and the natural philosophers speak about the winds, praising the northern winds more than the southern.
As for what kind of bodily condition in the parents would be of the greatest benefit to those being born, it must be spoken of with more attention in the discussion concerning the supervision of children, but it is sufficient to speak of it in outline even now.
For neither the condition of athletes is useful for civic well-being, nor for health and child-begetting, nor is the state of being under medical treatment and being too worn out by hard labor, but the middle condition between these.
Therefore, they must have their condition trained, and trained by labors that are not violent, nor directed toward only one thing, like the condition of athletes, but toward the actions of free people.
And these things must belong similarly to both men and women.
And pregnant women also must take care of their bodies, not being idle nor using a sparse diet.
And this is easy for the legislator to bring about by commanding them to make a certain walk every day for the worship of the gods who have received by lot the honor concerning childbirth.
On the other hand, it is fitting for them to pass their minds in a more relaxed manner, contrary to their bodies; for those being born appear to derive benefit from the mother who carries them, just as growing plants do from the earth.
Concerning the exposure and rearing of those who are born, let there be a law not to rear anything deformed; but if the order of customs prevents exposing any of those born on account of the multitude of children, a limit must be defined for the quantity of child-begetting, and if any have children through coupling contrary to these limits, before sensation and life are implanted, one must perform abortion; for what is holy and what is not will be defined by sensation and living.
And since the beginning of the age for a man and a woman has been defined, when they must begin their union, let it also be defined for how long a time it is fitting to serve with a view to child-begetting.
For the offspring of older people, just like those of younger ones, are born imperfect both in their bodies and in their minds, and those of the aged are weak; therefore, it should be according to the prime of the mind.
And this is in most people what some of the poets have said, who measure age by periods of seven years, around the time of fifty years.
So that having surpassed this age by four or five years, they must be released from generation for the public; and for the rest of the time, they must appear to make intercourse for the sake of health or some other such cause.
Concerning intercourse with another woman or another man, let it be simply not honorable to appear touching it in any way or manner, whenever one is and is addressed as a husband;
