§289τῆς αὐτῆς ὄψεως γιγνομένης. ὁ δʼ ἐν τούτῳ ἀναθεῖ ὀπίσω εἴς τι χωρίον ἡμέτερον δεῆσάν τι καὶ μετʼ οὐ πολὺ ἔκαμνε.
While the same vision was occurring, he in the meantime ran back to a certain estate of ours because of some urgent business, and not long after he fell ill.
συνέβαινε δὲ κἀμοὶ τοῦ τε στομάχου καὶ τῆς ὑπερώας καὶ κεφαλῆς ὅλης καὶ σύμπαντος τοῦ σώματος οὕτως ἔχειν ὥστε ἐπʼ ἔσχατον ἐλθεῖν, καὶ τῆς τε τροφῆς ἀπεκεκλείμην καὶ ὅ τι προσείμην παραχρῆμα ἐφθείρετο, καὶ ἀναπνεῖν οὐκ ἦν καὶ ἡ δύναμις καθῄρητο.
And it happened that I too was in such a state with respect to my stomach, palate, entire head, and my whole body as to reach the very extremity, and I was excluded from food, and whatever I took in was immediately ruined, and it was not possible to breathe, and my strength was destroyed.
ἀπείχομεν δὲ ἀλλήλων σταδίους μάλιστα εἴκοσι καὶ ἑκατόν.
We were separated from each other by about one hundred and twenty stades.
συνέβαινεν οὖν ἡμῖν πυνθανομένοις ὡς ἔχοιμεν ἑκάτεροι πολὺ μᾶλλον οἷς ἠκούομεν ἢ τοῖς αὐτῷ παροῦσιν ἑκάτερον βαρύνεσθαι.
Therefore, as we learned how each of us was doing, it happened that each of us was much more distressed by what we heard than by the troubles present to ourselves.
φανέντος δὲ τοῦ θεοῦ λαμβάνομαι τῆς κεφαλῆς ἐπαλλὰξ τοῖν χεροῖν, καὶ λαβόμενος ἐδεόμην σῶσαί μοι τὸν Ζώσιμον.
When the god appeared, I grasped his head with my hands crossed, and holding him, I begged him to save Zosimus for me.
ἀνένευσεν ὁ θεός.
The god shook his head in refusal.
πάλιν οὖν τὴν αὐτὴν λαβὴν λαβόμενος ἐδεόμην ἐπινεῦσαι.
So, taking the same hold again, I begged him to nod in assent.
αὖθις ἀνένευσε.
Again he shook his head.
τὸ τρίτον παραλαβὼν ἐπειρώμην πεῖσαι ἐπινεῦσαι· ὁ δὲ οὔτε ἀνένευσεν οὔτε ἐπένευσεν, ἀλλʼ εἶχε διʼ ἴσου τὴν κεφαλὴν καί μοι λέγει ῥήματα ἄττα, ἃ χρὴ λέγειν ἐν τοῖς τοιούτοις, ὡς ἀνύσιμα· ἁγὼ μνημονεύων οὐκ οἶμαι δεῖν ἐκφέρειν εἰκῆ.
Grasping him a third time, I tried to persuade him to nod in assent; but he neither shook his head nor nodded, but kept his head level and spoke certain words to me, which one ought to say in such circumstances as being effective; which, though I remember them, I do not think I should publish at random.
ἔφη δʼ οὖν ὅτι ἐπαρκέσει τούτων λεχθέντων· ἓν δʼ ἦν αὐτῶν, φύλαξον. τί οὖν ἀπέβη αὐτῷ μετὰ ταῦτα;
At any rate, he said that it would be sufficient when these were spoken; and one of them was, 'Protect!' What then was the outcome for him after this?
πρῶτον μὲν ἀνίσταται παρʼ ἐλπίδας ἐξ ἐκείνης τῆς νόσου ὁ Ζώσιμος, καθαρθείς γε διὰ πτισάνης καὶ φακῆς, προειπόντος ἐμοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ ὑπὲρ αὐτοῦ, ἔπειτα ἐπεβίω μῆνας τέτταρας· ὥστε ἐνετύχομέν τε ἀλλήλοις καὶ συνεωρτάσαμεν, γενομένης γε κἀμοὶ παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ βοηθείας πολλῆς καὶ συνεχοῦς καὶ παράδοξα ἐχούσης.
