§2.26Ὕδατος μὲν οὖν ταῦτα λέγεται σημεῖα· ἀνέμου δὲ καὶ πνευμάτων τάδε.
These, then, are said to be the signs of rain; and the following are the signs of wind and breezes.
Ἀνατέλλων ὁ ἥλιος καυματίας κἂν μὴ ἀποστίλβῃ ἀνεμῶδες τὸ σημεῖον· καὶ ἐὰν κοῖλος φαίνηται ὁ ἥλιος ἀνέμου ἢ ὕδατος τὸ σημεῖον.
The rising sun, if it is scorching hot even though it does not shine brightly, is a sign of wind; and if the sun appears hollow, it is a sign of wind or rain.
Καὶ ἐὰν ἐπὶ πολλὰς ἡμέρας καυματίας αὐχμοὺς καὶ ἀνέμους πολυχρονίους σημαίνει.
And if it is scorching hot for many days, it indicates long-lasting droughts and winds.
Ἐὰν αἱ ἀκτῖνες αἱ μὲν πρὸς βορρᾶν αἱ δὲ πρὸς νότον σχίζωνται τούτου μέσου ὄντος κατʼ ὄρθρον κοινὸν ὕδατος καὶ ἀνέμου σημεῖόν ἐστιν.
If at dawn, while the sun is in the middle, the rays split, some towards the north and others towards the south, it is a common sign of rain and wind.
§2.27Ἔστι δὲ σημεῖα ἐν ἡλίῳ καὶ σελήνῃ τὰ μὲν μέλανα ὕδατος τὰ δʼ ἐρυθρὰ πνεύματος.
There are signs also in the sun and moon: dark ones indicate rain, and red ones wind.
Ἐὰν δὲ ὁ μεὶς βορείου ὄντος ὀρθὸς εἱστήκῃ ζέφυροι εἰώθασιν ἐπιπνεῖν καὶ ὁ μὴν χειμερινὸς διατελεῖ.
If, when the north wind is blowing, the new moon stands upright, west winds are accustomed to blow and the month continues to be wintry.
Ὅταν μὲν ἡ κεραία ἡ ἄνω τοῦ μηνὸς ἐπικύπτῃ βόρειος ὁ μείς· ὅταν δʼ ἡ κάτωθεν νότιος· ἐὰν δʼ ὀρθὸς καὶ μὴ καλῶς ἐγκεκλιμένος μέχρι τετράδος καὶ εὔκυκλος εἴωθε χειμάζειν μέχρι διχομηνίας.
When the upper horn of the moon bends down, the month is northern; but when the lower one bends down, it is southern; and if it stands upright and is not well inclined up to the fourth day, and is well-rounded, it is accustomed to be stormy until the full moon.
Σημαίνει ζοφώδης μὲν ὢν ὕδωρ πυρώδης δὲ πνεῦμα.
If it is gloomy, it indicates rain; but if fiery, wind.
§2.28Αἴθυιαι καὶ νῆτται καὶ ἄγριαι καὶ τιθασσαὶ ὕδωρ μὲν σημαίνουσι δυόμεναι, πτερυγίζουσαι δὲ ἄνεμον.
Divers, and ducks both wild and tame, indicate rain when they dive, but wind when they flap their wings.
Οἱ κέπφοι εὐδίας οὔσης ὅποι ἂν πέτωνται ἄνεμον προσημαίνουσι.
Petrels, when it is fair weather, in whichever direction they fly, foretell wind.
Στρουθοὶ χειμῶνος ἀφʼ ἑσπέρας θορυβοῦντες ἢ ἀνέμου μεταβολὴν σημαίνουσιν ἢ ὕδωρ ὑέτιον.
Sparrows chirping noisily in the evening in winter indicate either a change of wind or rainy water.
Ἐρωδιὸς ἀπὸ θαλάσσης πετόμενος καὶ βοῶν πνεύματος σημεῖόν ἐστι· καὶ ὅλως βοῶν μέγα ἀνεμώδης.
A heron flying from the sea and crying is a sign of wind; and generally when it cries loudly, it indicates wind.
§2.29Κύων κυλινδούμενος χαμαὶ μέγεθος ἀνέμου σημαίνει.
A dog rolling on the ground indicates a great wind.
Ἀράχνια πολλὰ φερόμενα πνεῦμα ἢ χεμῶνα σημαίνει.
Many spiderwebs carried along indicate wind or a storm.
Ἡ ἄμπωτις βόρειον πνεῦμα σημαίνει, πλημμύρα δὲ νότιον.
