In the mountains above Albania, they say that the Amazons also dwell.
Now Theophanes, who campaigned with Pompey and was among the Albanians, says that the Gelae and the Legae, who are Scythians, dwell between the Amazons and the Albanians, and that the Mermadalis River flows there between them and the Amazons.
But others, among whom are Metrodorus of Scepsis and Hypsicrates, who themselves were not unacquainted with these regions, say that they dwell bordering on the Gargarians on the northern foothills of the Caucasian Mountains which are called Ceraunia; at other times they live by themselves, performing for themselves every task of plowing, planting, and pasturing, especially of horses, while the most warlike among them spend most of their time in hunting and practicing military affairs.
They also say that all of them have their right breast seared from infancy, so that they can easily use their arm for every need, and especially for throwing the javelin; and that they use the bow, the sagaris, and the pelta, and make helmets, coverings, and belts from the skins of wild beasts.
They have two special months in the spring, during which they go up to the nearby mountain that separates them from the Gargarians.
The Gargarians also go up according to a certain ancient custom, to offer sacrifice together and to associate with the women for the sake of child-begetting, secretly and in the dark, any man with any woman; and when they have made them pregnant, they send them away.
The women keep whatever female children they bear, but carry the males to the Gargarians to be brought up; and each man adopts whichever child is brought to him, regarding it as his own son because of his ignorance.
The Mermodas, rushing down from the mountains through the territory of the Amazons and Siracenē and all the desert between them, empties into Lake Maeotis.
As for the Gargarians, they say that they went up together with the Amazons from Themiscyra to these regions, but then, having revolted from them, waged war against them in alliance with certain Thracians and Euboeans who had wandered as far as this place, but later, having ended the war against them, made a treaty on the terms mentioned, so that they should only share in children, but each live by themselves.
A peculiar thing has happened to the account of the Amazons; for all other accounts have the mythical and the historical distinguished.
For the ancient, false, and monstrous things are called myths, while history wishes for the truth, whether ancient or modern, and either does not contain the monstrous or does so rarely.
But regarding the Amazons, the same things are said both now and of old, though they are monstrous and far from credible.
τίς γὰρ ἂν πιστεύσειεν, ὡς γυναικῶν στρατὸς ἢ πόλις ἢ ἔθνος συσταίη ἄν ποτε χωρὶς ἀνδρῶν;
For who would believe that an army of women, or a city, or a nation, could ever be organized without men?
καὶ οὐ μόνον γε συσταίη, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐφόδους ποιήσαιτο ἐπὶ τὴν ἀλλοτρίαν καὶ κρατήσειεν οὐ τῶν ἐγγὺς μόνον ὥστε καὶ μέχρι τῆς νῦν Ἰωνίας προελθεῖν, ἀλλὰ καὶ διαπόντιον στείλαιτο στρατείαν μέχρι τῆς Ἀττικῆς;
And not only organized, but even make incursions into foreign territory, and conquer not only their neighbors, so as even to advance as far as what is now Ionia, but also send an overseas expedition as far as Attica?
For this is just as if one should say that the men of that time were women and the women men.
Yet, these very things are even now said about them.
And this peculiarity is intensified by the fact that the ancient things are believed more than those of the present.
At any rate, the foundations of cities and their names are spoken of, such as Ephesus, Smyrna, Cyme, and Myrina, and tombs and other monuments are shown; and everyone calls Themiscyra and the plains about the Thermodon and the mountains that lie above them the plains and mountains of the Amazons, and they say they were driven out from there.
But as to where they are now, only a few make declarations, and that without proof and past belief; as is also the case with Thalestria, who they say met Alexander in Hyrcania and consorted with him for the sake of child-begetting, she being the ruler of the Amazons.
For this is not agreed upon; on the contrary, among so many writers, those who cared most for the truth have not mentioned it, nor do those who are most believed make any mention of such a thing, nor do those who have told it tell the same story.
Cleitarchus, indeed, says that Thalestria set out from the Caspian Gates and the Thermodon and came to Alexander; but the distance from the Caspian Sea to the Thermodon is more than six thousand stadia.