First, Zosimus rose from that disease contrary to expectation, having been purged by barley-gruel and lentils, just as the god had foretold to me on his behalf; and then he survived for four months; so that we met each other and celebrated together, since great and continuous help came to me too from the god, containing extraordinary things.
ὧν ἓν ἦν λειποψυχοῦντα καὶ παντελῶς ἀπορούμενον ποιῆσαι μέλη, γάμον τε κορωνίδος καὶ γένεσιν τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τὴν στροφὴν ὡς ἐπὶ μήκιστον ἀποτεῖναι· καὶ ἐποίησα τὰ ᾁσματα ἐφʼ ἡσυχίας οὑτωσὶ καὶ κατʼ ἐμαυτὸν ἐνθυμηθεὶς, καὶ πάντων ἤδη λήθη ἦν τῶν δυσχερῶν.
One of which was that, when I was fainting and utterly at a loss, I composed songs, both on the marriage of Coronis and the birth of the god, and to extend the strophe as long as possible; and I composed the songs in this way in quietness, contemplating by myself, and there was already forgetfulness of all troubles.
καὶ δὴ καὶ κλύσματι χρήσασθαι ἐπετάχθην.
And indeed I was also ordered to use an enema.
ὥσθʼ ὁ μὲν ἰατρὸς οὐκ ἐθάρρει προσφέρειν, ὁρῶν τὴν λεπτότητα τοῦ σώματος καὶ τὴν ἀδυναμίαν, ἀλλʼ ἡγεῖτο ὥσπερ αὐτόχειρ ἔσεσθαί μου· ἐγὼ δʼ ἔπεισα μόλις καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀνήνεγκα.
So that the doctor did not dare to administer it, seeing the thinness and weakness of my body, but thought that he would be as it were my murderer; but I persuaded him with difficulty, and immediately recovered.
τροφὴν δὲ ἔδωκε λάχανα ἄγρια, ἃ καὶ πέψιν καὶ δύναμιν παρέσχε μοι τινά.
And he gave as food wild vegetables, which provided me both digestion and some strength.
§290ταῦτα μὲν οὖν οὕτως ἐγένετο.
Now these things happened in this way.
ὁ δὲ Ζώσιμος ἐμακαρίζετο ὑπὸ πάντων καὶ αὐτὸς οὐκ εἶχεν ὅστις γένηται, τῷ τε θεῷ χάριν ἔχων τῆς προνοίας καὶ τῆς διακονίας ἐμοί.
Zosimus was congratulated by everyone, and he himself did not know what to do with himself for joy, feeling gratitude to the god for his providence and for his service to me.
καί μοι δοκεῖ καὶ πλείω βιῶναι χρόνον, εἰ μὴ διʼ ἀρετήν τινα ἑαυτοῦ.
And it seems to me that he would have lived even longer, had it not been for a certain virtue of his own.
πυθόμενος γὰρ τῶν οἰκετῶν τινα τῶν ἐμῶν καὶ μάλα τῶν χρησίμων κάμνειν ᾤχετο ἀπιὼν χειμῶνος ὥρᾳ, σταδίους τετταράκοντα, ὡς ἐπισκεψόμενός τε καὶ βοηθήσων ὅ τι οἷός τε εἴη· ἦν γὰρ δὴ καὶ τὴν τέχνην ἀγαθὸς τὴν ἰατρικήν.
For, having learned that one of my servants, and indeed a very useful one, was ill, he went off in the winter season, a distance of forty stades, in order to visit him and help in whatever way he could; for he was indeed also skilled in the medical art.
ἐκπεσὼν δὲ τοῦ ὀχήματος ἐν χιόνι πολλῇ καὶ κρυμῷ καὶ παθὼν πολλὰ καὶ δεινὰ, ἀπιών τε καὶ ἐπανιὼν ἐμπίπτει τὸ δεύτερον εἰς νόσον δεινὴν καὶ χαλεπήν· ὥστʼ οὐδʼ αὐτὸς ἐτόλμα κατʼ ἀρχὰς οὐδὲν τῶν συμβεβηκότων αὑτῷ δηλῶσαι πρὸς ἐμέ.
