ὁ δʼ ἐτύγχανε προσεδρεύων τῷ θεῷ κατʼ ἐκεῖνον τὸν χρόνον—ἔφη δʼ οὖν ὁ τροφεὺς ὡς ἐν τούτῳ δὴ τῷ σχήματι διαλεχθείη πρὸς αὐτὸν περὶ τῶν λόγων τῶν ἐμῶν ἄλλα τε δὴ, οἶμαι, καὶ ὅτι ἐπισημήναιτο ὡδὶ λέγων, ἱεροὶ λόγοι. ταῦτα μὲν εἰς τοσοῦτον.
But he happened to be in attendance on the god at that time—at any rate, my foster-father said that the god had conversed with him in this very guise concerning my speeches, and, among other things, I believe, he had approved of them by saying: "Sacred Tales." So much for this.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἐδίδου τὰ ἰάματα αὐτῷ μοι, ὧν πρῶτον ἦν, ὡς ἔγωγε μέμνημαι, ὁ τοῦ βαλσάμου ὀπὸς, εἶναι δʼ αὐτὸν δωρεὰν τοῦ Τελεσφόρου τοῦ Περγαμηνοῦ· ἔδει δʼ αὐτῷ χρῆσθαι λούμενον ἐξιόντα ἐκ τοῦ θερμοῦ ὕδατος εἰς τὸ ψυχρόν· ἔπειτα ῥύμματα ἄττα διὰ σταφίδων τε καὶ ἑτέρων μικτὰ, ἔπειτα μυρία ἐπὶ μυρίοις, ἃ πάντα παρεὶς ἀναγκαίως τῶν παραδόξων μνησθῆναι βούλομαι.
After this, he gave the remedies to me myself, the first of which, as I remember, was the juice of balsam, and it was a gift of Telesphorus of Pergamum; and it was necessary to use it while bathing, as I came out of the hot water into the cold; then certain cleansings mixed with raisins and other things, and then ten thousand upon ten thousand more, all of which I shall pass over, as I must necessarily mention the extraordinary events.
πόθεν οὖν τις ἄρξηται, πολλῶν τε καὶ παντοίων ὄντων, καὶ ἅμα οὐκ ἐν μνήμῃ πάντων, πλήν γε δὴ τῆς χάριτος τῆς ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν;
From what point then should one begin, since they are many and of all kinds, and at the same time not all in my memory, except indeed for the gratitude for them?
ἔπεμψέ με εἰς Χίον φήσας πέμπειν καθάρσεως ἕνεκα.
He sent me to Chios, saying he was sending me for the sake of purification.
ἀπῄειμεν οὖν τὴν ἐπὶ Σμύρνης, καὶ μάλα ἐν ἀηδίᾳ ποιούμενοι καὶ νομίζοντες ἄνευ προστάτου γίγνεσθαι καὶ ὡς ἀληθῶς ἐφʼ ἡμῶν αὐτῶν πλεῖν, ἐπειδὴ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐγιγνόμεθα ἔξω.
So we set out on the road to Smyrna, doing so in great discomfort and thinking we were becoming without a protector and indeed sailing on our own, once we were outside the temple.
ὃν μὲν οὖν τρόπον ἅπαντες ἐξεπλάγησαν ἐν τῇ Σμύρνῃ, ὡς εἶδον φανέντα παρʼ ἐλπίδας αὐτοῖς, τί τις ἂν λέγοι;
Now, in what way everyone was astonished in Smyrna when they saw me appearing contrary to their expectations, why should anyone say?
ὡς δʼ ἐγενόμεθα ἐν Κλαζομεναῖς, ἐδόκει χρῆναι περαιώσασθαι εὐθὺ Φωκαίας.
But when we were in Clazomenae, it seemed necessary to cross over straight to Phocaea.
καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἦμεν περὶ τὰς νήσους, Δρυμοῦσαν καὶ Πήλην, αὔρα τις εὔρου ὑπήρχετο καὶ περαιτέρω προϊόντων εὖρος ἤδη λαμπρὸς, καὶ τέλος ἐξερράγη πνεῦμα ἐξαίσιον.
