And not long after, it seemed good to the Romans to levy armies and to send out both the consuls, against the Aequi and the Volsci.
For great forces from both nations were reported to have gone out and to be plundering the allies of the Romans.
And when the forces had been prepared with speed, Quinctius went away to wage war against the Aequi, and Appius against the Volsci, having distributed their commands by lot.
And it happened that each of the consuls experienced what was natural.
For the army assigned to Quinctius, welcoming the kindness and moderation of the man, was eager for all things commanded, and for the most part of its own accord underwent dangers, procuring glory and honor for their commander; and it traversed much of the territory of the Aequi, plundering while the enemy did not dare to come to close quarters, from which it acquired much booty and great spoils.
And having spent not a long time in the enemy's country, it was present in the city, free from harm, bringing back their commander rendered illustrious by his deeds.
But the force that went out with Appius, out of hatred toward him, disregarded many of their ancestral customs.
For both in other respects they continued to act shiftlessly throughout the whole campaign and to disregard their commander, and when it was necessary to fight the army of the Volsci, though drawn up in battle array by their officers, they did not deign to come to close quarters with the enemy; but both their centurions and their front-rank men, some throwing away their standards and others abandoning the ranks, fled to the rampart.
And if the enemy, wondering at the unexpectedness of their flight and fearing lest there might be some ambush, had not turned back from further pursuit, the greater part of the Romans would have been destroyed.
And they did this out of envy of their commander, so that the man, having achieved a noble exploit, might not be made illustrious by a triumph and other honors.
And on the following day, while the consul was partly censuring them for their inglorious flight, partly urging them to undo a most shameful deed by a noble contest, and partly threatening that, unless they stood fast in the face of dangers, he would employ the laws, they persisted in disobedience and clamor, and ordered him to lead them away from the enemy's country on the grounds that they were no longer able to hold out because of wounds; for many of them bound up their healthy limbs as if they were wounded; so that Appius was forced to lead the army back from the enemy's country, and the Volscians, following them as they departed, killed many of them.
And when they were in friendly territory, the consul, having assembled them and reproached them much, said he would use the punishment prescribed against deserters.
And although the lieutenants and the other officers earnestly entreated him to show moderation, and not to add disaster upon disaster to the city, making no account of any of them, he enforced the punishment.
And after this, both the centurions whose companies had fled, and the defenders of the standards who had lost their standards, some were beheaded with an axe, and others, beaten with clubs, were put to death; and from the rest of the multitude, one man from every ten, chosen by lot, died before the others.
This is the ancestral punishment among the Romans for those who abandon their ranks or surrender their standards.
And after this, the general himself being hated, and bringing with him what still remained of the army, dejected and disgraced, returned to his native land, as the elections were at hand.
