§13.1.22Ἄβυδος δὲ Μιλησίων ἐστὶ κτίσμα ἐπιτρέψαντος Γύγου τοῦ Λυδῶν βασιλέως· ἦν γὰρ ἐπʼ ἐκείνῳ τὰ χωρία καὶ ἡ Τρῳὰς ἅπασα, ὀνομάζεται δὲ καὶ ἀκρωτήριόν τι πρὸς Δαρδάνῳ Γύγας·
Abydus is a foundation of the Milesians, Gyges the king of the Lydians having permitted it; for those places and the whole Troas were subject to him, and a certain promontory near Dardanus is also named Gygas.
ἐπίκειται δὲ τῷ στόματι τῆς Προποντίδος καὶ τοῦ Ἑλλησπόντου, διέχει δὲ τὸ ἴσον Λαμψάκου καὶ Ἰλίου, σταδίους περὶ ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ ἑκατόν.
It lies at the mouth of the Propontis and the Hellespont, and is at an equal distance from Lampsacus and Ilium, about one hundred and seventy stadia.
ἐνταῦθα δʼ ἔστι τὸ ἑπταστάδιον ὅπερ ἔζευξε Ξέρξης, τὸ διορίζον τὴν Εὐρώπην καὶ τὴν Ἀσίαν.
And here is the seven-stadium strait which Xerxes bridged, that which divides Europe and Asia.
καλεῖται δʼ ἡ ἄκρα τῆς Εὐρώπης Χερρόνησος διὰ τὸ σχῆμα, ἡ ποιοῦσα τὰ στενὰ τὰ κατὰ τὸ ζεῦγμα· ἀντίκειται δὲ τὸ ζεῦγμα τῇ Ἀβύδῳ.
And the promontory of Europe is called Chersonesus because of its shape, which forms the narrows at the bridge; and the bridge lies opposite to Abydus.
Σηστὸς δὲ ἀρίστη τῶν ἐν Χερρονήσῳ πόλεων· διὰ δὲ τὴν γειτοσύνην ὑπὸ τῷ αὐτῷ ἡγεμόνι καὶ αὕτη ἐτέτακτο, οὔπω ταῖς ἠπείροις διοριζόντων τῶν τότε τὰς ἡγεμονίας.
Sestus is the best of the cities in the Chersonesus; and because of its proximity it also was placed under the same ruler, since the people of that time did not yet define their governments by continents.
ἡ μὲν οὖν Ἄβυδος καὶ ἡ Σηστὸς διέχουσιν ἀλλήλων τριάκοντά που σταδίους ἐκ λιμένος εἰς λιμένα, τὸ δὲ ζεῦγμά ἐστι μικρὸν ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων παραλλάξαντι ἐξ Ἀβύδου μὲν ὡς ἐπὶ τὴν Προποντίδα, ἐκ δὲ Σηστοῦ εἰς τοὐναντίον· ὀνομάζεται δὲ πρὸς τῇ Σηστῷ τόπος Ἀποβάθρα, καθʼ ὃν ἐζεύγνυτο ἡ σχεδία.
Now Abydus and Sestus are distant from each other about thirty stadia from harbor to harbor; but the bridge is a little away from the cities, for one who deviates from Abydus towards the Propontis, and from Sestus in the opposite direction; and a place near Sestus is named Apobathra, where the raft-bridge was joined.
ἔστι δὲ ἡ Σηστὸς ἐνδοτέρω κατὰ τὴν Προποντίδα ὑπερδέξιος τοῦ ῥοῦ τοῦ ἐξ αὐτῆς· διὸ καὶ εὐπετέστερον ἐκ τῆς Σηστοῦ διαίρουσι παραλεξάμενοι μικρὸν ἐπὶ τὸν τῆς Ἡροῦς πύργον, κἀκεῖθεν ἀφιέντες τὰ πλοῖα συμπράττοντος τοῦ ῥοῦ πρὸς τὴν περαίωσιν· τοῖς δʼ ἐξ Ἀβύδου περαιουμένοις παραλεκτέον ἐστὶν εἰς τἀναντία ὀκτώ που σταδίους ἐπὶ πύργον τινὰ κατʼ ἀντικρὺ τῆς Σηστοῦ, ἔπειτα διαίρειν πλάγιον καὶ μὴ τελέως ἐναντίον ἔχουσι τὸν ῥοῦν.
Sestus lies further in towards the Propontis, to the upper side of the current flowing out of it; wherefore they cross over more easily from Sestus by sailing along the coast a little to the tower of Hero, and from there letting the vessels go, with the current cooperating for the crossing; but those who cross from Abydus must sail along the coast in the opposite direction about eight stadia to a certain tower opposite Sestus, and then cross obliquely, and not have the current completely against them.
ᾤκουν δὲ τὴν Ἄβυδον μετὰ τὰ Τρωικὰ Θρᾷκες, εἶτα Μιλήσιοι.
And Thracians inhabited Abydus after the Trojan War, and then Milesians.