Ebb tide indicates a north wind, and flood tide a south wind.
Ἐὰν μὲν γὰρ ἐκ βορείων πλημμύρα ἥκῃ εἰς νότιον μεταβάλλει, ἐὰν δʼ ἐκ νοτίων ἄμπωτις γίνηται εἰς βόρειον μεταβάλλει.
For if a flood tide comes while the north wind is blowing, it changes to a south wind; but if an ebb tide occurs while the south wind is blowing, it changes to a north wind.
Θάλασσα οἰδοῦσα καὶ ἀκταὶ βοῶσαι καὶ αἰγιαλὸς ἠχῶν ἀνεμά̓ης.
A swelling sea, roaring cliffs, and a resounding beach indicate wind.
Καὶ ὁ μὲν βορέας λήγων ἐλάττων ὁ δὲ νότος ἀρχόμενος.
And the north wind is weaker when ceasing, and the south wind is weaker when beginning.
Παρήλιος ὁπόθεν ἂν ᾖ ὕδωρ ἢ ἀνέμον σημαίνει.
A mock sun indicates rain or wind from whichever direction it appears.
§2.30Ἡ πέμπτη καὶ δεκάτη ἀπὸ τροπῶν τῶν χειμερινῶν ὡς τὰ πολλὰ νότιος.
The fifteenth day after the winter solstice is usually southern.
Βορείων δὲ γινομένων ξηραίνει πάντα, νοτίων δὲ ὑγραίνει.
When north winds blow, they dry everything, but south winds moisten.
Ἐὰν δὲ νοτίων ὄντων ψοφῇ τι τῶν κεκολλημένων εἰς τὰ νότια σημαίνει τὴν μεταβολήν·
If, while south winds blow, glued objects make a sound, it indicates a change towards the south.
ἐὰν δὲ πόδες οἰδῶσι νοτία ἡ μεταβολή.
If feet swell, the change is to a south wind.
Τὸ δὲ αὐτὸ σημεῖον καὶ ἐκνεφίου.
The same is also a sign of a hurricane.
Καὶ ὀδαξῶν τὸν δεξιὸν ἐχῖνος ὁ χερσαῖος σημαντικόν· ποιεῖται δὲ δύο ὀπὰς ὅπου ἂν οἰκῇ, τὴν μὲν πρὸς βορρᾶν τὴν δὲ νοτόθεν· ὁποτέραν δʼ ἂν ἀποφράττῃ ἐντεῦθεν πνεῦμα σημαίνει, ἐὰν δʼ ἀμφοτέρας ἀνέμου μέγεθος.
And the land hedgehog scratching itself is significant; it makes two holes wherever it lives, one towards the north and the other towards the south, and from whichever direction it plugs up, thence it indicates wind, and if both, a great wind.
§2.31Ἐὰν ὄρος πρὸς βορρᾷ ἄνεμον προσημαίνει.
If a mountain towards the north [has a cloud], it foretells wind.
Ἐὰν ἐν θαλάττῃ ἐξαίφνης πνεύματος γαλήνη γίνηται μεταβολὴν πνεύματος ἢ ἐπίδοσιν.
If in the sea, while a wind is blowing, there is a sudden calm, it indicates a change of wind or its increase.
Ἐὰν ἄκραι μτέωροι φαίνονται ἢ καὶ νῆσοι ἐκ μιᾶς πλείους νοτίαν μεταβολὴν σημαίνει· γῆ τε μέλαινα ὑποφαινομένη βόρειον λευκὴ δὲ νότιον.
If high headlands appear, or even islands appear more than one from a single one, it indicates a change to the south; and land appearing dark indicates a north wind, but white a south wind.
Αἱ ἄλωνες περὶ τὴν σελήνην πνευματώδεις μᾶλλον ἢ περὶ ἥλιον· σημαίνουσι δὲ πνεῦμα ῥαγεῖσαι περὶ ἄμφω, καὶ ᾗ ἂν ῥαγῇ ταύτῃ πνεῦμα.
Halos around the moon are more windy than those around the sun; and they indicate wind when broken around both, and in whichever direction it is broken, thence comes the wind.
Ἐπινεφέλων ὅθεν ἂν ἀνατέλληται ἐντεῦθεν ἄνεμος.
When it is cloudy, from whichever direction clouds rise, thence comes the wind.
Αἱ κηλάδες νεφέλαι θέρους ἄνεμον σημαίνουσι.
Dappled clouds in summer indicate wind.
