And when it was already about dawn, the women, bringing the children, came to the house with torches, and taking Veturia with them, led the way to the gates.
The consuls, having prepared mule-teams, carriages, and as many other litters as possible, escorted them a long distance as they rode.
And many of the senate and of the other citizens accompanied them, making their departure more illustrious with prayers, praises, and supplications.
When the women, while still far off, became clearly visible to those in the camp, Marcius sent some of the horsemen, commanding them to learn who the approaching crowd from the city was, and for what purpose they had come.
And when he learned from them that Roman women were coming, bringing children, and that his mother, his wife, and his children were leading them, he first of all wondered at the boldness of the women, that they had the resolution to come into an enemy's camp without a guard of men, bringing their children, taking no more thought of the modesty appropriate to free and prudent women, so as not to be seen among unfamiliar men, nor conceiving any fear of the dangers which they were about to run, if, to those who chose utility before justice, it should seem a gain and advantage to make them prisoners.
And when they were near, he resolved to go out of the camp with a few men to meet his mother, commanding his attendants to lay aside the axes which it was customary to precede the generals, and to lower the rods when he should come near his mother.
And this is the custom for Romans to do, when those holding lesser offices meet those with greater offices, as is done even down to our own time; keeping indeed this very custom then, Marcius, as being about to meet a greater authority, laid aside all the insignia of his own office.
Such was the respect and consideration he had for piety towards his family.
