"
Therefore, he [Homer] says that the city of Eetion is Thebe: "We went to Thebe, the sacred city of Eetion, "and he also implies that Chrysa, the temple of Smintheus Apollo, belonged to this man, if indeed Chryseis was captured from Thebe; for he says: "For we went, "he says, "to Thebe; and we plundered it and brought everything here.
And they distributed these well among themselves, and they chose out Chryseis for Atreides.
"
"And he says that Lyrnessus belongs to Mynes, since, after Achilles, "having plundered Lyrnessus and the walls of Thebe, "had slain both Mynes and Epistrophus, so that when Briseis says: "Nor did you allow me, when the swift Achilles slew my husband, and plundered the city of divine Mynes, "she would not mean Thebe (for this belonged to Eetion) but Lyrnessus.
And both were in what was afterwards called the Plain of Thebe, which, on account of its fertility, they say became a subject of contention first for the Mysians and Lydians, and later for the Greeks who migrated there from Aeolis and Lesbos.
And now the Adramyttians hold the greater part of it; for here are both Thebe and Lyrnessus, a strong place; but both are deserted.
And they are distant from Adramyttium, the one sixty stadia, and the other eighty-eight stadia in the opposite direction.
In the Adramyttian territory are also Chrysa and Cilla; near Thebe, therefore, even now a certain place is called Cilla, in which there is a temple of Cillaean Apollo; and the Cillaeus River, flowing from Ida, flows beside it.
These places are near the territory of Antandros; and the Cillaeum in Lesbos is named after this Cilla; and there is also a Mount Cillaeum between Gargara and Antandros.
And Daes of Colonae says that the temple of Cillaean Apollo was first established in Colonae by the Aeolians who sailed from Greece; and they say that Cillaean Apollo was also established in Chrysa, though it is unclear whether he is the same as Smintheus or different.
Chrysa was a small town on the sea having a harbor, and near it lies Thebe on the heights; and here was also the temple of Smintheus Apollo, and Chryseis; but now the place is completely deserted.
And the temple has been relocated to the present Chrysa near Hamaxitus, since some of the Cilicians were expelled to Pamphylia and others to Hamaxitus.
But those who are less experienced in ancient history say that Chryses and Chryseis lived there, and that Homer mentions this place.
But there is no harbor here, whereas he says: "And when they had come within the very deep harbor, "nor is the temple on the sea, whereas he makes the temple to be on the sea: "And Chryseis went forth from the deep-sea ship; her then Odysseus of many counsels, leading to the altar, placed in the hands of her dear father.
"Nor is it near Thebe, whereas he makes it near; at any rate, he says that Chryseis was captured from there.
Furthermore, no place called Cilla is shown in the territory of the Alexandrians, nor any temple of Cillaean Apollo; but the poet joins them together: "Who protectest Chrysa and very sacred Cilla, "whereas in the Plain of Thebe it is shown nearby.
And the voyage from the Cilician Chrysa to the naval station is about seven hundred stadia, about a day's sail, which is as far as Odysseus appears to have sailed.
For as soon as he lands, he offers the sacrifice to the god, and when evening comes on, he remains there, and sails away in the morning; but from Hamaxitus it is scarcely a third of the said distance, so that it would have been possible for Odysseus to sail back to the naval station on the very same day after completing the sacrifice.
There is also a monument of Cillus near the temple of Cillaean Apollo, a great mound; and they say he was the charioteer of Pelops who ruled these places, from whom perhaps Cilicia was named, or vice versa.
