A significant proof of the wealth and power of the country is the fact that when Pompey imposed on Tigranes, the father of Artavasdes, a payment of six thousand talents of silver, he immediately distributed it to the Roman forces, giving fifty drachmae to each soldier, a thousand to each centurion, and a talent to each cavalry commander and military tribune.
As for the size of the country, Theophanes gives its width as one hundred schoeni and its length as double that, reckoning the schoenus at forty stadia; but he has spoken with exaggeration.
It is closer to the truth to set the length as stated by him, and the width as half of that or slightly more.
Such, then, is the nature and power of Armenia.
The ancient lore concerning this nation is of the following sort: Armenus, from Armenium, a Thessalian city situated between Pherae and Larisa on Lake Boebe, as has been said, joined Jason on the expedition to Armenia.
Cirsilus of Pharsalus and Medius of Larisa, men who accompanied Alexander on his campaign, say that Armenia was named after him; and they say that of those who accompanied Armenus, some settled in Acilisenē, which was formerly under the Sopheni, while others settled in Syspiritis, as far as Calachenē and Adiabenē, outside the Armenian borders.
They also say that the Armenian dress is Thessalian, such as the long tunics which they call 'Thessalian' in tragedies, and they gird them around their breasts, and wear cloaks, just as if the tragic poets had imitated the Thessalians.
For they indeed stood in need of some such supplementary adornment, and the Thessalians, wearing very long robes, naturally because they inhabited the northernmost and coldest regions of all the Greeks, provided the most suitable model for the attire of actors in their fictional representations.
They also say that the zeal for horsemanship is Thessalian, and this similarly in the case of both the Armenians and the Medes.
The expedition of Jason is also attested by the 'Jasonia', some of which the local rulers constructed in a manner similar to how Parmenion built the temple of Jason in Abdera.
They believe that the Araxes was named by those around Armenus, after its similarity to the Peneius, homonymously with it; for they say that the Peneius was also called Araxes because of its having dashed off Ossa from Olympus when it burst through the Tempe.
And they say that the Araxes in Armenia also, descending from the mountains, anciently spread out and formed a sea in the plains below, having no outlet, but that Jason, in imitation of the Tempe, made the cleft through which the water now rushes down into the Caspian Sea; and that because of this the Araxene plain was laid bare, through which the river happens to flow towards the cataract.
Now this account spoken about the river Araxes has some plausibility, but that of Herodotus has none at all; for he says that it flows from the Matianians and splits into forty rivers, separating the Scythians and the Bactrians; and Callisthenes also followed him.
It is also said that some of the Aenianians settled in Vitia, and others above the Armenians, above Mount Abus and Mount Nibarus (these are parts of the Taurus), of which Abus is near the road leading to Ecbatana past the temple of Baris.
They also say that some of the Thracians, those called Saraparae, meaning 'decapitators', settled above Armenia near the Guranii and the Medes, wild and disobedient mountaineers, scalpers and decapitators; for this is what 'Saraparae' means.
The story concerning Medea has also been told in the account of Media; so that from all these things they infer that both the Medes and the Armenians are in some way related to the Thessalians and to the descendants of Jason and Medea.
