§163.1Fr. 163
Διὰ τί χειμῶνος μᾶλλον ἢ θέρους τὰ τῶν ἁλιέων σήπεται δίκτυα;
Fr. 163 Why do the nets of fishermen rot in winter rather than in summer?
And yet, other things at least undergo this rather in the summer.
Is it because, as Theophrastus thinks, the heat, retreating and yielding to the cold, recoils upon itself and makes things in the depth of the sea warmer, just as in the earth?
For this reason, also, spring waters are warmer in the winter, and lakes and rivers steam more.
For the heat is shut up in the depth by the cold which has got the upper hand.
