§3.2#2Σχίζεται δ’ αὐτῶν ἄκρα ἑκατέρα, ἡ μὲν ἐπὶ τὸν μέγαν δάκτυλον, ἡ δ’ ἐπὶ τὸν ταρσόν· ἀπὸ δὲ τούτων λεπταὶ καὶ πολύοζοι ἐπὶ τὴν ἄλλην χεῖρα καὶ δακτύλους.
The extremity of each of these veins splits, one part going to the thumb and the other to the palm; and from these, fine and highly branched veins extend to the rest of the hand and the fingers.
Ἕτεραι δὲ λεπτότεραι ἀπὸ τῶν πρώτων φλεβῶν τείνουσιν, ἀπὸ μὲν τῆς δεξιᾶς εἰς τὸ ἧπαρ, ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς ἀριστερᾶς εἰς τὸν σπλῆνα καὶ τοὺς νεφρούς.
Other, finer veins extend from the primary veins: from the right one to the liver, and from the left one to the spleen and the kidneys.
Αἱ δὲ εἰς τὰ σκέλη τείνουσαι σχίζονται κατὰ τὴν πρόσφυσιν, καὶ διὰ παντὸς τοῦ μηροῦ τείνουσιν.
Those extending to the legs split at the junction and run through the whole thigh.
Ἡ δὲ μεγίστη αὐτῶν ὄπισθεν τείνει τοῦ μηροῦ, καὶ ἐκφαίνεται παχεῖα· ἑτέρα δὲ εἴσω τοῦ μηροῦ, μικρὸν ἧττον παχεῖα ἐκείνης.
The largest of them runs along the back of the thigh and appears thick; another runs along the inside of the thigh, being slightly less thick than the former.
Ἔπειτα παρὰ τὸ γόνυ τείνουσιν εἰς τὴν κνήμην τε καὶ τὸν πόδα, καθάπερ καὶ εἰς τὰς χεῖρας· καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν ταρσὸν τοῦ ποδὸς καθήκουσι, καὶ ἐντεῦθεν ἐπὶ τοὺς δακτύλους διατείνουσιν.
Then they extend past the knee into the shin and the foot, just as they do into the hands; and they descend to the tarsus of the foot, and from there extend to the toes.
Σχίζονται δὲ καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν κοιλίαν καὶ τὸ πλευρὸν πολλαὶ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν καὶ λεπταὶ φλέβες.
Many fine veins also branch off from them to the belly and the flank.
Αἱ δ’ εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν τείνουσαι διὰ τῶν σφαγῶν φαίνονται ἐν τῷ αὐχένι μεγάλαι· ἀφ’ ἑκατέρας δ’ αὐτῶν, ᾗ τελευτᾷ, σχίζονται εἰς τὴν κεφαλὴν πολλαί, αἱ μὲν ἐκ τῶν δεξιῶν εἰς τὰ ἀριστερά, αἱ δ’ ἐκ τῶν ἀριστερῶν εἰς τὰ δεξιά· τελευτῶσι δὲ παρὰ τὸ οὖς ἑκάτεραι.
Those extending to the head through the jugulars appear large in the neck; and from each of them, where it ends, many veins branch into the head, some from the right to the left, and others from the left to the right; and both end near the ear.
Ἔστι δ’ ἑτέρα φλὲψ ἐν τῷ τραχήλῳ παρὰ τὴν μεγάλην ἑκατέρωθεν, ἐλάττων ἐκείνης ὀλίγον, εἰς ἣν αἱ πλεῖσται ἐκ τῆς κεφαλῆς συνέχουσιν αὐτῆς· καὶ αὗται τείνουσι διὰ τῶν σφαγῶν εἴσω, καὶ ἀπ’ αὐτῶν ἑκατέρας ὑπὸ τὴν ὠμοπλάτην τείνουσι καὶ εἰς τὰς χεῖρας.
There is another vein in the throat on each side along the large one, slightly smaller than it, into which most of those from the head itself converge; these also extend inward through the jugulars, and from each of them veins extend under the shoulder-blade and into the hands.
Καὶ φαίνονται παρά τε τὴν σπληνῖτιν καὶ τὴν ἡπατῖτιν ἕτεραι ὀλίγον ἐλάττους, ἃς ἀποσχῶσιν, ὅταν τι ὑπὸ τὸ δέρμα λυπῇ· ἂν δέ τι περὶ τὴν κοιλίαν, τὴν ἡπατῖτιν καὶ τὴν σπληνῖτιν.
And other slightly smaller veins appear beside both the splenitis and the hepatitis; people open these when there is some trouble under the skin, but if the trouble is around the belly, they open the hepatitis and the splenitis.
Τείνουσι δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ τοὺς μαστοὺς ἀπὸ τούτων ἕτεραι.
Other veins also extend from these under the breasts.
Ἕτεραι δ’ εἰσὶν αἱ ἀπὸ ἑκατέρας τείνουσαι διὰ τοῦ νωτιαίου μυελοῦ εἰς τοὺς ὄρχεις, λεπταί.
There are others, fine ones, extending from each vein through the spinal cord to the testicles.
Ἕτεραι δ’ ὑπὸ τὸ δέρμα καὶ διὰ τῆς σαρκὸς τείνουσιν εἰς τοὺς νεφρούς, καὶ τελευτῶσιν εἰς τοὺς ὄρχεις τοῖς ἀνδράσι, ταῖς δὲ γυναιξὶν εἰς τὰς ὑστέρας.
Others extend under the skin and through the flesh to the kidneys, and end in the testicles in men, and in the uterus in women.
Αἱ δὲ φλέβες αἱ μὲν πρῶται ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας εὐρύτεραί εἰσιν, ἔπειτα λεπτότεραι γίγνονται, ἕως ἂν μεταβάλωσιν ἐκ τῶν δεξιῶν εἰς τὰ ἀριστερὰ καὶ ἐκ τούτων εἰς τὰ δεξιά· αὗται δὲ σπερματίτιδες καλοῦνται.
The veins that first come from the belly are wider, but then they become finer until they cross over from the right to the left and from the left to the right; and these are called spermatic veins.
Τὸ δ’ αἷμα τὸ μὲν παχύτατον ὑπὸ τῶν σαρκῶν ἐγγίνεται· ὑπερβάλλον δὲ εἰς τοὺς τόπους τούτους λεπτὸν καὶ θερμὸν καὶ ἀφρῶδες γίνεται.
The thickest blood is formed by the flesh; but when it overflows into these places, it becomes thin, warm, and frothy.
