§3.11#2Ἡ μὲν οὖν κατὰ κορυφὴν λειότης φαλακρότης καλεῖται, ἡ δὲ κατὰ τὰς ὀφρῦς ἀναφαλαντίασις· οὐδέτερον δὲ τούτων συμβαίνει οὐδενὶ πρὶν ἢ ἀφροδισιάζειν ἄρξηται.
Now, smoothness on the crown of the head is called baldness, and that above the eyebrows is called forehead-baldness; and neither of these occurs to anyone before they begin to engage in sexual intercourse.
Οὐ γίνεται δ’ οὔτε παῖς φαλακρὸς οὔτε γυνὴ οὔτε οἱ ἐκτετμημένοι· ἀλλ’ ἐὰν μὲν ἐκτμηθῇ πρὸ ἥβης, οὐ φύονται αἱ ὑστερογενεῖς, ἐὰν δ’ ὕστερον, αὗται μόναι ἐκρέουσι, πλὴν τῆς ἥβης.
Neither a child, nor a woman, nor castrated men become bald; but if a man is castrated before puberty, the late-born hairs do not grow, and if afterwards, these alone shed, except for those on the pubes.
Γυνὴ δὲ τὰς ἐπὶ τῷ γενείῳ οὐ φύει τρίχας· πλὴν ἐνίαις γίγνονται ὀλίγαι, ὅταν τὰ καταμήνιᾳ στῇ, καὶ οἷον ἐν Καρίᾳ ταῖς ἱερείαις, ὃ δοκεῖ συμβαίνειν σημεῖον τῶν μελλόντων.
A woman does not grow hair on her chin; except that a few grow on some women when their menstruation ceases, as indeed happens to the priestesses in Caria, which is thought to occur as a sign of future events.
Αἱ δ’ ἄλλαι γίγνονται μέν, ἐλάττους δέ.
The other hairs grow indeed, but are fewer.
Γίγνονται δὲ καὶ ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες ἐκ γενετῆς ἐνδεεῖς τῶν ὑστερογενῶν τριχῶν ἅμα καὶ ἄγονοι, ὅσοιπερ ἂν καὶ ἥβης στερηθῶσιν.
And both men and women are born lacking late-born hairs and at the same time sterile, namely as many as are also deprived of pubic hair.
Αἱ μὲν οὖν ἄλλαι τρίχες αὔξονται κατὰ λόγον ἢ πλέον ἢ ἔλαττον, μάλιστα μὲν αἱ ἐν τῇ κεφαλῇ, εἶτα πώγωνι, καὶ οἱ λεπτότριχοι μάλιστα.
Now, the other hairs grow in proportion, either more or less, and most of all those on the head, then those of the beard, and especially in those with fine hair.
Δασύνονται δέ τισι καὶ αἱ ὀφρύες γινομένοις πρεσβυτέροις, οὕτως ὥστ’ ἀποκείρεσθαι, διὰ τὸ ἐπὶ συμφύσει ὀστῶν κεῖσθαι, ἃ γηρασκόντων διιστάμενα διίησι πλείω ὑγρότητα.
And in some, the eyebrows also become bushy as they grow older, so much so that they have to be clipped, because they lie on the suture of the bones, which, parting as they grow old, let pass more moisture.
Αἱ δ’ ἐν ταῖς βλεφαρίσιν οὐκ αὔξονται, ῥέουσι δέ, ὅταν ἀφροδισιάζειν ἄρξωνται, καὶ μᾶλλον τοῖς μᾶλλον ἀφροδισιαστικοῖς· πολιοῦνται δὲ βραδύτατα αὗται.
But those on the eyelashes do not grow, but they shed when they begin to engage in sexual intercourse, and more so in those who are more libidinous; and these become grey slowest of all.
Ἐκτιλλόμεναι δ’ αἱ τρίχες μέχρι τῆς ἀκμῆς ἀναφύονται, εἶτα οὐκέτι.
Hairs that are plucked out grow back up to the prime of life, but after that no longer.