τῶν δὲ πόλεων ἐμπρησθεισῶν ὑπὸ Δαρείου τοῦ Ξέρξου πατρὸς τῶν κατὰ τὴν Προποντίδα, ἐκοινώνησε καὶ ἡ Ἄβυδος τῆς αὐτῆς συμφορᾶς· ἐνέπρησε δὲ πυθόμενος μετὰ τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν Σκυθῶν ἐπάνοδον τοὺς νομάδας παρασκευάζεσθαι διαβαίνειν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν κατὰ τιμωρίαν ὧν ἔπαθον, δεδιὼς μὴ αἱ πόλεις πορθμεῖα παράσχοιεν τῇ στρατιᾷ.
And when the cities along the Propontis were burned by Darius, the father of Xerxes, Abydus also shared in the same misfortune; for he burned them on learning, after his return from the Scythians, that the nomads were preparing to cross over against him to avenge what they had suffered, fearing lest the cities should provide passage for the army.
συνέβη δὲ πρὸς ταῖς ἄλλαις μεταβολαῖς καὶ τῷ χρόνῳ καὶ τοῦτο αἴτιον τῆς συγχύσεως τῶν τόπων.
And this, in addition to the other changes and to time, also happened to be a cause of the confusion of these places.
περὶ δὲ Σηστοῦ καὶ τῆς ὅλης Χερρονήσου προείπομεν ἐν τοῖς περὶ τῆς Θρᾴκης τόποις.
But concerning Sestus and the whole Chersonesus, we have already spoken in the passages concerning Thrace.
φησὶ δὲ τὴν Σηστὸν Θεόπομπος βραχεῖαν μὲν εὐερκῆ δέ, καὶ σκέλει διπλέθρῳ συνάπτειν πρὸς τὸν λιμένα, καὶ διὰ ταῦτʼ οὖν καὶ διὰ τὸν ῥοῦν κυρίαν εἶναι τῶν παρόδων.
And Theopompus says that Sestus is small but well-fortified, and is connected to the harbor by a double-plethron wall, and therefore, and on account of the current, is mistress of the passages.
§13.1.23ὑπέρκειται δὲ τῆς τῶν Ἀβυδηνῶν χώρας ἐν τῇ Τρῳάδι τὰ Ἄστυρα, ἃ νῦν μὲν Ἀβυδηνῶν ἔστι, κατεσκαμμένη πόλις, πρότερον δὲ ἦν καθʼ αὑτά, χρυσεῖα ἔχοντα ἃ νῦν σπάνιά ἐστιν, ἐξαναλωμένα, καθάπερ τὰ ἐν τῷ Τμώλῳ τὰ περὶ τὸν Πακτωλόν.
And above the territory of the Abydenes in the Troas lies Astyra, which now belongs to the Abydenes, a ruined city, but formerly was independent, having gold mines which now are scarce, being exhausted, just like those in Tmolus near the Pactolus.
ἀπὸ Ἀβύδου δʼ ἐπὶ Αἴσηπον περὶ ἑπτακοσίους φασὶ σταδίους, εὐθυπλοίᾳ δὲ ἐλάττους.
And from Abydus to the Aesepus they say it is about seven hundred stadia, but less by a direct voyage.
§13.1.24ἔξω δὲ Ἀβύδου τὰ περὶ τὸ Ἴλιον ἔστι, τά τε παράλια ἕως Λεκτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἐν τῷ Τρωικῷ πεδίῳ καὶ τὰ παρώρεια τῆς Ἴδης τὰ ὑπὸ τῷ Αἰνείᾳ.
Outside of Abydus are the places around Ilium, both the coastal parts as far as Lectum, and those in the Trojan plain, and the foothills of Ida which were under Aeneas.
διττῶς δὲ ταῦτʼ ὀνομάζει ὁ ποιητής, τοτὲ μὲν οὕτω λέγων
"
Δαρδανίων αὖτʼ ἦρχεν ἐὺς πάις Ἀγχίσαο,
"
Δαρδανίους καλῶν, τοτὲ δὲ Δαρδάνους
"
Τρῶες καὶ Λύκιοι καὶ Δάρδανοι ἀγχιμαχηταί.
And the poet names these in a double way, sometimes speaking thus: "Then the brave son of Anchises led the Dardanians, "calling them Dardanians, and sometimes Dardani: "Trojans and Lycians and Dardani who fight hand to hand.

εἰκὸς δʼ ἐνταῦθα ἱδρῦσθαι τὸ παλαιὸν τὴν λεγομένην ὑπὸ τοῦ ποιητοῦ Δαρδανίαν
"
Δάρδανον αὖ πρῶτον τέκετο νεφεληγερέτα Ζεύς,
κτίσσε δὲ Δαρδανίην.
"And it is probable that the Dardania spoken of by the poet was anciently established here: "First cloud-gathering Zeus begat Dardanus, and he founded Dardania.
"
νῦν μὲν γὰρ οὐδʼ ἴχνος πόλεως σώζεται αὐτόθι.
"For now not even a trace of a city is preserved there.
