§9.65.1ἔπειτʼ Αἰκανῶν τε καὶ Οὐολούσκων ἑτέρα δύναμις καλὸν ὑπολαμβάνουσα καιρὸν ἔχειν προνομεῦσαι τὴν Ῥωμαίων γῆν, ἐξεστρατευμένης αὐτῶν τῆς κρατίστης δυνάμεως, ἐξῆλθε νυκτός· καὶ ἐμβαλοῦσα εἰς τὴν προσωτάτω χώραν, ἔνθα τοῖς γεωργοῖς δέος οὐδὲν εἶναι ἐδόκει, πολλῶν γίνονται χρημάτων καὶ §9.65.2σωμάτων ἐγκρατεῖς.
Then another force of the Aequians and Volscians, thinking they had a favorable opportunity to plunder the Roman territory since their strongest force had taken the field, set out by night; and invading the furthest part of the country, where the farmers felt no fear, they became masters of much property and many captives.
οὐ μὴν καλάς γʼ οὐδʼ εὐτυχεῖς τὰς ἐσχάτας ἔσχον ἐκεῖθεν ἀπαλλαγάς.
However, they did not make a fine or fortunate final departure from there.
ὁ γὰρ ἕτερος τῶν ὑπάτων Ποστόμιος ἄγων τὴν συναχθεῖσαν ἐπικουρίαν τοῖς ἐν τῷ χάρακι πολεμουμένοις, ὡς ἔμαθε τὰ γινόμενα ὑπὸ τῶν πολεμίων, ἐπιφαίνεται αὐτοῖς ἐκ τοῦ ἀνελπίστου.
For Postumius, the other of the consuls, leading the reinforcement that had been assembled for those besieged in the camp, when he learned of the enemy's actions, appeared to them unexpectedly.
§9.65.3οἱ δʼ οὔτε κατεπλάγησαν οὔτʼ ἔδεισαν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἔφοδον, ἀλλʼ ἀποθέμενοι σχολῇ τὰς ἀποσκευὰς καὶ τὰ λάφυρα εἰς ἓν χωρίον ἐχυρὸν καὶ φυλακὴν τὴν ἀρκοῦσαν ἐπὶ τούτοις καταλιπόντες οἱ λοιποὶ συντεταγμένοι χωροῦσι τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις ὁμόσε·
But they were neither terrified nor did they fear his attack; instead, leisurely depositing their baggage and booty in a secure place, and leaving a sufficient guard over them, the rest drew up in order and advanced to close quarters with the Romans.
καὶ συμπεσόντες ἄξια λόγου ἔργα ἀπεδείκνυντʼ ὀλίγοι μὲν πρὸς πολλοὺς ἀγωνιζόμενοι — συνέρρεον γὰρ ἐκ τῶν ἀγρῶν ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς συχνοὶ ἤδη διεσκεδασμένοι — ψιλῇ ὁπλίσει πρὸς ἄνδρας ὅλα τὰ σώματα ἔχοντας ἐν φυλακῇ ἐποίησάν τε πολλοὺς τῶν Ῥωμαίων νεκροὺς καὶ μικροῦ ἐδέησαν ἐν ἀλλοτρίᾳ γῇ καταληφθέντες τρόπαια τῶν ἐλθόντων ἐπὶ σφᾶς αὐτοὺς ἀναστῆσαι.
Clashing with them, they performed deeds worthy of mention, fighting few against many—for many Romans who had already dispersed came flocking from the fields against them—and with light armor against men who had their whole bodies protected, they killed many of the Romans and came near, though caught in a foreign land, to erecting trophies over those who had come against them.
§9.65.4ἀλλʼ ὅ γʼ ὕπατος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ Ῥωμαίων ἱππεῖς ἐπίλεκτοι, ἀχαλινώτοις ἐπελάσαντες τοῖς ἵπποις κατὰ τὸ καρτερώτατόν τε καὶ ἄριστα μαχόμενον αὐτῶν μέρος, διασπῶσι τὴν τάξιν καὶ καταβάλλουσι συχνούς.
But the consul and the elite Roman cavalry with him, charging with unbridled horses against the strongest and best-fighting part of them, broke their line and struck down many.
διαφθαρέντων δὲ τῶν προμάχων καὶ ἡ λοιπὴ δύναμις ἀποτραπεῖσα ἐνέκλινεν εἰς φυγήν, οἵ τε φυλάττοντες τὰς ἀποσκευὰς μεθέμενοι αὐτῶν ἀπιόντες ᾤχοντο ἀνὰ τὰ πλησίον ὄρη.
When their front-rank fighters had been destroyed, the rest of the force also turned and fled, and those guarding the baggage, abandoning it, went away to the neighboring mountains.
κατʼ αὐτὸν μὲν οὖν τὸν ἀγῶνα ὀλίγοι τινὲς αὐτῶν διεφθάρησαν, ἐν δὲ τῇ φυγῇ πάνυ πολλοί, χώρας τʼ ἄπειροι ὄντες καὶ ὑπὸ τῆς Ῥωμαίων ἵππου διωκόμενοι.
In the battle itself, then, only a few of them were killed, but in the flight very many, being both unacquainted with the country and pursued by the Roman cavalry.
