Antimenes the Rhodian, serving as Alexander's financial administrator in Babylon, raised funds as follows.
There being an old law in Babylonia that a tenth was to be levied on imports, which no one had enforced, he, watching all the satraps who were expected to return, and the soldiers, and not a few envoys and hired artisans and others who were bringing in goods or travelling privately, as well as many gifts being brought up, collected the tenth according to the established law.
And again, raising money from the slaves in the camp, he ordered anyone who wished to register them at whatever price they chose, and they were to pay eight drachmas a year; but if a slave ran away, they would recover the price at which they had registered.
Thus, many slaves being registered, a large sum of money was collected.
And if any slave ran away, he ordered the satrap of the territory in which the camp was situated to recover the slave or pay the price to the owner.
Ophelas the Olynthian, having appointed a superintendent for the Athribite nomos, when the nomarchs of that district approached him and said they wished to pay much more tax themselves, and requested him to remove the current superintendent, he asked them if they would be able to pay what they promised. When they agreed, he left the superintendent in his place, but ordered that the taxes they had themselves offered should be collected.
Thus he seemed neither to disgrace the one he had appointed, nor to impose more taxes on them than they themselves proposed, but he himself received many times more money.
Pythocles the Athenian advised the Athenians that the state should take over the lead from Laurium from private individuals at the price they were selling it, namely two drachmas, and then, having themselves set the price at six drachmas, sell it in this manner.
Chabrias, when crews had been enrolled for one hundred and twenty ships, and Tachos had need of only sixty, ordered those from the sixty remaining ships to provide two months' rations for those who were sailing, or else sail themselves.
Wishing to remain on their own lands, they gave what he ordered.
Antimenes also ordered the satraps to replenish the stores along the royal roads according to the law of the country; and whenever an army or any other crowd passed through without the king, he sent a representative from himself and sold the contents of the stores.
Cleomenes, when the new moon was approaching and it was necessary to give rations to the soldiers, sailed down on purpose; and when the month was well advanced, he sailed up and distributed the rations, and then, in the following month, he waited until the next new moon.
The soldiers, because they had recently received their rations, remained quiet, but he, by shifting the payment by one month throughout the year, always deducted one month's pay.
Stabelbius, the ruler of the Mysians, called the officers together and told them that he had no need of the common soldiers, but only of the officers; and whenever he needed soldiers, he would give money to each of them and send them to recruit mercenaries, and the pay which had to be given to the soldiers, he would gladly give to the officers instead.
He therefore ordered them to send away their respective companies from the country.
The officers, supposing that they would make a profit, sent the soldiers away as he ordered.
After a short interval, having called them together, he declared that neither is a flute-player of any use without a chorus, nor are officers of any use without common soldiers; he therefore ordered them to depart from the country.
Dionysius, going around the temples, if he saw a golden or silver table placed before an image, would order to pour a libation to the Good Daimon and then have it removed; and whenever any of the statues held out a cup in its hand, saying 'I accept it,' he would order it to be taken away.
He also stripped the golden garments and crowns from the statues, claiming that he would give them lighter and sweeter-scented ones; then he put white garments and crowns of white violets on them.
