§8.84.1διακληρωσαμένων δὲ τῶν ὑπάτων τὰς δυνάμεις, ὡς ἔστιν αὐτοῖς ἔθος, τὸ μὲν ἐπικουρεῖν μέλλον τοῖς συμμάχοις στράτευμα Καίσων Φάβιος παρέλαβε, θάτερον δὲ Λεύκιος ἔχων ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀντιατῶν ἦγε πόλιν.
When the consuls had distributed the forces by lot, as is their custom, Kaeso Fabius took command of the army that was to aid the allies, while Lucius, having the other, led it against the city of the Antiatates.
γενόμενος δὲ πλησίον τῶν ὁρίων καὶ κατιδὼν τὰς τῶν πολεμίων δυνάμεις, τότε μὲν ἀντικατεστρατοπέδευσεν ἐπὶ λόφου, ταῖς δʼ ἑξῆς ἡμέραις ἐξιόντων εἰς τὸ πεδίον τῶν πολεμίων θαμινὰ καὶ προκαλουμένων εἰς μάχην, ἡνίκα τὸν οἰκεῖον ἔχειν καιρὸν ὑπελάμβανεν, ἐξῆγε τὰς δυνάμεις·
Having arrived near the borders and descried the forces of the enemy, for the time being indeed he encamped opposite them on a hill; but in the following days, when the enemy frequently went out into the plain and challenged them to battle, when he supposed he had a suitable opportunity, he led out his forces.
καὶ πρὶν εἰς χεῖρας ἐλθεῖν παρακλήσει τε πολλῇ καὶ ἐπικελεύσει χρησάμενος, ἐκέλευσε σημαίνειν τὸ πολεμικόν· καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται τὸ σύνηθες ἀλαλάξαντες ἀθρόοι κατὰ σπείρας τε καὶ κατὰ λόχους συνέβαλλον.
And before they came to close quarters, having used much exhortation and encouragement, he ordered the trumpet to sound the charge; and the soldiers, having raised their customary battle-cry, fell upon them in a body, by maniples and centuries.
§8.84.2ὡς δὲ τὰς λόγχας καὶ τὰ σαυνία καὶ ὅσα εἶχον ἑκηβόλα ἐξανάλωσαν, σπασάμενοι τὰ ξίφη συρράττουσιν ἀλλήλοις ἴσῃ τόλμῃ τε καὶ ἐπιθυμίᾳ τοῦ ἀγῶνος ἑκάτεροι χρώμενοι·
When they had spent their spears, javelins, and whatever missile weapons they had, drawing their swords they clashed with one another, both sides employing equal daring and eagerness for the contest.
ἦν τε, ὡς καὶ πρότερον ἔφην, παραπλήσιος αὐτοῖς ὁ τοῦ ἀγῶνος τρόπος, καὶ οὔτε ἡ σοφία καὶ ἡ ἐμπειρία Ῥωμαίων περὶ τὰς μάχας, ᾗ χρώμενοι τὰ πολλὰ ἐπεκράτουν, οὔτε τὸ καρτερικὸν καὶ ταλαίπωρον ἐν τοῖς πόνοις διὰ πολλῶν ἠσκημένον ἀγώνων ἐπεκράτει·
And, as I said before, their manner of fighting was very similar, and neither the skill and experience of the Romans in battle, by using which they generally prevailed, nor their endurance and patience under hardships, trained through many contests, prevailed.
τὰ γὰρ αὐτὰ καὶ περὶ τοὺς πολεμίους ἦν, ἐξ οὗ Μάρκιον ἡγεμόνα Ῥωμαίων οὐ τὸν ἀφανέστατον στρατηλάτην ἔσχον· ἀλλʼ ἀντεῖχον ἑκάτεροι τῆς χώρας, ἐν ᾗ τὸ πρῶτον ἔστησαν οὐχ ὑφιέμενοι.
For the same qualities belonged also to the enemy, ever since they had had Marcius as leader, a Roman who was by no means the most obscure general; but both sides held their ground, not giving way from the place where they had first stood.
§8.84.3ἔπειτα κατὰ μικρὸν οἱ Οὐολοῦσκοι ὑπεχώρουν ἐν κόσμῳ τε καὶ τάξει δεχόμενοι τοὺς Ῥωμαίους.
Then the Volscians gradually retreated in good order and discipline, receiving the onset of the Romans.
στρατήγημα δὲ τοῦτʼ ἦν, ἵνα διασπάσωσί τʼ αὐτῶν τὰς τάξεις καὶ ἐξ ὑπερδεξιοῦ γένωνται χωρίου.
But this was a stratagem, in order that they might break the ranks of the Romans and get the advantage of higher ground.