Ἔχει δὲ πᾶσα θρὶξ ὑγρότητα πρὸς τῇ ῥίζῃ γλίσχραν, καὶ ἕλκει εὐθὺς ἐκτιλθεῖσα τὰ κοῦφα θιγγάνουσα.
Every hair has a sticky moisture at its root, and when plucked out, it immediately attracts light things that it touches.
Ὅσα δὲ ποικίλα τῶν ζῴων κατὰ τὰς τρίχας, τούτοις καὶ ἐν τῷ δέρματι προϋπάρχει ἡ ποικιλία καὶ ἐν τῷ τῆς γλώττης δέρματι.
And whatever animals are variegated in their hair, in these the variegation pre-exists also in the skin and in the skin of the tongue.
Περὶ δὲ τὸ γένειον τοῖς μὲν συμβαίνει καὶ τὴν ὑπήνην καὶ τὸ γένειον δασὺ ἔχειν, τοῖς δὲ ταῦτα μὲν λεῖα τὰς σιαγόνας δὲ δασείας· ἧττον δὲ γίγνονται φαλακροὶ οἱ μαδιγένειοι.
In regard to the chin, it happens to some to have both the mustache and the beard bushy, but to others to have these smooth while the cheeks are bushy; and those with smooth chins are less subject to baldness.
Αὔξονται δ’ αἱ τρίχες ἔν τε νόσοις τισίν, οἷον ἐν ταῖς φθίσεσι μᾶλλον, καὶ ἐν γήρᾳ καὶ τεθνεώτων, καὶ σκληρότεραι γίγνονται ἀντὶ μαλακῶν· τὰ δ’ αὐτὰ ταῦτα συμβαίνει καὶ περὶ τοὺς ὄνυχας.
Hairs grow also in certain diseases, for instance more in phthisis, and in old age, and on the dead, and they become harder instead of soft; and these same things happen also in regard to the claws.
Ῥέουσι δὲ μᾶλλον αἱ τρίχες τοῖς ἀφροδισιαστικοῖς αἱ συγγενεῖς· αἱ δ’ ὑστερογενεῖς γίνονται θᾶττον.
The congenital hairs shed more in libidinous persons; but the late-born hairs arise more quickly.
Οἱ δ’ ἰξίαν ἔχοντες ἧττον φαλακροῦνται, κἂν ὄντες φαλακροὶ λάβωσιν, ἔνιοι δασύνονται.
Those who have the skin-disease called ixias are less subject to baldness, and if they catch it when already bald, some grow bushy hair.
Οὐκ αὐξάνεται δὲ θρὶξ ἀποτμηθεῖσα, ἀλλὰ κάτωθεν ἀναφυομένη γίνεται μείζων.
A hair does not grow when cut off, but becomes larger by growing up from below.
Καὶ αἱ λεπίδες δὲ τοῖς ἰχθύσι σκληρότεραι γίνονται καὶ παχύτεραι, τοῖς δὲ λεπτυνομένοις καὶ τοῖς γηράσκουσι σκληρότεραι.
And the scales in fish become harder and thicker, and in those that are wasting away and those that are growing old they become harder.
Καὶ τῶν τετραπόδων δὲ γινομένων πρεσβυτέρων τῶν μὲν αἱ τρίχες τῶν δὲ τὰ ἔρια βαθύτερα μὲν γίνεται, ἐλάττω δὲ τῷ πλήθει· καὶ τῶν μὲν αἱ ὁπλαὶ τῶν δ’ αἱ χηλαὶ γίνονται γηρασκόντων μείζους, καὶ τὰ ῥύγχη τῶν ὀρνίθων.
And as quadrupeds grow older, in some the hair and in others the wool becomes longer, but fewer in number; and in some the hooves and in others the claws become larger as they grow old, and the beaks of birds.
Αὔξονται δὲ καὶ αἱ χηλαί, ὥσπερ καὶ οἱ ὄνυχες.
The claws also grow, just like nails.
