περ οὖν καὶ τότε εὐθέως συνέβη.
For both the temple wardens who were of this age, and all the attendants about the god and those holding offices, always agreed that they had never known anyone of all men to have been cut so much, except at least Ischyron, and that his case indeed was among the extraordinary, but even so, my case surpassed it, even without the other extraordinary circumstances which accompanied the bloodlettings, such as indeed happened immediately even then.
μιᾷ μὲν γὰρ, οἶμαι, ὕστερον ἡμέρᾳ ἢ δυοῖν γε ἐκέλευσε πάλιν ἐκ τοῦ μετώπου ἀφελεῖν, καί τινι τῶν ἐκ τῆς Ῥωμαίων βουλῆς παρεδρεύοντι καὶ αὐτῷ ταυτὸν τοῦτο ἐκέλευσεν, ἐπισημηνάμενος ὅτι καὶ Ἀριστείδῃ προστέτακται—Σηδᾶτος ὄνομα αὐτῷ, βέλτιστος ἀνδρῶν, ὃς ἐμοὶ ταῦτα αὐτὸς διηγεῖτο—ἐν μέσῳ δὲ τούτων τῶν φλεβοτομιῶν προστάττει μοι τὸ λουτρὸν τὸ ἐν τῷ Καΐκῳ, καὶ ἔδει τὰ ἔρια ἀπορρίψαντα ὁδοιπορεῖν καὶ λοῦσθαι· ὄψεσθαι δὲ καὶ ἵππον λούμενον καὶ τὸν νεωκόρον ἑστῶτα ἐπὶ τῆς ὄχθης τὸν Ἀσκληπιακόν.
For on one day, I think, or indeed two days later, he ordered to draw blood again from my forehead, and he ordered this same thing also for one of those from the Roman Senate who was staying there, having indicated that it had also been prescribed for Aristides—Sedatus was his name, the best of men, who told me these things himself—and in the midst of these bloodlettings, he prescribed for me the bath in the Caicus, and it was necessary to throw off my woolen blankets and journey and bathe; and he said that I would also see a horse bathing, and the temple warden of Asclepius standing on the bank.
ταῦτα προείρητο καὶ ταῦτα ἐγίγνετο.
These things had been predicted, and these things came to pass.
ἔτι μὲν προσιὼν τῷ ποταμῷ τὸν ἵππον ὁρῶ λούμενον.
While I was still approaching the river, I saw the horse bathing.
λουμένου δέ μου παρῆν ὁ νεωκόρος καὶ ἑστὼς ἐπὶ τῆς ὄχθης ἑώρα.
And while I was bathing, the temple warden was present and watched, standing on the bank.
ἡ δὲ ἐπὶ τούτῳ κουφότης καὶ ἀναψυχὴ θεῷ μὲν καὶ μάλα ῥᾳδία γνῶναι,
And the lightness and refreshment after this was very easy for a god indeed to know,
