§3.1#2φθιτοῦ (οὐδὲν γὰρ ὄνομα κοινὸν ἐπʼ ἀμφοῖν) αὔξησις καὶ φθίσις, τοῦ δὲ γενητοῦ καὶ φθαρτοῦ γένεσις καὶ φθορά, τοῦ δὲ φορητοῦ φορά.
...decreasable (for there is no common name for both) is increase and decrease, and of that which is generable and destructible, generation and destruction, and of that which is movable in place, locomotion.
ὅτι δὲ τοῦτο ἔστιν ἡ κίνησις, ἐντεῦθεν δῆλον.
That this is what motion is, is clear from what follows.
ὅταν γὰρ τὸ οἰκοδομητόν, ᾗ τοιοῦτον αὐτὸ λέγομεν εἶναι, ἐντελεχείᾳ ᾖ οἰκοδομεῖται, καὶ ἔστιν τοῦτο οἰκοδόμησις·
For when the buildable, in so far as we call it such, is in fulfillment and is being built, this is building.
ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ μάθησις καὶ ἰάτρευσις καὶ κύλισις καὶ ἅλσις καὶ ἅδρυνσις καὶ γήρανσις.
And similarly with learning, healing, rolling, jumping, ripening, and aging.
ἐπεὶ δʼ ἔνια ταὐτὰ καὶ δυνάμει καὶ ἐντελεχείᾳ ἐστίν, οὐχ ἅμα δὲ ἢ οὐ κατὰ τὸ αὐτό, ἀλλʼ οἶον θερμὸν μὲν ἐντελεχείᾳ ψυχρὸν δὲ δυνάμει, πολλὰ ἤδη ποιήσει καὶ πείσεται ὑπʼ ἀλλήλων· ἅπαν γὰρ ἔσται ἅμα ποιητικὸν καὶ παθητικόν.
And since some things are the same both in potentiality and in fulfillment, though not at the same time or not in the same respect—but rather, for instance, being hot in fulfillment and cold in potentiality—many things will already act and be acted upon by one another; for everything will be at once active and passive.
ὥστε καὶ τὸ κινοῦν φυσικῶς κινητόν· πᾶν γὰρ τὸ τοιοῦτον κινεῖ κινούμενον καὶ αὐτό.
Hence that which moves naturally is also movable; for everything of this sort moves while being moved itself as well.
δοκεῖ μὲν οὖν τισιν ἅπαν κινεῖσθαι τὸ κινοῦν, οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ περὶ τούτου μὲν ἐξ ἄλλων ἔσται δῆλον ὅπως ἔχει (ἔστι γάρ τι κινοῦν καὶ ἀκίνητον), ἡ δὲ τοῦ δυνάμει ὄντος 〈ἐντελέχεια〉, ὅταν ἐντελεχείᾳ ὄν ἐνεργῇ οὐχ ᾖ αὐτὸ ἀλλʼ ᾖ κινητόν, κίνησίς ἐστιν.
Now, it seems to some that everything that moves is moved, but nevertheless, as to this, it will be clear from other considerations how the matter stands (for there is something that moves and is itself unmoved), but the <fulfillment> of that which exists in potentiality, when, existing in fulfillment, it is active not as itself but as movable, is motion.
λέγω δὲ τὸ ὡδί.
What I mean is this.
ἔστι γᾲρ ὁ χαλκὸς δυνάμει ἀνδριάς, ἀλλʼ ὅμως οὐχ ἡ τοῦ χαλκοῦ ἐντελέχεια, ᾖ χαλκός, κίνησίς ἐστιν· οὐ γὰρ τὸ αὐτὸ τὸ χαλκῷ εἶναι καὶ δυνάμει τινί, ἐπεὶ εἰ ταὐτὸν ᾖν ἀπλῶς καὶ κατὰ τὸν λόγον, ᾖν ἂν ἡ τοῦ χαλκοῦ, ᾖ χαλκός, ἐντελέχεια κίνησις·
For bronze is potentially a statue, but nevertheless the fulfillment of bronze, as bronze, is not motion; for to be bronze is not the same as to be a certain potentiality, since if it were the same simply and in definition, the fulfillment of bronze, as bronze, would be motion.
οὐκ ἔστιν δὲ ταὐτόν, ὡς εἴρηται (δῆλον δʼ ἐπὶ τῶν ἐναντίων· τὸ μὲν γὰρ δύνασθαι ὑγιαίνειν καὶ δύνασθαι κάμνειν ἕτερον—καὶ γὰρ ἂν τὸ κάμνειν καὶ τὸ ὑγιαίνειν ταὐτὸν ᾖν— τὸ δὲ ὑποκείμενον καὶ τὸ ὑγιαῖνον καὶ τὸ νοσοῦν, εἴθ’ ὑγρότης εἴθʼ αἷμα, ταὐτὸν καὶ ἔν).
But it is not the same, as has been said (and this is clear in the case of contraries; for to be able to be healthy and to be able to be sick are different—otherwise, to be sick and to be healthy would be the same—while the substrate, that which is healthy and that which is sick, whether it is moisture or blood, is one and the same).
ἐπεὶ δʼ οὐ ταὺτόν, ὥσπερ οὐδὲ χρῶμα ταὐτὸν καὶ ὁρατόν, ἡ τοῦ δυνατοῦ, ᾖ δυνατόν, ἐντελέχεια φανερὸν ὅτι κίνησίς ἐστιν.
Since, then, they are not the same, just as color and the visible are not the same, it is manifest that the fulfillment of the potential, as potential, is motion.
ὅτι μὲν οὖν
ἐστιν αὕτη, καὶ ὅτι συμβαίνει τότε κιννεῖσθαι ὅταν ἡ ἐντελέχεια ᾖ αὐτή, καὶ οὔτε πρότερον οὔτε ὕστερον, δῆλον·
That motion, then, is this, and that it happens to move precisely when this fulfillment exists, and neither before nor after, is clear.
ἐνδέχεται γὰρ ἕκαστον ὁτὲ μὲν ἐνεργεῖν ὁτὲ δὲ μή, οιἶον τὸ οἰκοδομητόν, καὶ ἡ τοῦ οἰκοδομητοῦ ἐνέργεια, οἰκοδομητόν, οἰκοδόμησίς ἐστιν (ἢ γὰρ οἰκοδόμησις ἡ ἐνέργεια ἢ ἡ οἰκία· ἀλλʼ ὅταν οἰκία ᾖ, οὐκέτʼ οἰκοδομητὸν ἔστιν· οἰκοδομεῖται δὲ τὸ οἰκοδομητόν· ἀνάγκη οὖν οἰκοδόμησιν τὴν ἐνέργειαν εἶναι)· ἡ δʼ οἰκοδόμησις κίνησίς τις.
For it is possible for each thing sometimes to be active and sometimes not, e.g. the buildable, and the activity of the buildable, as buildable, is building (for either the activity is building or it is the house; but when the house exists, there is no longer the buildable; and it is the buildable that is being built; therefore, the activity must be building); and building is a certain motion.
ἀλλὰ μὴν ὁ αὐτὸς ἐφαρμόσει λόγος καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν ἄλλων κινήσεων.
And indeed, the same account will apply to the other motions as well.
