The remaining part of Europe is Macedonia and the parts of Thrace contiguous to it as far as Byzantium, and Greece, and the adjacent islands.
Now Macedonia, to be sure, is also Greece; but at present, following the nature of the places and their shape, we have determined to arrange it separately from the rest of Greece, and to join it to Thrace which borders on it as far as the mouth of the Euxine and the Propontis.
Then, after a few words, he mentions Cypsela and the river Hebrus.
And he also outlines a certain parallelogram shape, in which the whole of Macedonia is contained.

Macedonia is bounded on the west by the coast of the Adriatic; on the east by its parallel meridian line running through the mouths of the river Hebrus and the city of Cypsela; on the north by the imaginary straight line running through Mount Bertiscus, Scardus, Orbelus, Rhodope, and Haemus (for these mountains, starting from the Adriatic, extend in a straight line as far as the Euxine, forming a great peninsula to the south, comprising Thrace together with Macedonia, Epirus, and Achaea); and on the south by the Egnatian Way for those going from the city of Dyrrachium eastward as far as Thessalonica.
And this shape of Macedonia is very nearly a parallelogram.

What is now Macedonia was formerly called Emathia.
And it took this name from Makedon, one of its ancient chieftains.
There was also a city Emathia near the sea.
This country was held by certain of the Epirotes and Illyrians, but the greater part of it by the Bottiaei and Thracians.
The former, they say, were of Crete by race, having Botton as leader; and of the Thracians, the Pieres inhabited Pieria and the parts around Olympus, the Paeones the region around the river Axius and the territory called for this reason Amphaxitis, and the Edoni and Bisaltae the remaining country as far as the Strymon.
Of these, some were called by this very name, Bisaltae, while of the Edoni some were called Mygdones, some Edones, and others Sithones.
Of all these, those called Argeadae established themselves as masters, as did also the Chalcidians of Euboea.
For the Chalcidians of Euboea also came upon the country of the Sithones and founded in it about thirty cities, from which they were later expelled and the majority of them came together into one, namely Olynthus; and they were called the Chalcidians in Thrace.

The ethnic name of Botteia is written with an iota (ι), as Strabo says in Book VII.
It is named after Botton the Cretan.

The Peneius bounds lower Macedonia, which is near the sea, from Thessaly and Magnesia, and the Haliacmon bounds upper Macedonia, and further, both itself and the Erigon and the Axius and others bound the Epirotes and the Paeones.

Of the Macedonian coast starting from the recess of the Thermaic Gulf and Thessalonica, one part extends southward as far as Sunium, and the other eastward as far as the Thracian Chersonese, making a kind of angle at the recess.
Since Macedonia reaches down to each of these two parts, we must begin with the former one mentioned.
Now the first parts around Sunium have Attica lying above them, together with the Megarian territory, as far as the Crisaean Gulf; after this is the Boeotian coast facing Euboea, and above it lies the rest of Boeotia, extending westward parallel to Attica.
He says also that the Egnatian Way ends at Thessalonica from the Ionian Gulf.
