9 From these things it is clear that the assertion that a harmony is produced when they move, because the sounds they make are concordant, is gracefully and extraordinarily said by those who say it, but indeed the truth is not so.
For it seems to some to be necessary that a sound is produced when bodies of such size move, since even things among us, which neither have equal bulk nor move with such speed [make a sound]; and that when the sun and the moon, and further, stars so great in number and size move with a motion of such speed, it is impossible that a sound not of some immense magnitude should be produced.
Assuming these things, and that their speeds from their distances have the ratios of concordant intervals, they say that a harmonious voice is produced when the stars move in a circle.
But since it seems unreasonable that we do not hear this voice together, they say that the cause of this is that the sound exists immediately when they are born, so that it is not distinct against the opposite silence; for the distinction between voice and silence is against each other, so that just as to coppersmiths through habituation nothing seems to make a difference, the same thing happens to human beings.
These things indeed, just as was said before, are spoken tunefully and musically, but it is impossible for it to be in this manner.
For not only is it strange to hear nothing, about which they attempt to solve the cause, but also to suffer nothing without perception.
For excessive sounds shatter even the bulks of inanimate bodies, as for example that of thunder splits stones and the strongest of bodies.
But when so many things move, and the sound penetrates in proportion to the moving magnitude, a magnitude many times greater must necessarily both arrive here and the strength of the violence must be immense.
But reasonably we neither hear nor do bodies appear to suffer any violent affection, because of their not making a sound; and at the same time the cause of these things is clear, and is a testimony to the arguments spoken by us, that they are true; for the very thing that was puzzled over and made the Pythagoreans say that a harmony of the moving things is produced is a proof for us.
For as many things as move by themselves make a sound and an impact; but as many things as are bound in or exist in a moving thing, just as the parts in a ship, cannot make a sound, nor again can the ship, if it is carried in a river.
And yet it would be possible to say the same arguments, how strange it is if the mast and the stern of such a ship, being carried along, do not make a great sound, or again the ship itself when moving.
But that which moves in what is not moving makes a sound; but that which is continuous in what is moving and not making an impact cannot make a sound.
So here it must be said that if the bodies of these moved, whether in a mass of air poured out through the whole universe or of fire, as everyone says, they would necessarily make a sound extraordinary in magnitude, and this being produced, it would both arrive here and shatter [everything].
So since this is not seen to happen, none of them would move with either an animate or a violent motion, as if nature foreseeing what was going to be, because if the motion did not have this manner, nothing of the things about this place here would be in a similar state.
That the stars, therefore, are spherical and that they do not move by themselves, has been said.
