The consul, when he had repelled the danger, went again to assist those in the plain.
This battle is said to have been the greatest of those that had occurred before it for the Romans, in the number of men, the length of time, and the rapid change of fortune.
For of the Romans themselves from the city, the strongest and select flower consisted of about twenty thousand infantry, and of the cavalry organized in the four legions, about one thousand two hundred, while there was another force of the same size of colonists and allies.
And the time of the struggle was prolonged, having begun a little before noon until the setting of the sun.
The course of fortune remained for a long time balancing this way and that with victories and defeats; and there occurred the death of a consul, and of a legate who had twice been consul, and of many other commanders, centurions, and captains, as many as never before.
However, the victory in the struggle seemed to have fallen to the Romans for no other reason than that on the following night the Tyrrhenians, abandoning their camp, retreated.
On the next day, the Romans, turning to the plunder of the camp abandoned by the Tyrrhenians and having buried their own dead, departed to their own camp.
Having held an assembly there, they distributed the rewards of valor to those who had fought brilliantly: first to Caeso Fabius, the brother of the consul, who had displayed great and admirable deeds; second to Siccius, who had succeeded in recovering the camp; third to Marcus Flavoleius, the commander of the legion, both on account of his oath and his strength in the face of dangers.
Having done these things and having remained for a few days at the camp, since none of the enemy came out to fight, they departed for home.
Although everyone in the city, since the greatest struggle had received the finest end, wished to award the triumphal honor of victory to the surviving consul, the consul refused their favor, saying that it was neither holy nor lawful to march in procession and wear a crown because of the death of a brother and the loss of a colleague; and having laid down his standards and dismissed the soldiers to their homes, he resigned his consulship on oath, when two months were still remaining for the annual term, being unable to perform the duties of his office any longer.
For he was suffering from a dreadful wound and was confined to his bed.
