The Magnesians who became famous were Hegesias the rhetorician, who chiefly introduced the so-called Asian style, having corrupted the established Attic custom; and Simus the lyric poet, who himself also corrupted the style of the earlier lyric poets and introduced the "Simodia" (as did the "Lysiodoi" and "Magodoi" even more); and Cleomachus the boxer, who, having fallen in love with a certain kinaidos and a young maidservant reared by a kinaidos, imitated the style of dialects and character-acting found among the kinaidoi.
Now Sotades was the first to begin the "kinaidologia", and then Alexander the Aetolian; but these did so in plain prose, whereas Lysis did so with melody, and Simus even earlier than he.
As for Anaxenor the citharode, the theatres indeed exalted him, but most of all Antony, who even appointed him tax-collector of four cities, having assigned soldiers to him as guards.
And his native city also sufficiently exalted him, having clad him in purple as the priest of Zeus Sosipolis, just as the painted portrait in the agora shows.
And there is also a bronze statue in the theatre, which has this inscription: "Indeed, it is a beautiful thing to listen to such a singer as this man is, like unto the gods in his voice." But the person who inscribed it, not having calculated well, left out the last letter of the second verse because the width of the base was not sufficient; so that it gave occasion to accuse the city of ignorance, because of the ambiguity concerning the writing, whether one should take the last word as in the nominative case or the dative; for many write the datives without the iota, and discard the custom which has no natural reason.
After Magnesia comes the road to Tralles, for those who keep Mesogis on the left, and on the road itself and on the right the plain of the Maeander, which is occupied in common by Lydians and Carians, as well as Ionians of Miletus and Myus, and also Aeolians of Magnesia; and the same character of the topography continues as far as Nysa and Antioch.
The city of the Trallians is situated on a certain trapezoidal hill which has a strong acropolis; and the surrounding places also are sufficiently well-defended.
It is as well inhabited by wealthy people as any other city in Asia, and some of its citizens are always those who hold the primary rank in the province, whom they call Asiarchs.
Among these was Pythodorus, originally a man of Nysa, but having relocated there on account of his celebrity, and having been distinguished, along with a few others, in his friendship with Pompey.
He had also acquired a royal estate of more than two thousand talents, which having been sold by the deified Caesar on account of his friendship with Pompey, he bought back and left no less a sum to his children.
And his daughter is Pythodoris, who is now reigning in Pontus, concerning whom we have spoken.
This man, indeed, flourished in our time, as did also Menodorus, a learned man and otherwise grave and dignified, who held the priesthood of Zeus Larisaeus; but he was undermined by the friends of Domitius Ahenobarbus, and the latter put him to death, believing those who informed against him that he was causing the fleet to revolt.
There were also distinguished rhetoricians, Dionysocles, and after him Damasos, surnamed Scombros.
And they say that Tralles was a foundation of Argives and certain Thracian Trallians, from whom it took its name.
It befell the city to be ruled by tyrants for a short time by the sons of Cratippus during the Mithridatic War.
