1. §140.1Στρατηγοῦ — Genitive of possession or character modifying the noun θάνατον. Placed at the very beginning for emphasis, it stands in contrast with the subsequent οὐ πελταστοῦ τοῦ τυχόντος ("not that of any ordinary peltast").
2. §140.1θάνατον ἀποθνήκειν — Cognate accusative construction. The intransitive verb ἀποθνήσκω ("to die") takes the noun θάνατος ("death"), which is cognate in meaning, in the accusative case to express "to die a [certain] death."
3. §140.1τὸν στρατηγὸν — Accusative functioning as the subject of the infinitive ἀποθνήκειν in the accusative and infinitive construction governed by the impersonal verb δεῖ ("it is necessary").