But having fallen from his carriage in deep snow and intense cold, and having suffered many terrible things, both going and returning, he fell a second time into a terrible and severe illness; so that at first not even he himself dared to reveal any of his circumstances to me.
ἐγώ τε ὡς ᾐσθόμην, οὐχὶ προσῄειν, ὀργιζόμενος ὅτι οὐκ ἔπεισε.
And when I perceived it, I did not go to him, being angry that he had not complied.
τῆς γὰρ νυκτὸς τῆς παρελθούσης ἐγεγόνει μοι ὄψις ὀνείρατος τοιαύτη· ἐδόκει μοι λέγειν ὁ νεωκόρος ὁ Ἀσκληπιακὸς, Ζώσιμον δὲ ἔδει ἀναλαμβάνειν ἑαυτὸν, ἕως ἔξεστιν.
For during the preceding night, there had appeared to me a dream-vision of this sort: the temple warden of Asclepius seemed to say to me that Zosimus ought to recover himself while it was still possible.
ἐγὼ οὖν ἐπὶ τούτῳ τῷ ὀνείρατι οὐκ εἴων αὐτὸν κινεῖσθαι, ὅθʼ ἡ περὶ τοῦ οἰκέτου ἦλθεν ἀγγελία.
I, therefore, on the strength of this dream, did not allow him to move when the message about the servant arrived.
ὁ δʼ ἀπειθήσας ᾤχετο, ἐκ δὲ τούτου ἡ τελευτὴ ἐγένετο αὐτῷ.
But he, disobeying, went off, and as a result of this, death came to him.
οὕτως ὅσον τε ἐπεβίω χάρις ἦν τοῦ θεοῦ, ὡς ἀληθῶς φυλάξαντος αὐτόν μοι, καὶ ἐτελεύτα παρὰ τὰ φανθέντα κινηθείς· καὶ τὰ κατʼ ἀρχὰς ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ δειχθέντα, ὅτε αὐτοῦ λαβόμενος τῆς κεφαλῆς ἱκέτευον, εἰς τοῦτο ἐτελεύτησε.
Thus, as long as he survived, it was by the grace of the god, who truly protected him for me, and he died because he moved contrary to what had been revealed; and what had been shown by the god at the beginning, when I grasped his head and implored him, came to this end.
τὴν τοίνυν τροφὸν τὴν ἀρχαίαν, ἧς οὐδέν μοι φίλτερον, Φιλουμένη ἦν ὄνομα αὐτῇ, μυριάκις μὲν ἔσωσε παρʼ ἐλπίδας, κειμένην δέ ποτε ἀνέστησεν ἐκπέμψας ἐμὲ ἀπὸ Περγάμου, προειπὼν ὅτι καὶ τὴν τροφὸν ἐλαφροτέραν ποιήσοιμι.
As for my old nurse, then, than whom nothing was dearer to me—her name was Philumene—the god saved her contrary to expectation ten thousand times, and once, when she was bedridden, he raised her up by sending me away from Pergamum, having foretold that I would make the nurse easier too.
καὶ ἅμα λαμβάνω τινὰ ἐπιστολὴν πρὸ ποδῶν κειμένην τοῦ Διὸς Ἀσκληπιοῦ, σύμβολον ποιούμενος· εὗρον οὖν μόνον οὐ διαρρήδην ἕκαστα ἐγγεγραμμένα.
And at the same time I received a certain letter lying before the feet of Zeus Asclepius, taking it as a sign; I found, then, almost explicitly, everything written in it.
ὥστε ἐξῄειν ὑπερχαίρων καὶ καταλαμβάνω τὴν τροφὸν τοσοῦτον ἀντέχουσαν ὅσον αἰσθέσθαι προσιόντος.
So that I went out exceeding glad, and found my nurse holding out just enough to perceive me approaching.
ὡς δʼ ᾔσθετο, ἀνέκραγε τε καὶ ἀνειστήκει οὐκ εἰς μακράν.
And when she perceived me, she cried out and arose not long after.
