...and though my foot was numb, I seemed to enter the great house.
And someone from the temple of Olympian Zeus seemed to approach, and I seemed to relate to him that dreams had come to me from the god, and to bid him to assist.
But he said that he too had had a dream, that he took a pig's leg and lay down to sleep in the temple of Asclepius, having prepared it just as I was accustomed to do.
And after this, as if in Pergamum, I seemed to send a wreath to the god, one of the long ones, which are those they bring privately to Asclepius, having ordered the one carrying it away—who was Agathion—to bring back another to me from the temple warden.
And when he brought it back, to place it on my right side, as I happened to be lying down.
And besides this, I seemed to be somewhere or other, and rising, to search for my nurse; and she lived opposite to my door; and someone answered that some hindrances had happened to her, until indeed I actually saw both the nurse approaching and Kallityche, my foster-sister, following her.
And as for what the nurse was carrying, at first I guessed them to be apples, but then they were three boiled eggs with the shells peeled off, as if for one already about to eat.
And bringing them, she said, 'Just what you would expect from the country.' And I both wondered and said that the eggs had come by divine providence; 'for,' I said, 'the god ordered me today to use an egg and small leaves, and to set a wreath from the god beside me.' I did these things.
And the wreath was from the temple of Zeus Asclepius.
And abstinence from bathing was also indicated through many things.
On the nineteenth, I seemed to spend time in the palace, and the care and honor of the emperors toward me was wonderful and unsurpassable through all things in order which they did.
For all things happened to me alone, of which not even a small part happened to anyone else.
And on the one hand, I spent time and lived together with them inside, with no other of the grandees being present; and on the other hand, again they led me around with themselves; and they went away to inspect a trench which they happened to have dug around the city, so that the inflowing water might not do damage; where indeed I also saw the earth being thrown out.
Indeed, wonderful things were also shown to me along the way.
For I was often in the middle of both of them, and whenever I wished to walk around so as to place the elder in the middle, the younger did this himself, and I always remained in my place.
And he seemed to me to be of a boy's age, and this also happened often.
And indeed, when it was necessary to mount toward some high place and a sort of ladder, first the younger assisted, and I uttered words as one expressing thanks; then up at the end the elder.
And when he asked how, I said that he had assisted altogether and in everything.
And upon this, wishing now to depart, I said, 'I thank you, emperors, for all the care and honor with which you have honored me.' And they, interrupting, said, 'Nay, we thank the gods for having made trial of such a man; for we believe you to be similar also in respect to your speeches.' And from this, the elder began to say that it belonged to the same character to be both a good man and good in respect to speeches.
And the younger added a saying of someone, saying that the character of one's speeches follows one's way of life.
And I said that I should wish these things to be so; 'for it is profitable to me for my speeches, if indeed in other respects I am understood by you to be such a man, and at the same time if I am going to have two good things instead of one.' Such things I answered them.
And there were countless other things both happening and being said, greater than speech and expectation.
Then, having fallen asleep after this, I seemed to dream that one of my acquaintances, named Diophanes, spoke to me as one who had been present and seen the excesses of my honors, and that one of the younger companions was also present and wondered as he heard how I was so highly esteemed among all.
And after this, I appeared in a certain bath.
And at first it occurred to me what a thing I had done, that I was bathing before seeing the emperors, for indeed I seemed to have met them yesterday; then as I was already being rubbed down and a sweat was coming on, I said, 'Let us go inside.' Thus indeed I bathed, and I vomited toward evening, having taken to heart the matter of the earth that was being carried out.
And nevertheless I was still considering about the road to...