And when we were around the islands, Drymousa and Pely, a breeze from the east began to blow, and as we went further, it became a bright east wind, and finally a violent storm broke out.
καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἐκ πρῴρας ἀρθὲν ἐπὶ πρύμναν ὤκλασε καὶ μικροῦ κατέδυ· ἔπειτα ἐπεκλύζετο ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν· ἔπειτα ἀπεστράφη ἔξω πρὸς τὸ πέλαγος.
And the ship, lifted from the bow, sank back on the stern and almost went under; then it was washed over on this side and that; then it was turned back out toward the open sea.
ἱδρὼς δὲ καὶ θόρυβος ναυτῶν καὶ βοαὶ πᾶσαι τῶν ἐμπλεόντων, συνέπλεον γὰρ δὴ καὶ τῶν ἐπιτηδείων τινές· ἐμοὶ δὲ τοσοῦτον ἤρκεσεν εἰπεῖν, ὦ Ἀσκληπιέ. πολλὰ δὲ καὶ παντοῖα κινδυνεύσαντες καὶ τέλος περὶ αὐτὴν τὴν καταγωγὴν μυριάκις ἀνατραπέντες καὶ ἀπωσθέντες καὶ πολλὴν ἀγωνίαν τοῖς ὁρῶσι παρασχόντες διεσώθημεν ἀγαπητῶς καὶ μόλις.
There was sweat and turmoil of the sailors, and all kinds of cries from those on board—for indeed some of my friends were sailing with me—but for me it was enough to say, "O Asclepius!" Having run many and various risks, and finally having been capsized and pushed back ten thousand times right at the landing place, and having caused much anxiety to those looking on, we were saved with relief and only with difficulty.
ἐπεὶ δὲ νὺξ ἧκε, τήν τε κάθαρσιν ὁ θεὸς κελεύει ποιεῖσθαι, σημήνας ἀφʼ ὧν.
And when night came, the god ordered the purification to be made, indicating with what means.
καὶ ἐγένετο μέντοι οὐδὲν ἐλάττων ἢ ὑπὸ §294ἐλλεβόρου, ὡς ἔφασκον οἱ τούτου ἔμπειροι, ἅτε καὶ ὑπὸ τοῦ κλυδωνίου πάντων κεκινημένων.
And it was indeed no less violent than that caused by hellebore, as those experienced in this said, especially since everything had been stirred up by the rough sea.
καὶ φράζει δὴ τὸ πᾶν, ὡς εἱμαρμένον τε εἴη ναυαγῆσαί μοι καὶ τούτου ἄρα ἕνεκα καὶ ταῦτα συμβαίη· καὶ νῦν ἔτι δέοι ὑπὲρ ἀσφαλείας καὶ τοῦ παντάπασιν ἐκπλῆσαι τὸ χρεὼν, ἐμβάντα εἰς λέμβον ἐν τῷ λιμένι οὕτω ποιῆσαι, ὡς τὸν μὲν λέμβον ἀνατραπῆναι καὶ καταδῦναι, αὐτὸν δὲ ἐξάραντός τινος ἐξενεχθῆναι πρὸς τὴν γῆν· ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ τελεῖσθαι τὰ ἀναγκαῖα.
And indeed he explained the whole matter, that it was fated for me to be shipwrecked, and that for this very reason these things had happened; and even now it was still necessary for safety and to completely fulfill destiny, that having embarked on a small boat in the harbor, I should act in such a way that the boat should capsize and sink, and I myself should be carried to the shore by someone lifting me up; for in this way the necessary rites would be completed.
ἐποιοῦμεν ταῦτα ἄσμενοι δηλονότι.
We did these things gladly, of course.
καὶ πᾶσι δὴ θαυμαστὸν ἐδόκει τὸ σόφισμα τῆς ναυαγίας ἐπʼ ἀληθινῷ τῷ κινδύνῳ γενόμενον.
And the device of the shipwreck, occurring after real danger, seemed wondrous to everyone.
οὗ δὴ καὶ ἔγνωμεν ὅτι κἀκ τοῦ πελάγους ἄρα αὐτὸς ὁ σεσωκὼς ἦν.
From this indeed we realized that he who had saved us from the open sea was himself the Savior.
ἐπιθήκη δὲ τῆς εὐεργεσίας ἡ κάθαρσις.
And the purification was the addition to his beneficence.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα κατεῖχεν ἐν τῇ Φωκαίᾳ, θαυμαστὰ οἷα σημαίνων, οὐ μόνον εἰς τὸ σῶμα ἔχοντα, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἄλλα πολλὰ ἐπὶ πολλοῖς.
After this, he kept me in Phocaea, indicating wondrous things, not only concerning my body, but also many other things upon many.
καὶ δὴ καὶ τῶν ἀνέμων ἐπιεικῶς τοὺς μέλλοντας ἔσεσθαι προηκούομεν, ὥστε ὁπότε ἀκούοι τὰ ὀνείρατα ὁ ξένος ἡμῶν ὁ Ῥοῦφος—ἦν δὲ καὶ τἄλλα πρῶτος Φωκαέων, καί πως οὐδʼ αὐτὸς ἀνήκοος Ἀσκληπιοῦ—πολλὴν εἶναι τὴν ἔκπληξιν αὐτῷ ταῦτα ἀκούοντι παρʼ ἡμῶν ἔνδον, ἃ ἔξω καταλελοιπὼς εἰσῄει.
And indeed we also heard in advance, with reasonable accuracy, of the winds that were about to blow, so that whenever our host Rufus—who was in other respects the first of the Phocaeans, and somehow not himself unacquainted with Asclepius—heard my dreams, there was great astonishment for him as he heard these things from us inside, which he had left behind outside when he came in.
καὶ δὴ γάλακτός ποτε ἐδέησε τοῦ θεοῦ κελεύσαντος· ἦν δὲ οὔπω· σχεδὸν γὰρ ἦν τετρὰς ἐπὶ δέκα τοῦ δευτέρου μηνὸς, ὡς νομίζομεν οἱ ταύτῃ, ἐδόκει δὲ χρῆναι ζητεῖν.
And indeed once milk was needed at the god's command; but it was not yet the season; for it was almost the fourteenth of the second month, as we who live here reckon, but it seemed necessary to seek it.
καὶ πορευθεὶς ὁ Ῥοῦφος εἰς ἐσχατιάν τινα τῶν αὑτοῦ εὑρίσκει τετοκυῖαν ὄϊν αὐτονυχὶ, καὶ κομίσας δίδωσι τὸ γάλα.
And Rufus, going to a remote part of his estate, found a sheep that had given birth that very night, and bringing the milk, he gave it to me.
τέλος δὲ ἀφίησιν ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς τοῦ πλοῦ τοῦ εἰς τὴν Χίον, ἄλλα τε δὴ καὶ δείξας καὶ προειπὼν, καὶ ἐφʼ ἅπασιν ἔδοξα ὡς κατεσχισμένον τε εἴη τὸ πλοῖον καὶ οὐδὲν ἔτι.
Finally, the god released us from the voyage to Chios, having shown and foretold various other things, and above all I dreamed that the ship was torn apart and no longer existed.
ἔστι δὲ χωρίον Γενναῒς, ἀπέχον τῆς Φωκαίας οὐ πολὺ, ἐνταῦθα ἡμέρας τινὰς διαγαγὼν ἡμᾶς ἐν τοῖς ὕδασιν ἐπανῆγεν εἰς τὴν Σμύρναν.
And there is a place called Gennais, not far distant from Phocaea; there, having spent some days in the waters, he brought us back to Smyrna.
ὡς τοίνυν ἐγενόμεθα ἐν τῇ Σμύρνῃ, φαίνεταί μοι ἐν τοιῷδέ τινι σχήματι. ἦν ἅμα μὲν Ἀσκληπιὸς, ἅμα δὲ Ἀπόλλων, ὅ τε δὴ Κλάριος καὶ ὁ καλλίτεκνος καλούμενος ἐν Περγάμῳ, οὗ ὁ πρῶτος
Now, when we arrived in Smyrna, he appeared to me in some such guise: he was at once Asclepius and Apollo, both the Clarian and the one called "of beautiful children" in Pergamum, whose first...
